You can use any kind of fiction as reference... Or you can use your personal opinion ><... Doesn't matter which one... I just want to have a good clear distinct perspective between them...

I'm not certain.

In Japanese, the word 魔法使い(Mahoutsukai) translates as "magician," "mage" "wizard" and "sorcerer."

Why didn't you add witch smh.

In the world of Majo no Tabitabi, magic is hereditary. People who can use magic is called a "mage". Not everyone can use magic, because it's hereditary... and unlikely for people to learn or possess the affinity to use magic.

And females have a greater affinity than male. Making them placed in the top of hierarchy. There's not really a reasoning to it. Witch simply is the best has greater affinity to magic.

differences are pedantry, the similarities are that none of these are real :P

Witches = Magic doctors
Wizards = Magic researchers
Mages = Magic mad scientists
Sages = Magic vegans
Sorcerers = Magic YouTubers

BTW, whichever idiot decided that 'witch' and 'wizard' were just the two magic genders seriously fucked up and missed so much good potential. Is wasn't J.K. Rowling was it? It sounds like something she'd have done.

A sage is a wise man. Wizard, mage and sorcerer are the same, the reason we have so many words is because english has absorbed many synonyms from different languages. Witch and wizard are germanic, sorcerer is latin through french and mage came directly from latin. The original english word for magic user is witch, from old english wicca (male) and wicce (female). Wizard originaly meant "wise man" and has the same root as "wise"

The question has already been answered, but I will call attention to the difference between a Wizard and a Mage.

A wizard doesn't necessarily cast visible spells. He's a worker of miracles, and does things that flummox the rational mind.

Gandalf makes fireworks like anyone else, but his actually make shapes that would be impossible without reality-bending magic. People don't know how he appears at exactly the right moment, etc. His magic is more invisible.

A mage on the other hand is nothing if not a spellcasting fighter. Gandalf is definitely a mage also, but most of the time he's more of the 'miracle working' type, so you'd know him as a wizard.

I CELEBRATE myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

I agree that the difference is all but up in your head. However, the similarity is also all up in your head. How can you say they aren't real. As long as you are one of them, they cannot be unreal. Heed my words, young one. You ought not to cease believing that magic can be accomplished and that you have the potential for magic.

I'm sure you can do it, young one.

Thank you, Good Sir. :P

I can tell from your username that you must engage in witchcraft or wizardry of some sorts. Unfortunately I'm a good Christian girl and the only magic in my life is jesus. Really though i'm just afraid my potential is far exceeding yours. How could I play my good sir like that after you bade me so well :'(

I'm glad you noticed I'm secretly a witch. Christian girl and jesus can be in your life with magic as long as you tread the fine line carefully. If your potential far exceeds mine, then poor me just have to work harder. I'm sure the sky's the limit for young girls like you. Didn't Jesus of Christianity impart you the origin of the power of the words. I bet he's keeping you for himself so you can't get any better. Sly Jesus, that one. You are being blind to his faith!!!

The differences are totally arbitrary, but I like using the D&D ones.

Wizard: you study for your magic
Mage: general word for spellcasters of all kind
Sorcerer: you have an innate ability or heritage to control magical powers
Witch: evil mage
Sage: a dude who knows a lot but isn't necessarily a spellcaster

Bonus word
Warlock: you made a pact with an otherwordly being to gain magic powers with the small price of selling your soul

Oh wise one

So humble you are

No, Space is the limit, Witch. I will ride my broomstick like a mad man now that I have fraternized with your kind. Oh no he didn't, Jesus must have forgotten, silly man. He only taught me how to tie a sailors knot...... around my chastity. Yes... that's what it is, I'm being caged. Thank you for being my Bright Flash of Light, you've undone years of injustice.

any trainee is a mage.

those who use books an shit become sorceror so single target only, then transcend and become a sage a advanced version.

or just use aoe spells= wizard.

my own magic system:

WITCH - does black magic using herbs, brews potions cauldrons trickery spells. not necessary evil but leans to it. [used for females but can be men too]

Shamans - same as above but not black magic, ie not evil. [men and women]

SAGE - A learned hermetic scholar.

SORCERER - a ritualistic magician, who uses arcane powers thru a long game/ time consuming spells, artifacts, mandalas, the creepy works, think father from fma

WIZARD - basic spell casting magician, usually a combat magic fighter. like the alchimist in fmaa or harry potter. but unlike harry potter can also cast aoe spells. also can use defense and offense.

MAGE - catch all term for any magic user, that either hasnt specialized in either of the above or doesnt fit them. maybe a trainee/ apprentice to any of the above.
think rintaro okabe, with actual superpowers instead of being a chunibyo

I read the lists above and agree with some but not other things, I think:

==These are base on how spells are cast======
Sorcerer- Uses bare hands to cast.
Wizard- User that casts spells with an external channeling device. (wand/staff/artifact)
Enchanter- Casts verbal spells or magical songs, without the need of artifacts or hand movement.
Psychic- Uses its thoughts.

The need of an external mana source may or not be required by any of the casters.
Either the mage doesn't produce mana of its own so has to get it from somewhere else or wants to amplify its output. Some may need to cast or absorb mana on specific magical places.

==These are titles======
Sage- A scholar/wise man that isn't strictly magical.
Mage- To describe any magic-user before knowing if they are evil or how they cast spells.
Witch- Evil mage / Ill intended.
Warlock- Use dark magic.
Magician- Mages that actively use multiple of the different spell castings. (The unclassifiable)

I don't think making potions is specific to any of the above, they just need to know how to do it.

- Wizards/Mages usually Chaotic Good magicians
- Witches more of outcast Alchemists than Magicians
- Sorcerers usually (if not always) are the Evil-based types (such as Necromancers)

Edit: not familiar with Sages maybe they are more common in JRPGs, not sure.

There is virtually no difference between those terms in fantasy. It is all about what people imagine when they hear a certain word. Gandalf and Dumbledore are the most stereotypical wizards I can think of, but they can also be called sorcerers, mages, and even warlocks.

The distinction between warlock/witch and the rest of the terms is important, however. In the occult, being a Warlock or a Witch implies that the person is practicing black magic (the magic that stems from one's own will), while the wizard/sorcerer's source of magic remains unknown.

That being said, the vast majority of magic in fantasy is black magic, so all these characters can accurately be described as witches and warlocks as well. The only instance of white magic I can think of is Qui-Gon Jinn from Star Wars since he listens to the will of the force. Therefore, he can be a wizard, mage, or a sorcerer but not a warlock.

@Soverign Yeah, I can describe Jesus as a sorcerer. A lich, to be more precise.

Don't druids, witches, and warlocks draw their power from nature or some shit. Therefore, the more I hurt nature the more I hurt them.

Mage implies some sort of training or schooling to use some unseen power. Like devotion to a certain deity (blackhole) or school. (destruction)

Sorcerer implies one is born from some sort of lineage. Like your Dad was a dragon or deity in human form. You can just use the magic powers without training. Technically speaking Jesus was a sorcerer.

There many opinions on this topic but the reality is the words and the meanings slightly changed through different languages. The first meanings for the words are not really cool anyway. The awesome thing is that people have crazy imaginations and made there own things up. If you make games, write, do manga or comics, you can do so many awesome things with this stuff. “Great Sage” “The Black Sorcerer” and so many cool titles you can make up. RPG classes. Full of seeds for the imagination, give it a shot.
