Do you have any to recommend, btw? I enjoy Quentin Tarantino-esque types of films, and would be even more thrilled if there were animes like that. I'm getting tired of my storage of really boring garden variety anime like Needless/Schooldays/Serial Experiments Lain. I got a taste of Gantz and Claymore and I'm desperately searching for animes with mature themes and awesome storylines like that.
Did you just compare Needless with Serial Experiments Lain right there? Because I can't think of a single thing they have in common, except maybe for the fact they both targeted at a Seinen audience (apparently).

Also, you haven't watched either of those shows. Needless is probably a "garden variety" anime as you say, but Lain is something quite different entirely, with some of the best mindscrew and mysteries in anime. Also, I have no problem finding unusual/unique anime to watch, you just have to look in the right places to find them.

It doesn't really matter as long as the anime is good, but I tend to lean towards anime with either more complex plots,

Complex types like Death Note would be awesome if the story is planned out well.

I'd say death Note has a very simple plot. Actually, I can't see how anyone could view it as complex - it's straightforward, it introduces as few plot elements as possible, and compresses itself as much as it can to cram the most out of what it introduced.

Complex plots would have tons of subplots, sidestories and interlocking such form some myth arc or what have you.

Personally I don't mind either way. When I write, I overcomplicate, but I like reading/watching/hearing anything from minimally complex L'Etranger to, well, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Monster and anything by Pynchon.

I prefer animes with plots in between complex and simple. Of cuz, if the plot becomes too complex, i'm afraid my little brain can't keep up.

Definitely complex plot overall. However, it also depends on the genre of the show.

I prefer anime with slightly complex plot lines but nothing to confusing or I'll lose interest. I also prefer anime with simplistic plot lines whenever I'm feeling bored and I don't want to think.

Complex plots. Simple ones tend to bore me, and they're almost all the same (comedy, cliché good boy MC...)

Simple plots are better. The more complicated a plot is, the more likely it is to have plot holes.

The complexity is appealing but even more than that is how well written the story is. You can have a very simple story written in a wonderful manner with leads to a nice execution beating the out a complex but bad written story where the elements are all over the place and it's "complexity" is a group of nonsensical stuff.

In conclusion: what truly matters (IMO) is how things are executed more than what are the things being executed. Come'n even a silly out-of-the-mill harem can be awesome if it's properly.

If it's done right, then complex.

If not, then IDC

As in about every one of these questions, it is a matter of execution.

Simplicity as a concept can be very misleading, though. When something looks simple and it works in various levels, it can only be because there is an inherent complexity in its construction. A joke that is able to make laugh and works in repeated instances is not merely the product of chance. A melodrama that makes you cry is probably doing things really well and knowing where and how to focus its drama. And etc.

Complex ones are always better IF they're done flawlessly, plot holes are easy to miss. Simpler ones are a safer pick, but not as high potential.

I think the best anime are simplistic on the surface, but complex if you dig deeper.

i prefer complex, but i have also noticed that when watching a complex story line i find more faults and problems whereas i watch a show where there isn't major plotline and just a slice of life, feel good anime, i am starting to enjoy those more as i can sit back and watch at my own leisure
