Best animated movie of 2024. Glad we had the world premiere at Fantasia. We are in the same quality as the 2007 series with even more beautiful animation. The ending has some great action sequences.

I had the opportunity to be at the world premiere of the movie and I absolutely loved it! This was such a gorgeous and colorful anime, with immense creativity and originality (though the camera movement was going a bit crazy at times, lol).

Kame is such a sweet girl, she was probably my favorite character, excluding the Medicine Seller, who is just incredibly cool. Also, the fight against the Karakasa was absolutely amazing. The combination of the incredibly hype music and the beautiful visuals really made this my highlight of the movie.

Although some parts of the movie did confuse me, it was an amazing watch through and through. It was simply an incredibly fun and amazing anime.

I may be wrong, but I'm certain I heard Lotus Juice in the opening and during the fight. Even if it wasn't Lotus Juice, hearing who may have been him absolutely hyped me up for the movie.

@Phloup Without a doubt yep (just sad the op wasn't longer though)! Sounded similar and the composer is Taku Iwasaki who worked with him on Soul Eater and Shin Kamen Rider.

For you guys who are lucky enough to watch it in theaters, how is the new movie? Is it a completely new tale and does it compare to the original?

@TheRealRouges same concept, It's the same quality of the TV series with a better budget. In terms of quality, in my opinion it is the best animated movie we will have this year.

I finally caught the movie yesterday, was one of the movies I was most excited for. The audio and visuals for this movie are breathtaking, many many levels above the classic Mononoke. The new design for the medicine seller is also much better than the old one, which is rather stiff, now that we can compare them.
I must say though, I was rather disappointed in the story itself. I thought it was the weakest of all the Mononoke entries thus far. The characters weren't very compelling, there wasn't much of a backstory, the mononoke itself was also not well developed... I think the writing staff needed more time to cook up something. Mononoke in the past had been rather tightly written. Nevertheless it's well worth watching.

Caught the movie at a theatre on the way to work. It’s been out for a couple of weeks here and the number of screenings (in Yamagata city) is getting cut back today (Friday).

This movie is visually overwhelming and I spent a lot of energy looking for little details (and clues) as scenes went rushing by. The story is relatively straightforward though I had forgotten what the raison d’être of the ayakashi was by the time the end credits rolled. The VAs are well known enough such that my casual anime watcher friends and coworkers spotted favourites in amongst the cast.

Likewise the sound of the movie is impressive. You can’t help but notice how much it adds to the drama and tension of the stunning visuals.

All in all, this is a movie I’m glad I hadn’t forgotten to go see.

It’s been years since I’ve watched a movie so meticulously curated, one that left me amazed at every moment. Everything about it was perfect—from the voice acting to the psychological depth of the characters, from the camera work to the aesthetic choices, the direction, and the music (Taku Iwasaki was the composer—like, HELLO?). You name it.

You can expect the same exceptional experience delivered in the original TV show, but now in movie format, with 2024 techniques and a solid story filled with intriguing developments and breathtaking visuals.

I’m still blown away by the backgrounds. It felt like floating in a museum. Every moment of the movie was like being immersed in a damn museum. And don’t even get me started on the hinted queerness—add +100 points for that!

The Kusuriuri voice actor was Hiroshi Kamiya (Araragi from Monogatari Series, Levi from Attack on Titan...), and I’m pretty sure they also cast Yuki Kaiji (Eren from Attack on Titan).

For fans of the TV show, you’ll also catch a few references back to it! (At least that’s how I interpreted certain narrative and visual elements.)

If you have any questions, shoot! But seriously, get ready for this movie—it’s going to be worth all the hype.

Last night a friend mentioned she had sort of been dragged to see this movie by her teen daughter (1st year HS) because her daughter really likes Kamiya Hiroshi (also, I believe the movie is rated such that her daughter would’ve had to been accompanied by an adult to see it). Nonetheless, she mentioned how much she enjoyed the artwork of the movie. As for the story, she felt it was a paced such that they covered too much too quickly. One detail she pointed out was something I had missed; to her the pillars in the end credits scene telegraphed that a sequel is in the works. Though I hadn’t noticed that symbolism, I pointed out to her that in fact the movie is the first of a trilogy.

This was such a thrill to watch. The art was fantastic; every scene was so detailed with so much to look at. I especially loved how the rain was animated. The soundtrack and sound design took the film to a whole other level. I still can’t believe after so many years since the TV series that this franchise was revived. The advancements there’ve been in quantity and animation are taken advantage of for this film. What a treat! I do wonder why they changed the medicine seller’s character design though. I’m not complaining; both are awesome. Even the voice actor change did not affect my enjoyment. Kamiya did an amazing job having the same vibe as the original. Definitely will rewatch this and very much looking forward to the next two!

I felt exactly the same as you. I'm disappointed. I went back to re-watch the tv series immediately after watching the movie and it hit even harder how weak this felt in comparison to the original. Maybe the sequel movies will improve on it somehow, but I am no longer excited for them like before.

Once again, technically and visually it is a marvel.
As for its development, it is very simple and I might even add that it is terrible and boring.
It's all a matter of taste, and this movie has many colors, but I didn't like it!

glad to not be the only one here who vastly prefers the original series over this movie... I got a headache halfway through watching due to the overwhelming amount of information on-screen and that didn't to any favors towards my likeability of the movie lmao

I'm not exactly sure how to interpret the ending. I could at least understand that Lady K likely was driven to suicide, but did the guy that jumped into the well discover many such bodies of other women as well, or would those just be metaphorical representation of the rest's "drying up" spiritual death? I thought it the latter, but I'm not sure how to take the dude's reaction then really, like what did he see? Interested in hearing anyone's thoughts

I don't know, I was pretty disappointed in this, it didn't capture what made the original special. I'm also not a fan of the more typical anime character design and using a crumpled paper filter instead of the texturing of the original series felt half assed and was kind of distracting. The later of which I don't see anyone talking about for some reason.

Have any of you people that are raving about the "great visuals" and/or this being "as good or better than the original" gone back and actually watched the original?...

Audiovisually breathtaking production! Seeing the style of the original faithfully reconstructed with modern technology was truly pleasing to the eye.
The voice acting was also great, which elevated some scenes even further.

But I do have some problems, which a few others have pointed out earlier in the thread. The flawed pacing of some cuts being the biggest. This made the narrative unnecessarily hard to follow at times, which resulted in me having to rewind here and there to get the full picture of what was going on. And for a movie that conveys ALOT of information by showing rather than telling, the execution on that front really severed my immersion and ultimately enjoyment.

The pacing of the story also felt a bit odd at times, likely due to some crucial information passing the screen in an instant, which in turn made an otherwise good story feel dislocated and weightless.

I think I understood the plot and the message of the movie despite of these flaws. Still, together these jarring aspects made following the narrative a chore, fracturing the enjoyment which I was expecting to get out of the movie as a fan of the original series.

@ninjawarts The former. The movie does indeed do a subpar job of telling its story in a cohesive manner. Because of the very constant cuts combined with the very vibrant colours, I missed so much upon my first watch of the movie. It took a second watch to pick up on a lot more important details, and watching this video after that helped me even further understand and appreciate the movie: https://youtu.be/P-Z67bz2kZs

I've finally got the opportunity to watch this movie legally today and I can't help but feel a little disappointed. I mean the animation is great and so is the sound but the story seems rather rushed and I couldn't make sense of the time flow. Also the characters where dull and lacked some personality (especially Asa). As many people before me have pointed out there are too many cuts, but I'd also say that even though the bright colours are beautiful I think the series toned down colour scheme helped with readability of the scenes and overall mood. But for me the worse of all is that Kururiuri is barely there! (Yeah, I get that in he's supposed to be more of an observer but it doesn't work if the other characters aren't fleshed out) And on top of that they took away the gold from his Golden God form AND gave it a receding hairline! I laughed when I saw him.
Despite my complaints it was a good watch and I hope that the other movies will be only better!

Abysmal directing style combined with one of the worst scripts I've experienced in a recent anime movie go a long way in offsetting how mesmerizing the setting is.

BUT BUT THE VISUALS ARE BEUTIFUL AND MORE POWERFUL THAN THE ORIGINAL!
Apparently turning the color saturation up to 11 and putting what looks like a software included crumpled paper filter over everything is pure art now...

i like the art design and all but this movie has more cuts than the bohemian rhapsody lol. imagine illustrating a background for this movie for 6 hours and it was only visible for half a second! that sucks also this movie was really just like an acid trip but minority is right the flow of this movie doesn't make any sense.

i recently watched the series and was in LOVE instantly

usually I find movies based off of series don't hit quite as hard for me. Finally had the right space to sit and experience this and WOW

might have enjoyed it even more than the show. Everything is built on so well and there were at least four or five key moments that took my breath away. The art at first was a bit too erratic pacing wise but it developed and I ended up on the edge of my seat for most of it. Soundtrack was stunning, story was solid, yahhh I'm thinking it's a 10

Visually en par with the style and quality of the masterpiece TV show it's based on. The mystery detective story itself, however, is far weaker and confusing, lacks the dark and archaic tone of the original. For fans of the franchise, a pass otherwise. (6/10)

I too, like others who've commented already, was distracted by the art-paper filter. It took a while to realize that they were at least shifting a few presets of the filter around, but even then it made the longer shots, which are usually very painterly and a visual treat, diminish heavily once you can't take your eyes off the same filter pattern that a third of the film's whole shots have.

I went back and skipped around in the OG series' episodes and can confirm that the visuals of the series not only hold up but achieve a great hand-drawn artistic aesthetic that this crummy paper filter could only dream of achieving. It's a shame because the rest of the elements of the film's visuals are stunning as needed to hold up to the original series' caliber.

Establishing the atmosphere of the harem and conveying the tension of the inhabitants as the mononoke slowly psychologically tortures everyone were the two areas where the film performed spectacularly. The execution of the actual mononoke's apparition* and the overall plotline left room for improvement, but perhaps repeated viewings would warm me up to what was going on in the finale.

There are two other films coming, which is great because although this one is sort of a hit-or-miss, we have two more chances for a satisfying plotline and cast of characters, with a guaranteed visual feast.
If it's that paper filter again though, my taste is going to sour...

*a one-eyed umbrella-ghost of a doll's umbrella, discarded when the ex-scribe threw her doll into the sacred well. The umbrella-ghost started disappearing maids by dehydrating them (or were the harem staff throwing dead maids into the well that the umbrella-ghost drained dry? It's ambiguous, but either way, the umbrella-ghost festered for the years that the harem scribe scribed). Eventually, the scribe committed suicide by throwing herself into the well, which made her ghost fuse with the umbrella-ghost - which is a pretty wild franken-monster of a mononoke to handle for a medicine peddler. Although in reality, all that the human-side of this chimera-ghost did was give plenty of clues for the medicine peddler to discern the Truth (it's a human/umbrella-ghost hybrid of the human who created the umbrella-ghost in the first place) and Reason (the current harem scribe had dismissed her maid-friend, which triggered the human-side of the ghost because of her, the ex-scribe's, trauma because that's what she did while alive, which led to her eventual suicide through depression or 'drying up' inside. It didn't want history to repeat, so it kept looking after the maid-friend and sought to punish not only the superiors that threatened her but also the new scribe once she failed to heed the human-side of the mononoke's cryptic warnings.).

i think it was fine, just that, it lacks the charm of the original, first, changing the medicine seller voice actor and design when the first one were already peak, the constant fucking cuts every few seconds only to show the same scene from another angle were infuriating, and how vague kitagawa reason was, at the end? what was the reason for her to become a monoke ?

she dismissed her friend, but this resulted in her death because dismissed women from the ooku are killed? but if that so, how come kame simply leaves?, and even then, why kill them? it feels unnecesarily severe, what was the reason? to hide secrets? but what secreats could low level maid that didnt last a week could hold?, and this fact makes kitagawa sad, she stops performing her duties and she herself is eventually kill?, was that it? but if that was what it take, any prior women dismissed could have become the monoke if all it took was her own death for being unfit.

and the fucking rap bits in the OST, fucking awful, all in all, it was okayish, far from what the original, i give a 6 out of 10
