We are talking about Toei, Bandai Namco, and the Dragon Ball Room (Shueisha)... At best, they'll take a few months break, and then continue milking the franchise. For the last decade, Toriyama mostly just did some "supervising", anyway, so i really don't see them stopping.

Lol no. If anything, they will milk the franchise more since now everyone is reminded about the existence of Dragon Ball.

It will need a slowdown due to recent events, but I don't see it disappearing.

No, but the Dragon Ball Daima anime that was supposed to come out in Fall 2024 will be pushed back into next year until the figure out what to do with the series going forward. The same rule applies to the Dragon Ball Super movies that were in production. Toei is going to milk the Dragon Ball franchise even harder since it will be more valuable to them due to Toriyama's passing.

It's gonna be like with Yu-Gi-Oh when Takahashi died. The merch still sells gangbangers even though the manga is turning 40 this year.
Toei doesn't abandon their cashcows that easily.

@BigBoyAdvance No one ever needed to be reminded in any way about its existence, though. Dragon Ball is as strong as always. It's mainstream and well-known enough to not need any sort of things like this. Manga, anime, merchandise, video games... It's a huge franchise. This sad news is already discussed and will be discussed, even by and among people who aren't really into Dragon Ball (or never were), because the literal legend has passed away. However, I don't see it causing a significant boost of this franchise's popularity (even if there may be a small one, I ain't sayin' there won't be any). Why? Because it's already popular and lucrative enough.

Dragon Ball franchise is huge enough to have new stuff released, even if its brilliant original author is no more among the living. No worries. Sure, it won't be the same. Toriyama's style and dedication were, are and will be unparalleled. But I wouldn't worry about the lack of new content. Perhaps Dragon Ball Super manga will have to end prematurely on that one specifc moment, where the original Dragon Ball manga ended, but other than that? I can't see a noticeable "slowing down" with it, at least not in the next couple of years.

Seeing Dragon Ball continue without Toriyama being alive is going to be so weird. I know he hasen't really been "part" of the series for a while even before his death but continuing a series post the creators death is always weird.

Like Dune when Frank Herberts son took over the series.

@deg
But now not even those outlines will be written by Toriyama.

Unfortunately, it's more likely for BandNam and Shueisha to milk the franchise even more than they already have without the oversight of Toriyama. There's no way to know this without them moving forward with more projects publicly, but almost everything coming after the original series has been farcical in comparison. I don't imagine that's going to change without someone with a thorough vision taking the reins.

I'm worried about the path dragon ball will take without toriyama.

If Super is anything to go by with only toriyama supervision, I can't imagine how would it be without him.

Dragonball is a huge franchise in mostly all forms of merchandise. Toriyama passing away will not halt that chain though it is sad news. Looking forward to db sparkling zero.

@Grecefar
I also worry, because I liked Toriyama's supervision over Super and I wanted to see him continue.

I hope it slows down a bit, but not too much. More a quality over quantity approach to make sure each thing is something that honors Toriyama's creations

I wouldn't be surprised. Bob Kane died (Bill Finger as well), but Batman still lives on.

The same will happen to Dragon Ball. Yes, more Brolly movies or alternative universe stuff will be made so Dragon Ball will live on.

Did the death of Jerry Siegel make Superman lose his worth? No!

Stuff like this happens all the time.

Even if Toei were to be defunct, other anime studios will continue to adapt Dragon Ball.

In general, old action figures can never lose their worth no matter what. Even if newer toy designers are incompetent.

All we can do is stay tuned for the future like it's another episode and see what happens.

I can imagine Daima will definitely. Since Toriyama was involved as far as I remember.
