I just finished season 1 part 2 and it was just a masterpiece (for me). Then I was just at reddit searching for news about second season and then came across a post and the hate on 86 in comments was unbearable. People were just hating it , comparing it to AOT. It gives a bit of a vibe of Aot but still both are completely different. It made me question if I was the only one who liked it that much. What are can be the major reason for that hate or are they just just toxic ?

Tbh, I don't use reddit but if This isn't a good show then, people don't know what's a good really look like, Comparing it to AOT is just unreasonable Because animes may resemble each other but each have their own lesson in the plate.Btw im currently watching it's second part.

First off, like everyone else said, that's just Reddit.

It's like the rule with positive versus negative comments in a restaurant. 100 people go there, and 70 love it, but 10 hate it, while the remaining 20 are neutral. you might get 5 compliments and 8 complaints in this scenario. This means that about 7% of those who like it speak up, and about 80% who hate it speak up. Reddit is that 80%, and they will latch onto anything they can hate while virtue signaling on some AITA post.

At concerts and comedy shows there are thousands who loved it, but one douchebag who didn't like one individual part will go online and try to rally a bunch of other people who weren't there and have no clue to their cause.

But overall, idiots with a common hatred speak loud and spew their garbage anywhere they can. Go to any post/thread/commentary of an anime, movie, TV show, etc. and you'll find people who went there solely to say they didn't like it with no real explanation. If social media and the internet have done anything, they have given morons with shit opinions a place to feel like they matter.

For having read most of the series (Just got 13th volume delivered this week so haven't read it yet) and having enjoyed the anime I truly don't understand what in AoT they are willing to compare 86 to.

AOT was at first a survival horror and became a story about radicalization while 86 is a military SF about abused child soldiers redeeming their pride on a battlefield of certain death for first part and confronted to regrets and duty for second part.

The only thing I see in common would be the Gran Mur

MAL also has the same issue when it comes to battle-shounens. I stay away from battle-shounen forums nowadays.

As you mentioned, I don’t understand why AOT fanboys like to compare XXXX to AOT. I don’t really compare fictions unless there are a lot of similarities. Comparing AOT with 86 is ridiculous due to how different both fictions are.

The only fiction I believe that can be compared with AOT is Muv-Luv Alternative due to the amount of similarities.
Not surprising considering AOT creator is a Muv-Luv fanboy.

For 86, the closest comparison I can think of is Macross? I don’t know. XD

Shin and Lena development in the light novels reminds me of the characters in Macross.

I am an AOT fanboy, but i never compare any anime with it.
Maybe sometimes the messages transmitted, I can "compare" AOT to others, and even then it is often to say that I like a work.
For 86 I would say the messages about oppression, war and the unknown of the outside world (I have only seen the anime), but this is in no way to denigrate 86, quite the contrary.

Well, This anime was popular after all so it tends to have some haters, I saw some on MAL before but I don't think that many people hate it.

Just like others pointed out, first mistake you made is visiting Reddit and expecting a coherent take. It's filled with "all media is political" and "media literate" crowd, who are guided by motivated reasoning and are actually projecting their own biases rather than objectively analysing the media.

Frederica is actually a major and interesting character when you read the LN but in the anime they didn't cover her story aside from her knight so what remains is really the arrogant little goblin.

Yeah I agree, she is a very interesting character, but the anime didn't really explained anything about her so I don't understand her story or her powers, and her personality is also great in my opinion

Well her power is really huge spoil so I ain't saying it here but at a certain point most of the political turmoil will be because of her so definitely a character to follow for anyone willing to understand what the author is trying to say with the story.

Despite the fact that most people would agree with you (cause people really liked the Show and there is actually not much hate, generally speaking)
I think it's pretty overrated, in terms of writing, characters or even how it looks or feels^^

You mentioned the comparison to AoT, which is exactly what I mean when I use the standart term of "overrated"

AoT CHANGED the Anime landscape forever, spanning over decades, creating Characters even my grandmother knows about.
86, in comparison with that, is just a cute, bittersweet Short-Story, with way less effort put into.

I think that is were people CAN get toxic ^^
The fact that we just lump an industry legend together with the new hot thing, that was popular for a moment there

It's like if some new actor pops up and does his first, small movie and we go: "Oh yeah, he's just as good as DiCaprio, if not better"
People actually compared it with AoT and meant it, back when it aired xD

I've watched both animes and the vibes each of them gave were completely different. Aside from children being the major cast, I don't see any similarities either.

I loved AOT, but it didn't feel the same after the death of Ervin and even at times, Sasha. And let's not forget how Erin chooses to do things as well when he teams up with his brother and the ending....Yes Armin was great, and he really grew as a character and in his strategic knowhow, but he still was no Ervin. (my opinion)

86 was a masterpiece. It was gripping from the very beginning and held true til the end of Part 2, for me. I loved watching the characters, though I will say that most of the deaths in the beginning lost impact because we never really got to know the characters, so we were left with watching how the other characters responded to those losses. Also, there could have been more with Frederika. They didn't give much any insight into her powers aside from her familial relations. I really hope they'll make a 2nd season. This anime deserves it.

As for Reddit, I don't use that platform, so I couldn't attest to whether people are usually negative on there or not. But I can say that I personally would question what anyone who didn't like 86 was hoping to see in the anime? I felt it was pretty true to itself, its characters and its universe. I've seen a couple hundred anime and it's not often anymore that a new anime grips me like 86 did. Nowadays, the anime that's released is either trash, mediocre, or a gem. I've grown tired of the overused tropes. Especially in romance anime, but I still check out new anime.

I think the main criticisms I see with the series are that its plot structure is very simple and often derrivative of other series that have existed before it and can sometimes be predictable because of that. A lot of the 86' feel like generic throw in characters used to garner empathy and less about being fleshed out. Lastly some people do not like its portrayal of racism and prejudice and considers it to be portrayed in a way without nuance people expect. I agree with the first two takes but the third is just nonsense, you could argue that in P1 showing it from the perspective of an oppressor is genius and also shows that even Vladilena did not understand how institutionalized racism was into their military with things such as the call signs being replacements for the 86' real names.

Personally while I think you can criticize this series and I think the AOT comparison is somewhat fair. I also think something like AOT often gets passes for making some of the exact same mistakes as a story, and that generally fans are bias. Imagine AOT was your favorite anime and people told you there was another series like it that was better? Of course people are not going to be able to absorb 86 without being too harsh.

I don't know anything about the community and watched this out of a friend's suggestion, but I thought the first season was decent but second season was a little less interesting to me. It was fine overall just found myself less intrigued than the first season.
