According to Yomiuri Newspaper, Kato Kazuhiko, the composer of "Do You Remember Love?" (theme song of Macross: Do You Remember Love?), committed suicide by hanging. He was 62 years old. He left a note in the hotel room.

Update
According to Sponichi news, he left two notes to his friends and the staff. In the notes, he confessed he couldn't come up with new songs anymore due to the mental depression.

He is a very famous singer&songwriter of Japanese folk songs in 70's - 80's but the fact he also wrote anime/game songs is not so well known.

Poor guy. Was it him that hung himself and people thought he was just a decoration for Halloween?

I never heard of any of his works but I'll try some of it, out of respect.

Deleted nonsense quote. Please don't post if you have nothing to contribute to the thread, including just quoting somebody else while adding nothing further.

On-topic, this is a little strange, but I suppose everybody has their issues, he must've had a reason to do so. It would be interesting to know what the note said, but it was probably personal and unlikely to be released. As a big Macross fan, I'm a little saddened to hear such news about any of the staff, but it's not like it was a young unexpected death or some unfortunate accent. I have nothing against suicide in principal, so if he chose to end it, that's his prerogative, I suppose.

What a sad way to end a life. DYRL is like one of Macross' most famous theme if not the most well known of all. Macross will forever remember him.

That must be pretty sad...

Although I have yet to watch the ova, so I don't really know what the song is like but this generally means that the Macross creators have one composer less, quite a pity.

Speaking of which, why would he hang himself when he is already in his 60s? I mean.. The guy composed the song for a Macross ova, isn't that like pretty cool and awesome? I cannot comprehend..

Very sad, I remember this song as I remember this wonderful movie, without the glimpse of a doubt the best thing to ever come out of the Macross franchise. I don't know anything about him apart from this song, but it seems he was a great ballad songs writer. Too bad.

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.

You do realize that 62 is not even remotely near to one's natural life span, right? Especially not in Japan in which the life expectancy is the highest in the world.

Ai oboete imasuku~. Remember to love him, everyone.

The amount of suicidals in the whole world is the highest in Japan, but it's still sad. Will his death note be delivered to the one he loved? It's probably suicide, as he left two copies of his last will.

Too bad he's not that known to people. I really love the song, a new version of it was in Macross Frontier as well, but not by him, though. May he rest in peace.
