If possible more on the dark-ish side of things, but not necessarily 100% serious.

Sci-fi, fantasy, psychological, mystery, action are all genres I like.

OVA recs from the 80's and 90's are especially welcome.

Thanks!

Thanks, I'll look into both of those.

Would appreciate some more though. Maybe some fantasy ones?

Is Battle Royal High School as trashy as it sounds/as the one review on MAL makes it out to be?

Space Fantasia sounds awesome though and Battle Angel Alita was pretty good too (just seen it today) so I'll give them a try for sure.
I probably regret this post by now.

Just meh show to me, so, yes.

Try Dallos/ Project A-ko/ 5-tou ni Naritai instead if you want.

Seconding Key the Metal idol, Yukikaze, and Space Fantasia 2001 Nights. These are all decent OVAs. As for more recs:

For sci-fi/action, Armitage III for sure. This one is probably most similar to Battle Angel Alita.

For fantasy, Record of Lodoss War is the only big one that comes to mind.

For a mix of a lot of genres, Phoenix: Karma Chapter and Phoenix: Space Chapter were both good. The rest of the Phoenix franchise you would probably enjoy as well.

For psychological/mystery, Twilight Q is an interesting one. The second short by Mamoru Oshii is the stand-out work here, it will definitely mess your brain a little.

Shonan Junai Gumi was a rather good prequel to Great Teacher Onizuka.

And finally Armor Hunter Mellowlink is a very dark, gritty, and ultraviolent revenge tale. It isn't very heavy on the mecha, and you don't have to be familiar with Votoms to watch this one (it is only set in the same universe).

Eve no Jikan(ONA though but easily one of the best ones) the rest of this guy's work is very good as well

R.O.D OVA isn't serious so I dunno if you'll like it but it's a good action flick

+1 :)
Don''t understand why everyone says that this is just an anime just to show some gore.
I really liked it.

Eve no Jikan is already on my list and it was very good indeed.

Read or Die has been mentioned a couple of times to me already, time to check it out. Thanks!

Already seen and it was okay, but not entirely my cup of tea.

For now I'm expecting not much in terms of plot, but if it positively surprises me, even better.
