Why do people randomly send friend requests on MAL?

Noticed a lot lately that a bunch of people are already aware of people randomly sending friend requests and the amount of random friend requests out there. And the thing is, they don't even send you a comment or anything when they do so.

What I'm curious about is why they do it. Because they're bored? Because ... hell I can't think of a plausible reason other than the fact they're bored. But surely someone here could offer a much more plausible answer.

The other question would be, why would anyone accept them if they've never initiated a chat at all? Even a simple hello could start something. Damn it anonymity. Damn it all.

Because CDRW's fail after a while.

I've gotten quite a few just because of my Pokémon avatar (which is why I changed it).

You can turn that feature off. What I am wondering is why can people randomly view your profile. You can turn off lists and even commenting on your profile, but why can't I turn off everyone but X designated people to view my profile? Whatever the limit is for blocking people isn't enough.

I even had a "No random friend requests" sign thing on my profile for a while; even that didn't stop them. Sighhhh.

Hmm. Maybe they like your taste in anime/manga and in order to keep track on you they want to be your friends. You'll be like a Recommendation page for them and in order to navigate quickly from user to user they just go to their Friends List.
Just a theory.

I don't know what I did, but I haven't gotten any in a while now. Maybe it's because I've ignored every single person like that already. I still get legitimate friend requests, but I ignore those too.

Nahhh. I think it's because my type of humor is too sophisticated to attract the random reqs type. Actually, it's constantly flying right over the heads of even the brightest MALers.

It's also noticeable that most of the time people who type lol don't actually lol. I'm trying to stop that habit of typing lol when all I think of the comment is somewhat more interesting than a dull post, but not at all actually laugh out loud worthy. But not I'm just totally off- topic.

Nobody seem to answer the question though about why people randomly actually accept them, too. I guess they just don't give a shit, or something. But if they didn't care, why not just decline them like me? ):

Hand up for comment requirement per friend request and needs accepting by admin who examines if it's a good enough reason :-P

Why do they send random invites?... because their teens, no further discussion needed at that point hehe :-)

Elitist? For not wanting to be bothered by people you don't know? You know what's like hi on the internet, by the by, saying hi, via a comment.

Yea. There's nothing elitist about denying friend requests. Some people here get more than others -- and -- all too often, they get too much attention for them to handle. Times like that, it's actually better to have a relative few on friend lists, rather than many.

In a pool of, what, a quarter million? Not too unlikely, especially when the bulk of them are teens.

No, it's not like anything, it is what it is, some random person coming up to you and asking you to be their friend.

On that note, I oughta purge my friend list sometime. But not now. >:D

When someone sends me a friend request, then I do the gracious thing and accept it. However, I follow that up with a skeptical, "Who are you?" instead of a "Hello", just to test of a person can handle a slight scare. >:D

Oh snap. I just told one of my secrets!

the same reason that they randomly talk to people, to an extent. a good example is when we first arrive at college freshman year, pretty much anyone will introduce themselves to anyone if not only to make sure they have at least one friend.
i think. i dunno. i actually never add anyone.

yeah but with college you are introducing yourself to people who you are going to be interacting with on a day to day basis.

thats why I said to an extent. I think it's pretty much the same principal, most people being relatively social. That, and the internet craze of seeing how many friends you can rack up on social networking sites. I still do not understand the point of this, but hey, they could be raping and killing instead, so I guess I don't mind.

Honestly, I don't really have a problem when someone add me as a friend, nor do I look at how old is s/he as long as we can form some good conversation.

Even so, I doubt I'll accept anyone else aside of those three friends that I know from other forums, one of them even IRL.

To me Friends list is like a bookmarks for profiles that interests, although, I sometimes visits other profiles when I wish to ask (for) something.

I don't accept random friend requests, but I'd still say that it's more pathetic to complain about them, when you can simply reject them.
