I'm fascinated by cosmic/space horror. I personally don't know any space horror/alien horror anime. I'm looking for anime that have a similar tone to Life (2017), The Thing (1982), and the Alien franchise. If you know any please drop the recommendations

Edit: Mangas are welcome too

Knights of Sidonia seems in that area.

Blue Gender. The setting doesn't move to space itself until around halfway through, but it nevertheless contains both spacial and horror themes.

I also recommend Terra Formars.

Mahou Shoujo Shoumou Sensen - DeadΩAegis

Actually, very well done. Check these reviews #1, #2 to see if it would suit your tastes. Though the novel portrays humans as way worse and scarier than any alien, if that's not something you'd want.

Not familiar with movies mentioned, so I'll give examples of something which resembles as horror and is in space:
Hell Target, Terra Formas [Haven't seen yet, tho it should be a horror title], Blue Gender [same as with Terra], Lily C.A.T.,

These are all titles I know/am familiar with which theme is space with horror in it.

You'll probably get more mileage with manga recs. Blue Gender and Magnetic Rose are probably some of the closer ones in anime.

Not great, but it's what you're asking for, since it's basically an anime version of Alien:

Here are some other titles that might fit but may not be as explicitly horror as you're looking for:

This is more thriller than horror but has an eerie atmosphere and a surreal touch to the extraterrestrial aspect:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2998/Hi_no_Tori__Uchuu-hen

Not overly horrorish but has some horror-oriented imagery and body horror elements and aliens:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2482/Good_Morning_Althea

Involves extraterrestrials with a paranoid noir plot on Mars (reminds me SLIGHTLY of The Thing with one of its plot points, but it's not using that kind of horror imagery). Not horror but has a similar mood.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2622/Big_Wars__Kami_Utsu_Akaki_Kouya_ni

Sort of Lovecraftian and horror imagery:

+1 for Magnetic Rose, probably the closest thing you are looking for.

There is the current airing Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction. But i wouldn't tag as horror (yet?) there are a lot of mystery and drama for sure.

Sidonia no Kishi is also good.

And of course Parasyte - The Maxim

Astro Baby is a newer manga with an extraterrestrial horror element that really fits what you're looking for imo. The first few chapters are available for free on the Mangaplus website.

Terra Formars, even though I'm largely not a fan and have many criticisms of it, it being one of my lowest-rated anime series, is still the anime which most gave me that feel of a proper Sci-Fi horror adventure in space akin to a video game or 1980s film. So there's that. Whatever its faults, the premise is epic and thrilling, and the kind anyone who is a space horror, military science fiction, etc. type appreciator will at least enjoy some aspect of.

Nothing to do with space navigation or other planets
but I recommend the absurdly overlooked Urasekai Picnic from 2021 for a sort of alternative take to Lovecraft's on cosmic horror which I've never seen done anywhere else in anime.

the Alien franchise

For those who aren't aware, a fan managed to craft a 19 minute anime short film based on Alien:

And yes, this is from the same guy who made that fantastic 7 minute TIE Fighter short film, the same one that IMO is far better than most of the Star Wars: Visions episodes.
