I'm pretty sure most atheists don't believe in a soul which survives after death. We don't need a reward to live I guess. |

Probably no where. I might have a soul. Who knows? |

I feel like heaven? If it exists . . . Think about it, if you get the wrong religion (although I guess you are pretty safe if it turns out one of the abrahamic religions is correct, and you happen to be one of them) then not only did you not believe in the right god either, but you worshiped a false god . . . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Although here is something I have wondered, heaven is supposed to be where all the morally just go right? A great place for the goody two shoes, but what if Hell then is simply a place of debauchery and what not, like one giant frat party? I mean to the morally just and whatnot, it sure would seem like an awful place, where I imagine them having some kind of lawn party w/ sweater vests and all that. But would you want to be in a place that exemplifies everything that is morally right according to the standards of whichever religion is right? Regardless of which religion it is, that means, for example, an eternity without all kinds of good food, no sex, etc. |

I'm not an atheist, but I'm pretty sure 90% of them believe that they return to the nothingness from whence they came. Basically they will return to the same state (or non-state) as they were in before they were born. I think that Schopenhauer describes it pretty accurately in one of his aphorisms. |

...........Purgatory........... That is so uncool . God isn't worried about what we do . If he worries then he isn't supreme . Atheists at best get dissolved in the nothingness , in case they have some desires left at the time of death , then they might have to return . I don't believe in religion so naturally I don't believe in souls either. Atheism isn't just another religion, it's actually the absence of religion. There is no atheist god, no atheist heaven, and no atheist soul. We don't go to atheist church to praise nothingness. Our consciousness is generated by the complexity of our brains and things like dementia and amnesia can take our "soul" away before we even die, but that consciousness wasn't stored anywhere other than our brains so if it leaves it isn't coming back. Once the brain can't function anymore the "soul" also goes away. There would also be the question of "at what point are we assigned a soul?" which doesn't even really make much sense. Would the baby be given a soul sometime during pregnancy? If so, wouldn't it be perfectly fine to have an abortion before the baby is given a soul? If the baby had a soul before pregnancy then that would mean that even having a period would result in the loss of a creature with a soul. If the sperm is what gives the baby its soul that would be even more disturbing. zombie_pegasus said: I believe that the existence of Alzheimer's and amnesia disprove the existence of the afterlife. If people can be stripped of their consciousness before they're even dead then why would people's consciousness move on to a different realm? If someone has amnesia, loses all their memories, then has to develop a new personality would their own self have ascended to heaven? Would people with multiple personality disorder have their personalities separated in heaven or would they still all be in the same person? Would people with Alzheimer's have their soul slowly seep into heaven or would they still have Alzheimer's when they get to heaven? If someone is a gay Christian and they beg Jesus for forgiveness right before they die and are allowed into heaven would they still be gay in heaven? If heaven does exist then why can't why prove its existence? zombie_pegasus said: "The brain is greater than the sum of its parts". It seems like you people like this idea. There are even some middle schools where kids are forced to dissect brains of small animals. When the brain is alive and functional it is more valuable than the atoms that its made of. The same is true for anything that is fully functional. If you have an iPhone and smash it until it stops working it is no longer useful. Once it stops working it is no greater than the sum of its parts. The iPhone doesn't have a soul that goes to another realm, it just stops working. It is no longer an iPhone it is just a piece of scrap metal. Human consciousness is what makes a human more important than a pile of meat. Once the human is dead it is just a pile of meat. I don't get why this is so hard to understand. zombie_pegasus said: There is no afterlife. However, our consciousness is built from the neurons in our brain and changes whenever our neurons change ie. all the time. The information in your brain telling you that your current self is the same person as the you of five years ago would be lost with your life so you cannot consider any arrangement of neurons that leaves that information out to be "you". You are only you because you believe you are you. If you lose your memories in the afterlife then a single conscious entity could constitute there being an afterlife. The human brain is very efficient at storing data and physically it is fairly large. A human brain is around 1.2 litres and there have been around 100 billion humans. The space required to hold this information would be equivalent to 48,000 Olympic sized swimming pools. If there were to be an afterlife, where would all this information be stored? Sure, most people don't fill their entire brain with information, but there's still a lot of information there that must be stored somewhere. The most logical explanation would be for it to be stored in a black hole, but how would it get there in the first place? Hawking radiation also causes some problems with this. This would also mean that the information going there would be travelling at the speed of light so your afterlife wouldn't start instantly as the nearest black hole is several thousand light years away. If the information doesn't change too much over the journey then it may feel as if no time has passed. The version of you in the afterlife wouldn't technically be the same person, but the information is there to tell it that it is you, so it's close enough. Some of the information will likely be lost along the way so you won't be complete and will likely be missing some memories or possibly even personality traits. What happens in this afterlife is indeterminable but in general it's fairly irrelevant. Because of Hawking radiation some key parts of the world will be lost over time so the world will not stay the same. Building too complex of structures in this world could lead to changing information about the people living there depending on how the information is stored. The population size will change and even if the residents don't physically change over time you'll know how long they've been there based on how much information they still have about their original life. Just like with dementia everyone's brains will slowly break down. This is the only possible afterlife I can think of. |

Where I will go? In the never existing state. I am currently still a teenager. I am hoping that science will make something, like transferring your consciousness into a virtual reality that lives forever on or they make something that we live longer/forever or they make a device (or anything else) that let us get reborned. Currently, there is hope. ,,cryonics" is that, what we can currently hope for 100%, atleast for those in the USA. There is another hope. Energy can never go away, so your energy in the brain probably never will go out of existence, but your consciousness will for sure and that is where we are dead, technically. |

1. I don't think souls exist, and if they do, they should exist for every living thing since physiologically we're so similar that it makes no sense to have something so fundamentally different from other living things. I mean, all eukaryotes (multicellular organisms, basically every animal/insect) share the same type of cell from which they're built. 2. Well if I believe in the conservation of mass, our matter is broken down and redistributed in the Earth and the atmosphere. Heck, you shed some of your mass regularly through hair, skin debris, and waste, and replenish it with other animals/plants. I'm not even sure if I believe in an individual, or rather, something more like an ecosystem where lots of smaller things live. Like some human cells have flagella that allow them to propel themselves. I'm just glad it's all working in tandem to allow me to shitpost. |
