There's a certain style from the 90s, which I'm not a big fan of. Stuff like Dirty Pair Flash or Saber Marionette J.

Probably the early transitioning to digital art (early 2000s, or mid-2000s even) and pre-80s (but sure I guess some 70s anime look fine). Actually you know what, as much as I adore 80s anime, a lot of them look straight up ass as well. They seriously look bad, way worse than what we have today. Which probably isn't the highest bar to set.

I mean, '60s. Speed Racer and Astro Boy and shit like that. Pretty much everything else looks totally fine to me in theory, though.

Totally agree. Especially the continued overuse of digital effects and digital coloring like like what was used in Asterisk War, Gamers, Irregular at Magic High School, Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun to name a few from recent memory.
No Game No Life is the only one to use this style that didn't totally offend me.

almost, if not all, of these were from the 2010s tho, some of them at the first half of the decade at that

Definitely agree. It's not even about art style per se, but for some reason a lot of new anime have been looking cheap and ugly, like they've been but together in a week just to get some quick cash. If you look at 2000-2010s anime, even the shitty ones, a lot of them still manage to look charming even if they don't have a huge budget.

1970s I think, from what I remember some anime looked like Disney's Peter Pan, The Sword in the Stone and The Little Mermaid.

I’d say I’m pretty good with all art styles. Maybe early to mid 2000s, the transition to digital animation wasn’t exactly smooth and I feel that this era best represents that.

70s, 80s, 90s, early 00s, 10s, 20s. Beyond ugly and unwatchable garbage.

Anime peaked with the mid to late 00s artstyle wise and then quickly went to shit.

Most 70s look like shit. Early 90s, early 00s, late 2010s are some of the worst with the current early 20s being the absolute lowest. 80s is the first rise, late 90s is decent and mid 00s is the absolute peak.

None of those are styled like the Disney movies you mentioned. Only loosely at best. I wish any looked as good.

most people will say "2000s DigItaL bAd" but it's way better and actually good and well detailed unlike the travesty that is the 2010s onwards
barley detailed
very generic and way too copy pasted designs
oversaturatedly lighten and with terrible color contrast that it can make me go blind
background have no detail at all and look terrible

I agree with that guy
2010s anime designs look really bad, generic, barley detailed, copy basted and brightley lit to the point of making me almost go blind
at least the 2000s art style is detailed, nice, unique and has good lightning and there was variety unlike the copy pasted 1 or 2 styles of the 2010s and hey there was an effort to make the backgrounds look nice
world of narue and love hina have actually good and better artstyles than most of 2010s onwards anime and that's embarising
and while 80s tv anime is rough the movies and ovas of the 80s look very good to this day and still better than the 2010s onwards artstyle

Yeah sure just that the sentence is ridiculous in itself. Sounds like he was making a joke but damn i can't tell.
Also if you've watched anime like s.Cry.ed you'll know what I'm referring to. There's a wave of anime during the 2000s that looks garbage. But sure to each their own, I won't judge.

s cry ed look pretty good though and it's a sunrise production and you might hate the charachter designer hisashi hirai known for gundam seed more than the general 2000s anime designs
the only really bad looking 2000s anime I clould think of is musahi gundoh and that tells you that very few 2000s anime that looked bad

Uh no it doesn't. Again personal taste. No offense but either you're gonna shove what's 'good' into people's mouth or agree to disagree. I don't have much else to add.

For me anime art style really peaked from mid 80s to late 90s but when anime went all digital in early 2000s everything get lost, detailed artwork, dark motion.
Compare the art style hxh 1999 to 2011 you can easily see the difference. 1999 almost looks horror in several moments. Altho i do prefer 2011 bcuz it's complete story.

Japanese depression at 90's affected really hard the taste of the artists. They was just not caring anymore.

Uncultured swine. This was the art style that got me into anime. I miss it dearly.

10s has a lot less variety in character design and background design. Everyone is just trying the meta now, choosing the safest art style and the easiest to draw backgrounds.

00s had more variety in both areas, although the move to digital wasn't an easy one.

The 90s is probably my favorite decade for anime. So many different art styles; Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Giant Robo, Ninja Scrolls and Slayers.

The 2000s Clannad-style that was seen in a lot of other anime too. They look like their eyes are kinda melting out of their face and I just can't ... also all of these romance-drama with artstyles like these got incredibly annoying female characters.

Clannad. When 70 percent of your head is made of soul piercing eyes, Nightmare fuel is born.

It's not only that they are too big and that there is almost no white from the eye. The lower eyelid is far too inclined, when it shouldn't be.

Also some 90s and art styles from old shoujos.
What is this ...

I think this video sums it up

At least there's one good thing. It's now associated with 2000s era electronic music, so I guess I can find good tunes by looking at the art style in the thumbnail

I also don't like how a lot of 2000s anime look but that's mostly a technical thing (digital TV production sucked then) and not a design thing.

tbh i think the reason 2010 designs are seen as boring is cause basically all of the past shows that have aired (and by extension the shows you have seen) have basically all be in that style
its like how someone in the 70s could say that a 70s style is boring cause all the anime they watch is from the 70s and that would be understandable

To be fair, most 2000s anime had that ugly moe style, but 2020s, you can blame covid for some of that.

I'd say whatever era we're going through now is the ugliest. It's so bland and lacks character. The most common answer I've seen here is the 'Clannad' art style, but at least it has character. You can kind of tell what kind of anime they're from just because of their big ol' bug eyes, meanwhile I can barely tell anime today apart. The romance anime look just like the action.

Everybody saying the 90s and 2000s are the worst have no taste smh.

I'd personally have to go with the 2020s. Even with what little we've seen of this decade's aesthetics, so far it still seems lacking.
