About Ryuko uniforms and references

http://www.ultraimg.com/images/Dp5T2.jpg
Her jacket resemble the one that Black is wearing in Majisuka Gakuen. It's interesting that this Japanese tv drama is modern version of so called sukeban genre of Japanese movies. They were especially popular in the 70s and 80s (and KlK feels like a homage to 70s) and later inspired Tarantino's Kill Bill. Sukeban literally means delinquent girl or boss girl (in the sense of leader of a girl gang). One of the cliches of those movies are stories about schools full of violence that are ruled by girl gangs and a newcomer transfer girl that must face gang's female leader. They are also often over the top violent. Sukeban was also actual delinquent girl subculture in Japan in 70s which inspired those movies storylines. Sukeban uniforms resemble another Ryuko uniform that can be seen on the KlK poster

http://www.ultraimg.com/images/baeQ.jpg
Yeah it's modern version, second photo is classic 70s one. Nowadays it's something common that filmmakers make changes to this type of uniform (Majisuka Gakuen can be the best example here). It's amazing that KlK staff had such attention to detail that they even gave Ryuko red gloves that became a staple of sukeban uniforms in movies. She has also a lot of malevolence towards her enemies that was typical for sukeban girls. Beside that her motivations are inspired by Cutie Honey (similar backstory about revenge) so there is a Go Nagai's influence. Cutie Honey inspirations (Ryuko's battle uniform, fanservice etc.) shouldn't be surprising because KlK staff made Re:Cutie Honey before TTGL.

tl;dr Attention to detail in KlK is amazing, can't wait for episode 2
Cool info, thanks.

That's awesome, had no idea. TY for info :)!

Glad that you like it :) It's cool that they reference not only old anime but also cinema. I'm curious if there is any deeper meaning behind that Black in Majisuka Gakuen is one of main antagonists.

i don't get it. what's so special about it? don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to pick a fight here, but people were so excited about this anime and i just expected... more tbh.

Because of it's references and homages? Because it's just fun to watch old style anime? Because it has great staff that know what they are doing? I bet that when Evangelion premiered in 1995 some super robot genre orthodoxes also said that they don't get it. In the end NGE became one of most memorable and influential animes. I'm not saying that KlK will be new NGE but just like NGE when it came out KlK is something that a lot of people aren't used to.

Talking about references, did anyone else see the Kinnikuman reference when Mako attacks her brother?

I love shows using such a premise: lone badass outsider fighting against a near unstoppable dystopian force in a post-apocalyptic world. I love this episode (dat budget and animation!), but it seems a genuinely promising premise is wasted on a show designed to shock and awe. The over the top moves (pegasus meteor fist?) and emphasis on special armors/uniforms giving super powers reminds me of Saint Seiya. I would very much prefer a more serious version of the show, but I think it deserves credit for its outrageous (albeit not too original) 'art style'.

You are right. I didn't get it at first but now I see it. Also I see some Hokuto no Ken inspirations behind KlK's dystopian post-apocalyptic world (beside obvious Orwell's 1984 ones) and Gamagori's chara design.

Comical, action packed, beautiful art shots, awesome ost, and the randomness is actually tied to the plot instead of just being random for the sake of itself. If it keeps this up it's an easy 10/10.

They went OLD SCHOOL on this anime :D. crazy actions and fights are not really my thing but the whole thing was amiable. kept laughing throughout the entire fight.

I know the outfit is suppose to be ironic and will probably have some kind of collection power that will cover itself, but i cannot help but laugh when the boxer tried to attack from every direction, she couldn't be hurt, EVEN THOUGH IT DIDN'T COVER MUCH OF ANYTHING!!

This looks to be a very promising series. Reminds me of TTGL with its animation and over-the-topness. Has a unique comedic flair as well.

Speaking of references, I think the scene where Ryuko destroys Fukuroda's uniform is also a Hokuto no Ken reference, particularly the moment where the name of Ryuko's "finishing move" was shown on the screen, coupled with it being announced by a male announcer. Displaying the names of special attacks seems to be a common trait in this show, but Ryuko's was the only one so far that wasn't announced by the character who used it.

Very good episode. Might be too rough or sketchy for some people, but for me it's a solid 5/5 first episode. Definitely watching this one.

THAT WAS ONE HELL OF A RIDE. I love it!!!

As a newbie to action/anythingbesidesshoujo anime, this is really new and fresh even among the anime I've watched! OAO This joins SNK in my list of best anime I've watched recently. Fresh animation style, interestingly exaggerated characters usually seen in older anime - I thought the drawings were gonna be ugly because I'm honestly not a big fan of retro anime style, but this is just like current style with 90s shading and animation! But not really!

Okay not many words can describe this. But I'm incredibly excited to see how it will unfold >3<

This anime has promise. I like the art style and the plot. The action needs a little bit of work in my opinion, but I'd still say it's up to par with a lot of other shows. This definitely does not deserve a 10 after just one episode. I give it a 7 and will enjoy watching the progression. :)

I GOT SO MANY GOOSEBUMPS WATCHING THIS. OVER-THE-TOP LIKE MY ALL CAPS.

Although I find the fanservice a bit weird, it would make a lot of sense if her uniform had to collect strips of clothing from other articles of clothing.

I couldn't grasp anything from this episode besides the uniforms and (half) scissors. The pacing, oh why, I feel like watching anime with 1.5x speed. The comical action is fine and at some point it tends to overdid itself (like the boiling oil tempura guys). The BGM are great, it really grasp the 'badass' vibe necessary for a scene to works.

Amazing first episode. Those were definitely some enthralling fight scenes. Although very little of the plot has been revealed so far, I'm hoping to see that this anime will parallel the intensity and unpredictability of Gurenn Lagann. Also, Simon needs to show that boxer guy how to use a Giga Drill Breaker properly!

Subtlety, you will not be missed. There's a certain flare to it that feels nostalgic, so while it's definitely silly, it's got some weird charm to it. I'll sure as hell follow this show.

It was fun, I guess? Pace was ridiculously fast so I asked myself more than once what it was that I was watching, but that ruins the point of the show I guess...it's certainly different, at least. Nice animation. I'll keep watching.

The OST Composer is Hiroyuki Sawano. He's behind Attack on Titan's OST as well. :)
But I don't know if the background music behind the scene you mentioned has a name yet.

Everyone keeps going on about how intense it was, as if they're taking it seriously! I mean I thought it was pretty good, but as a parody. It's taken loads of anime stereotypes (the epic, the evil overlord, the hero seeking revenge, the high school, the student council president, the fanservice, the school uniforms, the weapons and action) from all different genres, and brought them together to create this insanely OTT parody of anime in general. I thought that was the point.

Anyway whatever, it's quite funny.

First episode was good. Full of action and hints of comedy.
The animation is great.

The fanservice in some scenes was kinda unnecessary, but I can deal with it lol.

I really liked the animation and the action sequences althought it seemed to me like there was too much action to be the first episode, even as everybody compares it to TTGL, KLK has even more action. Then fanservice is even MORE than in TTGL and I'm not sure if I'd like too much of it later. Aside from that, who else got the 1984 reference? or are all you just too uncultured? the nazi references and the ejecution scenes give a hint of somehow fascist goverment made anime, with tits, and TTGL
