According to Anime!Anime!, director Hosoda Mamoru disclosed at Animation Asia Conference that he accepted an offer of the director of Haruhi Suzumiya movie. But the producers didn't let him direct it in the end.

He also said his next movie has already been under way. The script writer is Okudera Satoko ("Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo", "Summer Wars") and Hosoda wants to assign the character design to Sadamoto Yoshiyuki again.

It's like KyoAni doesn't want good directors to work with their studio.

They like to keep their projects within their cliques. You either work exclusively for KyoAni, or you don't work with them at all.

Yeah, they're a lot more traditional in terms of their corporate structure. Usually in anime production, the talent is independent of the studio. They work under contract on a per project basis, and a contracted director may or may not be closely associated with studio management.

At KyoAni, the directors and animators are permanent employees. Within that kind of culture, employees are usually favored for the big jobs (incentive to stay there instead of breaking off to work freelance), regardless of whether they're the best fit.

Also, people who leave insular companies like that are more or less dead to the organization.

If that was the case they wouldn't have offered him the position in the first place.

Too bad. He's so godawful, he would have definitely ran the franchise into the ground. Oh well, good thing the world is starting to wise up...

It's likely that they had a handful of people they wanted as directors, and somebody higher on their list accepted.

I just don't get these guys. I really don't. They've just been going down the drain.

Perhaps they didn't have him direct it because if he did, the Endless Eight disguised as Disappearance wouldn't be repetitive enough and would be too enjoyable. Because who REALLY expects KyoAni to actually make Disappearance?

And the sad part is, I'm honestly not sure whether I'm being sarcastic or not.

yes, you are being quite sad if you believe that will happen for even a second

Endless Eight was made to piss off people who will continue to watch Haruhi regardless of what internet temper tantrums they have and they get more money with a movie. I personally would have made EE 12 episodes just to watch another month of hilariously pathetic butthurt fanboys cry.

I'm pretty sure they'll actually pull through and make Disappearance, but you never know.

I wonder why...

I mean.. Considering that this movie is to make up for the Endless Eight most likely, I doubt the producers would pick a Digimon director for it. Then again, who will be directing it then?
