Episode 30 starts the "Missing Children" arc. This arc is when the show starts to get good.

「 This arc is where by the end of it there is a significant spike in quality of lore, character development, and the most significant one in animation. Thus if you are someone who may not have enjoyed the first 30 episodes of the show this arc is where the first large shift is made that could change your opinion on it.」

If by the end of the arc around Episode 40 you still do not enjoy the show then I'd say it's fine to drop.

「 At this point you would have at least seen the first big evidence of the shows improvement compared to when you may have dropped it originally」

I dropped this show after 10 episodes originally like most at the start but decided to pick it back up now that the season is ending. I kept hearing the show gets better later on and I finally found that spot. It's not amazing at this point mind you but its entertaining and interesting enough for me to move my rating up from a dropped 6 to a solid 7. Will update after the season ends to let you know if it's worth the 170 episodes.

P.S.

Pro Tip #1:
Watch the first 25 episodes at 1.12x or 1.25x increased speed so none of the slow scenes drag on too much. (This is a common trick by animators to artificially increase watch time, which this show is guilty of since the animation drops in quality at first before picking back up significantly later on)

Pro Tip #2: As with all long running shows skip the filler episodes. (You can find a filler list online) & skip the openings if you don't want spoilers. (idk why shows do this)

*Update: "Witch's Forest" arc around episode 57-65 is the second large spike in quality again, Possible 8/10 rating now.

*Final Update: Final 12 episodes were on steroids. Strong 8/10 rating in the end. Glad a came back to finish it. (Skip the "anime cannon" episodes it's just glorified filler)

Couldn't say it better myself, the seabed arc onwards is where things really pick up there is noticeable drops in the animation buts it not that bad, the main characters get stronger but their personalities doesn't change for the most part so it's get repetitive but that's about it.

I think the show honestly gets good from ep7 and onwards cause the first 7 are setup and worldbuilding.(The anime is honestly a slow burn that becomes something honestly great). This is because not to spoil anything but the shows first arc starts like coming together from there. They start this really interesting mystery that practically runs for the entire anime and is slowly built into a complex web of stories that build into every character which are honestly subversions of the tropes they intially embody. Such as instead having this female character Noelle just be another sakura shes actually strong and useful to the plot when she overcomes her issues in her character arc also unlike most female characters she has a character arc that isnt magically nullified in the next arc of the story. Also the anime handles female characters better than most shounen as they arent walkimg fanservice theyre actual characters like the strongest character is a woman who isnt sexualised at all and is never beaten by a man cause 'plot' like erza from fairytail whos supposed to be an OP member of her guild. The themes also start to be built upon from here and they range from the myth of meritocracy( a system in which your achievements are measured as success or you are rewarded according to your achievements) in a system where your birth determines your value in life, a dash of racism, and the moral vagueness of war and conflict which is a theme i think is handled really well in a simple enough way for everyone to understand it. Because the central conflict covered in the anime are the sort where theres no clear these are good guys and these are bad guys. I honestly think black clover is severely underrated and disregarded because it takes time to establish tropes and to slowly deconstruct them. Also the world building is phenomenal especially once you get to say past episode 10.

More like decent at the beginning, and keeps on getting better and better as the story progresses. Had it at a 7 after the Eye of the Midnight Sun Arc, an 8 after the Reincarnation Arc, and now probably gonna rate it a nice 9 thanks to the Spade Arc when the anime ends.

All I can say is that the show was boring for me until the eye of the midnight sun arc. After that, it gets more and more exciting. Currently I'm at the part where Asta gets his arms healed I'm the witches forest. Hope it gets better from there.
Oh man all I can say is if you already like it at that part, you’re going to LOVE it by the time you get caught up.

Black was good from the very first episode at least for me but in the start it was Just an average anime for me. But things started to pick up in the fight with vetto and line gave me chills by veto “He is..... no beast. He is demon who devours even despair.”. The things started to really pick up from there and the next arc the forest of the witches arc was so cool and not to talk about seeing that demon form first time. Next tournament arc was also great. The things really changed in reincarnation arc the concept of this and it's representation was awesome. And episode 100 and 119 made it one of my most favourite anime. But still something was missing in that and that was animation. And the Spade Kingdom arc solved this problem with a great story. And now even Yami have acknowledged Asta so he is unstoppable and Black Clover also.

Not to talk about the openings and endings, they were great from the very start. But opening 10 adds a charm in it.

Now Black Clover is my 3rd most favourite anime of all time.
Hope it helped you

I don't understand anyone's issues with the beginning of the show. The first 15 episodes are pretty cookie cutter, but when they enter the first dungeon it gets pretty interesting in my opinion.

I’d personally say it starts to get good at episode 18, which is also the very last episode of the dungeon arc which was fairly decent imho

I've watched until episode 50 and I can safely say it's still generic old school shonen until that point. I've read more people say that it gets good after the Water Temple arc which ends at 50. I've also read a lot of people like OP saying they started to enjoy the show during this arc, but there is nothing new or special about it, it's just the best of the worst.

Naruto, One Piece and Bleach all had strong starts, so it doesn't even fair well when compared to other old school shounen. Black Clover is a "watch it if you have time" type of anime.

Yeah, it does get good, but still, is it worth for 170 episodes equivalent time? For me, I would have definitely watched something else instead. But oh well, here we are, and I hate the characters as much as ever.

Hmm, weird. I thought it was for some reason. What manga magazine was it published in anyway?

It's not published in a magazine called MangaONE which I think was made for Mob Psycho 100.

I think there's no definite point of "when does Black Clover get good" because it will
be different and case by case for anyone who watch it assuming they went in blind.
Other's would have been hooked from the start like me despite his annoying voice at
the start, others would find it good after 20, 30, 40 etc.. episodes. But you're right
that the first good/enjoyable arc was around those episodes.

Update on my thoughts: Just did a manga/anime comparison and if you're really interested in getting into this story, please disregard the anime altogether. They not only adapt the manga at slowpoke pace (1-2 chapters per anime episode, which is the absolute lowest you can go), they drag out scenes, add up a bunch of filler scenes, and have characters repeating the exact same one liners / personality quirks over and over and over and over and over while it only happens once in the manga and that's it.

The anime has almost no comedic timing yet keeps making up shit that never happens in the manga (or is 1 panel that gets 20 seconds of animation). The art is worse in the anime and the voice acting is average, you get nothing from watching the anime. You can read the manga in 1/3 of the time without having to endure slow animation and cancerous filler scenes that are only there to get the episode to the 24 minutes mark.

I already knew the anime adapted the manga too slowly, but actually doing the anime-manga comparison made me cringe so hard at whoever is directing this anime.

I thought the dungeon was where it started to get really good but for the most part Every episode is critical to the story line later on. So it might drag for a few episodes but I was always entertained.

I start to watch it after saw op13(Grandeur) on youtube in january. I watched until ep10 and dropped for maybe 5 or 6 weeks and for no reason i decided to give another chance arround the last monday. From last week's monday until friday nigth i made progress from episode 10 to 60 and from saturday morning until now i watched it from 61 to 127 :) It's absurd how much this show improved in the last two arcs. It beggins for me as an 4/10 and now i'm considering put in a 9/10. I think between episode 30-60 the show already hit the mark for a 7/10, but the episode that got me totally invested was the first attack of the Eye of Midnight arround episode 15. There's a lot of good moments and in particular the elf arc hit a spot that only Marineford from One Piece was capable.

i'm not a shounen guy, my target demographic for animes change arround two years ago for seinen and i cant really find pleasure in most of the shounens these past years so i was really surprise when find it one that rekindle this old passion of mine. Black Clover is a powerhouse for the new generation of shounen and i would put it in the same level of importance as chainsaw man or jujutsu kaisen for the development of this "genre".

Btw, i was comparing black clover with one pice today and i think if we consider the same episodes mark black clover has been better than one piece in the first 100 episodes, of course we can only compare the first 100 or 200 episodes of each one, it wouldn't be fair to compare the world building of one piece since it has almost 1000 episodes. This is something huge at least for me.

I'm in episode 127 of Black Clover and for now i would say it's clearly better than DemonSlayer/Naruto(These two are actually so bad) but it's on the same level of jujutsu kaisen(i'm a manga reader of this one);

I thought it was good at episode 1 #EpisodeOneGang

But I agree that by episode 39 it's become very good. And saying that's where it becomes really good is different than saying "just watch the first ~40 episodes of a show because after that it gets better." That would be ridiculous and I hate it when fans of other shows say that. That would be almost 25% of *all* BC episodes from all 4 seasons

That's awesome that BC has brought back that same feeling for you. And I think that's a really intriguing discussion you bring up in regards to OP: Is OP or BC better through 100-200 episodes? And as long as that discussion didn't turn into an AoT vs FMAB war, I'd love to see that question asked on a MAL forum somewhere

It took 90~ episodes to finally get me excited, but then again anime stopped making me excited like it used to 10 or 15 years ago 🥺 I absolutely hate that, so I'm quite at a happy place right now, in a point where I'm really looking forward to the next episode and wanting to know how things will wrap up in the current ark.

I honestly thought it would be a somewhat serious show after watching the first few episodes. I'm on episode 9 now, and this show is so corny and funny, I can't help but watch it??? The animation is trash, but if the quality improves, that's even better.
