Why is the score so low? I am unable to watch it yet. Is there something wrong with the movie?

It's just a recap.

Does that mean it deserves a low score, though? Rating it low implies the original series was flawed in some way...

I don't think so. Recaps are just a way of remembering important scenes of the anime in preparation for a sequel (In that case, the movie). They compress almost everything, so they aren't the real experience you would get from watching the anime.

I actually crunched the numbers in another thread... In the case of "Made in Abyss"... Assuming each movie has a runtime of 2 hours exactly..
There would only be about 20 minutes of cut footage in total. Or 1 minute 30 seconds from each episode.

Especially for someone new to the series, there isn't really much being cut or compressed...

Sure, you're not getting the full 10/10 experience, as you say. But you are getting the 9.5/10 experience. Which is almost as good.

Also there is the issue of people rating the series before they've even seen it. And I can guarantee that virtually no-one who has rated it has actually seen it.

What new content? The sequel movie for the 5th layer arc was announced as soon as season 1 ended. The 6th layer arc is nowhere near done yet. Tsukushi is the one who's stalling, so take it up with him. Tell him you aren't satisfied with three chapters in half a year because you need more content to be adapted into anime.

That might be a valid point if splicing together TV episodes for a theater run to drum up sales and interest took any significant amount of time or effort at all, at least in a way that would affect other projects.

You would then be implying the Original deserves a 10/10, to which I would say many would wholeheartedly disagree with, especially when the episodes adapted in here don't really come close to touching the real meat(y) of the anime series content.

And that will definitely feel butchered in the next movie, with the hour special finale and all.

Recaps almost never as good or better than the original.

I'm using a metaphor-- the 10/10 vs 9.5/10 comparison is to show that yes, a recap is not the "complete" experience, but in this case you can barely tell. It's not an implication of whether Made in Abyss is rated a 10/10 or otherwise.

Now, the Code Geass recap movies on the other hands... (They feel rushed, at least in comparison to the full series)

According to the Fathom Events website for the US screening (https://www.fathomevents.com/events/made-in-abyss) The run time for the film is 2 hours and 15 minutes, so there will barely be anything cut at all. This movie should be more or less like binging the first half of the series.

I just watched it and it was great. I mean it was just all of the first 8 episodes put together with little to nothing taken out at all. There was some new stuff at the very beginning but other than that it was just like marathoning the first half of the show minus the ops and eds. The best improvement was the sound quality because instead of plan stereo they were able to make it surround sound for theater quality.

I watched whole anime alone and then the movie with my friend (who was watching it for the first time).
I noticed and counted 5 scenes cut out and I watching it in episodes rather in one go felt better.
Still I'd like to have "director cut" with all scenes.

Lots of small ones. From what I've noted while watching the first movie:
Reg coming back from 1st layer for the first time,
running away from uncle Hablog,
part of conversation with Mobling,
Hablog's flashbacks about Ozen,
Beginning of the Reg and Riko training

Second movie:
whole sequence in 3rd Layer (this one is big. I get why it got removed, but still big sad),
Mitty and Nanachi talking about book,
Mitty and Riko looking at each other (this one was actually redundant).

Dang now that you mention it i do remember all of those. Those were all quite small but they should've left the 3rd layer I wish. That's sort of a big segment. While it wasn't very crucial to the plot, the allure of the levels and abyss are part of why I watch Made in Abyss.

Yeah, I think it's the only segment in whole anime where Riko isn't depending on Reg. Without it, she is more like a tourist. Sure, it was her fault that she got into trouble, but that scene where she climbs a hill and has hallucinations was amazing.

Because not all people are dumb beyond words and some, like me, don't like to be jerked around. And besides if a score of 8.14 is low, then I dunno what the OP thinks a low score really is.
Me every time I hear the word "reparations": 🤣🤣🤣
