Billions live in poverty and yet only a few thousand own more than anyone will ever earn in several lifetimes. This has been true since the dawn of human civilization - power and wealth has always been largely concentrated amongst only a few percentage of people.

Hence would human civilisation collapse if the 1% didn't own 80% of the world's wealth? Or are there other alternatives but are being suppressed to prevent the balance of power and wealth from tilting towards the people?

Discuss.

No, that's what the tyrants want you to think. The world would be better off if the 1% owned 30% of the wealth or less.

Not at all. Its past success aside, Communism fundamentally works, and that's all you need to know.

Communism has failed spectacularly over the past century. Even china doesn't want to admit communism fails hard, and yet they practice free market capitalism.

The ideals associated with it are utopian for a reason; it is impossible to imagine that it will ever work in modern society. But on paper, it does work fine, and that's all my point is.

Also, whether or not it ultimately fails is somewhat irrelevant to whether or not we could survive without the 1%.

Communism works on paper but it doesn't work when you factor in the "human" element to it. There will always be corruption and greed.

Oh wait nvm, you addressed it yourself. Heh.

No, if you spread the wealth, given some time it would go right back to the 1% configuration.
The simple truth is that despite some of the inequalities, some people will always be better at handling wealth than the majority of others.

1. "This has been true since the dawn of human civilization." Nah, not really. Lots of scholars ( not even mainly Marxists) point out primitive communist societies. So this general nice-sounding statement about "mankind" is wrong because of historical and cultural variety ( some societies weren't even capitalist or feudal up until the 18th, 19th century when they were colonised)
2."Hence would human civilisation collapse if the 1% didn't own 80% of the world's wealth?" Yes, it would and it will be for the better
3. Communism. It's inevitable ( yeah i read the "critics" farther below, it's all bull)

you're welcome

I was reading this universal basic income thing where basically the idea is everyone is given income that would be livable on and what you do to make more or what you do for leisure would be up to you.... sounds nice in theory

Survival of the fittest,as much as dipshits who want to blame some higher power try to convince others as well as themselves, there will always be that top 1% with a vast hold on their surroundings, there is a cream of the crop that knows how to handle their money to the point of overwhelming success while a vast majority can not.

Not really the same thing, though that's what I said in theory in the first place, something like that would work if it wasn't for humanity's greed... for now there will be a top 1% but that doesn't mean we should let the gap increase, we need to do what we can to decrease the gap, though I'm not sure how much could be done :(

Of course not. The world will be better if the wealth is somewhat balance. The alternative is socialism but people keep relating it to communism. Once automation like robots/computerization takes over all human jobs then expect socialism to spread more or else the world economy will collapse for good or there will be riots everywhere started by the majority (the poor) since only the rich can buy those automation technologies anyway.

I find the reverse more true that what you are asking OP. This amounts to asking.

"Would society collapse if My land Baron allowed the peastants to wash shit off of themselves as often as he does?"
