Idk if someone has made this thread before but I just had a thought. It’s pretty obvious by now that anime is getting really popular, especially because demon slayer had broken box office records and stuff. How popular do you see anime getting in the next 10 years or so, will it get normalized like regular tv shows and movies?

Has anime not become mainstream yet? The popularity in the west is insane, compared to when I watched it 15 years ago. While the most popular is battle shounen, the popularity of anime has made other genres and demographics more available to talk about too.

I'd even argue that there are anime as popular as the likes of SpongeBob and (a little under) Mickey Mouse in the US. Hell, I'll even argue that anime is becoming more popular than western cartoons in the US. Of course, you cannot expect all anime to be popular and in the mainstream, the same way you can't expect every cartoon to.

In my country everyone knows what anime is and most of them have already watched at least one series. I consider this is a peak popularity.

Anime is already super mainstream in the US. Manga could still get more popular though.

So mainstream that the popular example for a time loop will shift from groundhog day to re zero.

I just want anime to be popular enough to self sustain the industry, but don't want it to be so popular it becomes mainstream...

btw 2m people watching the premier of Revengers episode 13 here in my country and another 3m followed within a day ... so too late I guess

What would make "something" considered mainstream? I live in the west and you CERTAINLY do not mention anime when talking to your coworkers or in the professional field unless you know they are a fan too.

Most of the time, it is the "mainstream" t.v. shows or sports that get discussed in the office where I used to work. I did overhear some of the workers behind me talking about the Walking Dead, and that certainly was a very popular T.V. show at the time.

Anime is not a topic I would use in general conversations, so I am unsure if it is considered it mainstream.

Anime is mainstream as something for leisure/etc just like TV shows/soap operas, it doesn't feel as cult-ish/niche of a thing anymore, but it's still heavily stereotyped and generalized, which makes it look like some sort of niche

It depends on which country you are referring too. anime became somewhat mainstream in america in like 2000's thanks to toonami and adult swim. Cowboy bebop, dbz, inyuyasha, rurouni kenshin. so my personal answer is 20 years ago.

Anime got a sudden boom of popularity thanks to the Pandemic even if it sucks and looking at how Netflix is also producing its own anime. Anime has become more mainstream than ever before and it will gradually get more and more popular.

I wish it just get popular enough so that I can experience the Anime Movies in my country.

Hey Now! Some of us "boomers" watch anime too.

Back to the topic..
I think anime will increase in popularity and become more than just on the fringes of mainstream.
Do I want to it to become "full mainstream"? No.
I fear that if it became that popular/mainstream, we would lose the essence of what makes anime so good due to too much Western influence.
If it gets too big & popular here, the (U.S.) Government will want in on the action too, and like everything else the Government dips it's greedy paws into, it'll be ruined.

You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Well, anime has been airing on TV for many decades now in America. Obviously, there will always be an audience for it, but I don't think anime will ever become commonplace around the world. It's too much of a niche medium for a specific group of people who love the look and feel of it. Sure it's pretty big now, but I can't see anime becoming anymore mainstream than it already is. It's going to hit a glass ceiling very soon. And even if new people become fans of anime, they won't be around for too long; anime is too monotonous for the everyday fan, they're going to get sick of it sooner or later and quit all together.

I completely forgot to mention pokemon and yugioh which I was trading cards of like 18 years ago(at school and at a local store) in a small rural town in america of 2000 people. So I'm pretty sure it's been popular for a long time.

I truly think that anime has already become mainstream here in the US. I remember back in high school, only 3 people watched it. Now everyone has seen My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer, and has a crush on Levi.

I have to agree with everyone saying it's already popular, but almost only in younger generations. Once we grow up to be 40-50 and have raised kids, it will become truly mainstream like sports, for example, is nowadays.
