It does seem that newer anime these days gets a lot more attention and discussion than stuff from the 80s or earlier. Which is understandable, but I think that at least sometimes part of the reason not a lot of people watch older anime is that no one really talks about it in these forums.

So what are some of your favorite "oldies," particularly from the 80s or earlier?

Me, it's Maison Ikkoku. Simply put, that is the best romantic comedy anime I've -ever- seen (Not nostalgia talking either, as I've only just watched it last year). Every character is charming and entertaining in their own unique way, and how everything dovetails in the last 12 episodes is absolutely brilliant.

Rose of Versailles. Watched it 6 times already, and I'm feeling like watching it again. It makes history alive, it is the prototype for shoujo, has several artistical implications and is the most awesome romance I've ever watched or read.

Ai no Kusabi (shut up and leave me alone, I love it and it's still my favourite OVA ever)

Gundam. The first UC arc, I mean. It has Char.

inb4 Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I'm right before the second moment of important SPOILER. And it's as good as everyone says it is.

I love Nausicaa to bits. I know it's too 'environmental' for some people but that kind of thing doesn't bother me at all.

I'm kind of skeptical of anything by Rumiko Takahashi. Seems like just about everything I've seen from her (while enjoyable) is recycling the same or highly similar character personalities. It's almost to the point where I feel "Seen one Takahashi show, seen them all" applies whether it be Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, or Inuyasha.

As for 80's stuff, Macross/Robotech should get a mention.

Almost every UC i've seen so far. Plus Macross and Votoms. There goes almost all old school I've watched. I just happened to pick old school stuff I might like and ended up actually liking them.

“Old sk00l” tends to be the only stuff I can really enjoy. Space Battleship Yamato & Space Pirate Captain Harlock are both fantastic. At some point I’ll get around to MS Gundam, and I’m currently waiting for the rest of my SDF Macross DVDs to come in. And Bubblegum Crisis and Megazone 23 are two of my favorite OVAs.

Thing is, I love sci-fi & spaceships. There hasn’t been a whole lot of that stuff lately.

It has some of that with the main characters, but in a more realistic and fleshed out bent- Kyoko is more three dimensional than your typical tsundere, and there's a lot of subtle growth in the two leads, moreso than in her other series. Godai's more of a kid in the beginning compared to the end.

And the way it develops and wraps everything up is just amazing.

The only oldschool anime I ever watched was Akira which is an amazing film. I watched a bit of Fist of the North Star (not really sure how old it is) and that wasn't too bad.

Uh isn't the 90's "old School" now? it's been 10 years.

But Maison Ikkoku was easily the most over hyped bullshit I've ever seen. I have no fucking clue why people think Rumiko Takahashi is anybody worth praising. All her major work is long drawn out fluff with shitty characters and childish romance.

I don't remember much from the 80's, just mainly Gundam and maybe like dragon ball and battle of the planets.

But I always wondered about the original Gundam, it was quite literally one of the most popular anime in Japanese history. The Gundam in japan is like superman here. So why hasn't Sunrise gone back and given the anime a face lift? It hasn't aged well at all and is notorious for animation errors. I think we owe Gundam alittle justice.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

I guess for super old school I'd have to go with Macross and it's theatrical counterpart Do You Remember Love. I just thought the story was really neat and clean compared to most of the stuff released today. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy bloody, violent, and ecchi anime as much as the next guy, but it's refreshing to see some fairly innocent stuff every so often.

It's amazing how much better Macross came across for me than Robotech did. It was almost like watching two completely different series.

There's nothing "childish" about the romance in Maison Ikkoku. For such "overhyped bullshit" you sure didn't mind it that much, rating it a 7.

I consider "old school" after some deliberation to be 10 or more years ago. Going off this, Ghost in the Shell (First movie) and Cowboy Bebop are definitely up there. The other older anime that I ahve seen I didn't really like much (see: Akira and Top wo Nerae!).

1. My Neighbour Totoro - I don't care if it's a kids anime (I think it was meant for kids and adults equally), it's a masterpiece
2. Angel's Egg - because I like like weird/artistic anime. It is very slow-paced and has an extremely vague plot. Not for everyone, but the art is brilliant.
3. Only Yesterday - From 1991, but that's probably old-school enough, now that we are in 2010. Some of the best character development in n anime movie.

I need to watch some old-school TV anime staples, like the first Gundam, Rose of Versailles and at least one of Leiji Matsumoto's work..but I can say these are my favourite old-school anime movies so far.

Hmm... I guess I always figured "old school" was +20 years. I mean, in that sense Akira is old school (and even that feels weird to me), but if it only takes 10 years, then NGE, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Lain, Escaflowne, Kare Kano, etc are all "old school". TBH I just don't see enough difference in recent anime to justify calling that stuff old--there's more moe (and in general, more fanservice) than the 90's stuff, but all the same tropes, direction techniques, and concepts are being recycled with very little innovation & variation.

Then again, in less than five years, NGE will be 20 years old, too. Hmm...

Amen to Gundam 0079. Too many Gundam fans nowadays have only seen SEED and 00, possibly Wing.

I'm in the process of watching the original 80s Super Demension Fortress Macross, which's on-hold because of 0079.. but, it was really good from what I'd seen. xD

I agree. SEED and 00 don't even compare to U.C. Gundam. And I doubt most fans could watch it due to it being made in 1979; as a basic generalization of the New Age community.

But still, first Macross series >>>>>>>>>>> Gundam 0079.

And I really must see how bad is that Seed, since UC Gundams weren't, but also weren't one of most interesting things as well.
To me 00 Gundam was far more enjoyable.
