Sometimes anime have a few episodes that last longer than the usual 24 minutes, and these episodes are highly rated by fans. I can name a few off the top of my head: Made in Abyss (both S1&2) finale episode, and recently Demon Slayer and Oshi no Ko first episode.
So I have been wondering if these special longer episodes are a new thing, cuz as far as I remember this trend is has only dated a few years back, and can you guys name some more series with 1 unusually long episode.

Katanagatari has really long episodes.

ReZero first episode is like 1 hour and the second season has multiple episodes that are half an hour long without OP and ED.

Detective Conan has a number of 1-hour and 2-hours specials. If I'm not mistaken, Detective is already dead has double length first episode

The first episode of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is 50 minutes long, like the hour long specials already named here.

Key the Metal Idol had 13 normal length ova episodes, and then the last two were movie length.

Also, somebody mentioned Katanagatari, I think it's worth mention that that series was somewhat particular in its production and release. Every episode is around 50 minutes long, and it was released monthly.

Re:Zero had an hour long first episode. Darwin's Game had a 40-something minute first episode too, as well as a final episode that lasted just as long if I remember correctly.

Bubblegum Crisis has episodes that range from 20 minutes to almost an hour lol.

Heaven's Memo Pad had a double-length 1st episode.

Chaos;Head had episodes between 27-28 minutes long, definitely above average for a TV anime.

I wouldn't count OVAs like Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar or Bubblegum Crisis in this listing, since OVAs aren't limited to TV broadcast slots and are expected to have longer/varying episode length.

Figure 17: Tsubasa & Hikaru aired in the same format, back in 2001.

Everything that connects to MAL

Contains Ecchi, but not Tagged Ecchi: Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3

while i had only watched 4 episodes of figure 17 and left it in my 'watching' limbo for the rest of eternity, i'm surprised to hear that it was aired monthly. is there a reason for this format of longer episodes being released monthly instead of weekly, lasting a longer airing window?

The prologue for Fate/Zero and Unlimited Blade Works were I think twenty minutes longer than the standard episodes in those shows.

Right. I should watch that. I want to but the runtime is a bit of a turn off.

It's not new, and most of the time these episodes don't need to last for an hour.

Kimetsu no Yaiba has had two episodes so far, but the duration of three episodes. However, the content presented in these three episodes could be told in 10 minutes without significant losses in the narrative.

Please, Japan, stop doing this.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

There was one this season where the first episode was so long I though it was a film, about 1h25m IIRC.
