Do you ever wish the internet would go back 20 years?

Maybe not the internet, perhaps technology as a whole, but do you ever wish we could go back in time?

I mean, sure, I wasn't really around during the 2000s, I only remember the earlier times of Facebook, when YouTube still was all blocky with a 5-star rating system and when Flash games were peak. my memories of the old internet and overall technology from the 2000s is a bit diffuse, and perhaps it's just nostalgia talking, but it all felt cooler back then.

Personally, I often times just wish we could go back to the early and mid 2000s. Websites back then were much shittier, sure, but at least there was a novelty to exploring random sites, and they weren't all copious-looking and made out of the same templates you'll find anywhere. Boards and forums were a nice form of communication, as they didn't feel as fast-paced as modern social media. Finding any videos, music or flash media was fun because there wasn't that much stuff to do, so everything felt fresh. The memes and internet culture back then were a bit more localized, perhaps not as fun or varied, but to this day I still find simplistic ASCII art from back then to be an appealing memory of pre-historic internet humor.

Comparing back then to now, the internet was far easier to digest. Nowadays, I just feel like there's a constant overload of information and media everywhere. You go on Twitter and scroll through 300 tweets about completely different stuff, and it's hard to keep up with that stuff. Now you kinda have to be double-checking videos or photos to make sure they're not made with AI, and you see how the internet kinda makes people increasingly more stupid as time goes by. What's worse is that if you don't really keep up with this kinda stuff, you end up kinda stuck and surrounded by people who seemingly know a hundred thousand things more than you just because they're stuck to their screens consuming information for hours and hours.

Thoughts?

I had dial-up in 2004 (My family was very late to adopt broadband internet), so hell no. Just thinking about the disconnects whenever the home phone rang sends chills up my spine.
Opinions are opinions, and differing opinions can co-exist. 🙂 But I don't do debate, life's too short to spend time debating people.

Honestly, I just want to go back to the times when Vsauce, Filthy Frank, iDubbbz, Ethan from h3h3, Maxmoefoe, etc. were in their prime. Vsauce is still the GOAT, but still...

nah, all that dialup, farmville, mafia wars, facebook, skype was a relic of the past but they were not good experiences. Dialup was shitty, farmvlle/mafiawars was that era's fortnite, youtube and skype were slower and low quality and few channels. It's just nostalgia playing with you.

No way. Everything is way better today.

Sometimes I get nostalgic for the screeching dial up modems... But it was annoying as hell. It would tie up the phone lines. Whenever my Mom tried to make a call I'd get disconnected.

I'd wish my consciousness to go back into younger me Steins;Gate style.

Otherwise I'm happy with my instant HD VR porn. Rather than waiting 5 minutes to see a 640x480 pixel naked girl drawn on my screen line by line...

Not that far back, no. I do, however, miss when Rage Comics were big, and YouTube before the Adpocalypse, though Pewdiepie vs T-Series was the actual point of no return.

It isnt so much technology changed it is that corporations and governments swarmed in and ruined the internet by bending it to their needs over the best interests of users and this was made even worse once individuals out for money and nefarious end goals of recruitment to extremism.

Amusingly I had came across this not that long ago.

Do you guys remember when everyone was anonymous, instead of most people trying to plaster their face everywhere to be a full time influencer? Or how Google actually used to find relevant search results instead of ads?

So of course it was better.

Look, you are either an actual childporn hoarder or you weren't around or have no idea what the "old school" internet was like. The wild west was fun, but for fuck sakes dudes like Shad were a dime a dozen and were no different from dudes in middle school drawing Powerpuff girls or Jetsons porn because he was "being edgy." Shad's artwork is what Newgrounds and "early internet" pumped out

I'm so sick of this "old internet" comment from retards who are just breaking 30, at most.

We get it, "back then we did what we wanted." And that was fun. But back then there were also disgusting, baby fucking freaks who were all "but muh rights." Have the right all you want, face the wall while we plant a bullet in the back of your fuckin skull.

Just recently, a website that I have been using for over a decade has changed it's website design. Up until now, it had been the exact same as it was when I first used it, and was the last remaining example of a website that I used when I was younger that remained the same. So, in a sense, the internet as I see it today is unrecognizable from the one I remember. I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, there were some aspects of the older internet that I miss, while there are a lot of aspects of the current internet I would not do without.

Is the internet really better or worse than it was all those years ago? Who can say, really? It's all opinion. At the end of the day, it's not the internet that we look back fondly on, it's the interactions with people and the memories associated with whatever website, or technology we were using at the time. There's nothing stopping us from seeking those out today, or creating new sites. Things just change. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not.

That got way to philosophical what the hell.

This ground is soiled by those before me and their lies. I dare not look up for on me I feel their eyes

Yeah, that was right when I got "fast", unlimited Internet that wasn't blocking the phone line.

The Internet wasn't commercialized to death, yet, so everything was cool. Most of the people discussing things were at least somewhat tech literate. Search engines still brought you relevant results instead of sponsored content. Youtube didn't sell out to Google yet.

Good times.

I do. I find that technology has made it harder for people to communicate with one another in real life. I kind of miss the days where you'd go to a gathering or party and people stayed in the moment, conversing and joking around. Now I find more people distracted, less engaged in conversation, and checking their phones constantly. It kind of takes you out of the experience. Does that mean you can't have a good time? No, especially if you're among like-minded people who want to be in the moment.

I do agree with the sentiment that the early internet had a sense of novelty and exploration to it. I also found it to be less predatory. Sites today are designed to keep you engaged with them, so it almost feels like you're getting sucked in. Also, as you mentioned, there's a lot of information - so you tend to feel overstimulated.

The internet is not all bad. But it's had a huge impact on our psyches. Sometimes I wish it played a less significant role in our day to day lives.

I might personally wish for Internet culture to revert back by 20 years, but technologically speaking I am quite pleased with things being how they are today and look forward to what the future holds in terms of additional conveniences, as I would say the Internet has been on the continuous improvement plan for awhile now and it has come a long way. The only aspect that has changed, perhaps for more volatility, are the people who have become absorbed by it and are now deeply ingrained in some part of its all-encompassing culture.

@traed I do not disagree; the innovations made over the years have afforded something close to universal societal accessibility to the Internet, and so my point was to say that though I enjoyed the somewhat previously exclusive, private era of the Internet, I would not trade these innovations for 20 years ago.

Well not just accessibility but using operant conditioning using algorithms and ranking systems in such a way it caused polarization of views. There has been some good tech improvements and some bad ones like ones that make it easier for companies, governments and cybercriminals to gather data on you.
