A Ghibli film, a Watanabe Shinichiro work, and something like Monster or Death Note.

Akame Ga Kill is one example for me. One of my friends thought anime was childish and he actually genuinely changed his mind when he saw AGK episode 1.

As for what to recommend, show them something super dark and fucked up. Most of the time it's because they think it's for children or they can't get into the animation (even though they loooooove Disney movies)

I see, because works like Ghibli films or Urasawa's works are aimed at a broader audience rather than "weebs."

From the first episode, your friend thought Akame ga Kill wasn't childish? lol, because that first episode had a quick childish tone whiplash (from sad to funny) by the end of the episode.

But doesn't Gintama's comedy rely heavily on referencing other famous manga and anime shows? I'm sure some people who generally dislike anime wouldn't get most of its jokes because they watch less anime than the average weeb.

Probably something on the lines of Cowboy Bebop, The Great Pretender, Violet Evergarden or something by Ghibli.

Since they "hate" anime, I wouldn't recommend a show that is too battle shoneny (like My Hero, Demon Slayer or AoT) or something moe (like K-On or Yuru Camp), but rather something with has a great sub/dub, something that isn't exactly "Japanese" and would be popular enough to talk about and not feel like they are a weeb.

I have a friend that likes comedy variety shows, then I recommend Gintama to him as his first Anime, He really enjoyed it though...
Anyways, it's up to a person whether he/she likes the anime that I recommend or not, all I can do is recommend.

you don't need to watch a lot of shows o enjoys gintamas comedy. that's why its called goatama.
besides, there's notes on top that describe the joke

Notes stating "this is a reference of X show" do not sustain the homour when the viewer hasn't even seen that X show. Gintama is intended for cultured viewers and is not suitable for newcomers who haven't seen enough classics.

Boku no Pico to seal the fate of hatred. Make sure they understand that it is a typical anime nothing out of the ordinary. We have enough haters around here do we really need more.

If you want to bring them to the anime lover side then I would start with something like Ghibli movies, stay away from shounen shit and anything too cute, also avoid typical anime romances they can be tedious.

I usually start with movies since they are shorter. Death note is great but 35+ episodes is a lot to commit to a series for a new person. Stick to shorter series with good endings and stories.

I'm sure Boku no Pico's notoriety as an infamous meme is what turned some people into anime haters who believe anime is only for perverts and paedophiles.

I'm sure they'll listen to you if you recommend anime as a "cartoon" with western-style art.

Monster
Code Geass
Death Note
AoT

FMAB is also a great show to start hooking with anime, but I always recommend watching FMA 2003 first if you haven't seen FMAB yet. But for people who hates anime, I don't think they would enjoy both...

I wouldn't recommend any anime to someone who already hates it. That's how you annoy people. That said, if such a person asked for a recommendation, I'd have to consider their age and preferences (also, which anime do they hate and why?) to suggest something that might be enjoyable for them. Could be anything from a Ghibli film to Texhnolyze or Little Witch Academia depending on who it may be.

Unless that persons hates animated content in general it's pretty much guaranteed their hate of anime is based of stereotypes or just a few experiences. You always consider what someone enjoys in other media when introducing them to anime rather than just going for a few popular "normie" shows and films. Ultimately though again depends on the willingness to try if they are just openly antagonistic to the medium no point in pressuring them.

Vinland Saga I guess , when I was first watching it as a newbie I think it has horny fanbase, classic moe kawaii trope, naruto-esque characters
but actually it isn't .I'd recommend it to older people . For a teenager I would recommend Fate/Zero

No anime. What's the point of forcing someone into something when he hates it? Especially if you want to show him something that is different (normie friendly/aimed to westerners) than general anime.

I'm just talking in general. A girl torturing travelers and letting them die slowly is not something that is geared towards children.

Yeah, most anime haters dislike anime because of a few anime stereotypes that lead them to generalise certain mediums and genres; for example, slice of life anime have no story, mecha is an excuse for plotarmour, ecchi are soft borderline porn, sport anime are slow-paced and dull, hentai is about rape and tentacles.
Moruna said:
Nothing. Why would you want them to do things they hate?
No matter how amazing the show is, they will despise it just because it's the anime show.
Leave them live their life without anime.
Instead if you are the more open-minded one, do things with them which they like to do.
It will be more fun for both of you.

That is a reasonable response, but some people dislike anime for the "wrong reasons," which include anime stereotypes, common art styles, common target audiences, or judging the anime medium based on its mainstream titles.
Which brings us to the point of this thread: some anime lack the aforementioned reasons, and thus may appeal to people who despise anime but have never tried titles appropriate for them.

I guess then they confuse the word "Childish" with "not R Rated or above" or "aimed for children".

Something that isn't long and doesn't have much childish stuff since most of the people who hate anime think only kids watch it. Also stay away from fan service.
So the usual classic, Death Note would be a good start, and if they think the animation sucks then Jujutsu Kaisen.
