Very rarely do I feel as moved by an anime as I did with this short, 6 episode series. As someone who didn't shed a single tear watching Grave of the Fireflies, I don't usually come on here to comment of just any anime/manga. But oh god did this anime hit home and hit home hard. Perhaps it's because of the rawness in the way the bullying was depicted, or maybe it's the fact that the creators made no attempt to censor the worst of it, but I couldn't bring myself to look away, no matter how brutal it got. I was a victim of school bullying right when I first started school at 2.5 years of age (playgroup) up to 1st grade, and it has shaped my entire childhood as well as the person I am now, 18 years later, so I appreciate the existence of an anime like this which is so honest in it's depiction.

P.S.- It would have been nice if a stupid, pink little octopus appeared in my childhood at the height of my school bullying days. Idk if it would've helped but I think I would've been comforted at the least.

Retconnection to the power of friendship. Damn, the idea is so popular...

This anime has a very important message about dealing with pain. But you can't really show it with a pink alien doing weird things (and killing Marina by the way, but well, not really).

I'm disappointed because of the hype, so I'm glad that I finished, it was already a pain to see after the first two episodes. But I admit the animation is always great and the message is strong.

So I'll give a 6/10 and I'll move on from this anime and it's stupid ending.

finally a 9/10 anime after a drought of mid animes. first off, amazing animation. the abuse shown kinda hit home for me when the mom gave the dude pancakes after failing the test gahdamnnn... show was kinda edging near constant torture porn territory but i really liked that wholesome convo with the older and younge brother. the ending was resolved great too. rip my nigga takopi tho. realest nigga ive ever seen. looking forward to whatever the author and this studio has next. show was well worth the binge and skipping job interview prep lol

Takopi used his entire lifeforce to send back memories of generational trauma... Joking of course, Takopi finally fixed something by creating something they share in common (good thing they don't remember driving each other to death). Too bad Takopi couldn't fix their parents marriages, Marina getting the scar is a cannon event. Azuma slipped away from the trio at the end, but he got to connect with his bro which means he's also no longer alone.

I cried at the scene where Shizuka's beating the shit out of Takopi, not bc Takopi's hurting, but bc I can feel Shizuka's hatred thru that crashout. Shizuka's VA did a great job there.

When I looked at the poster of this show, I thought it would be an upbeat show with lots of comedy about a little girl and her alien friend. But it subverted that expectation just minutes into the first episode. This show is heavy, very heavy. With themes of bullying, violence, child abuse, neglect, infidelity, abandonment, murder, depression, and suicide. It as all too much at first. I had originally wanted to drop it after 2 episodes but I was glad I didn't. Ultimately, this show attempted to portray a very human story. There is no morally black or white in any of it's characters. You can't really say who among these kids are the protagonist/antagonist, they're all gray. Which is very human. As Naoki said "There is a good and there is a bad in each person". The actions that the characters took are morally impure. But I feel like they were all driven to it. Each of us has a dark side in us which is very true, everyday is a struggle to give in to this side. In the end the show is a cautionary fantasy tale that seeks to warn us about this side of human nature.

Overall: 8/10 for me.

Chappy is still alive and well. Bro was never sent off to the animal shelter to probably be put down. That alone makes this worthy of a 10/10. And RIP to Takopi. Bro was the goat.

Takopi probably sent off a dying wish to his people back on happy planet to relay the message that Azuma told him to tell his younger self, because clearly he had that argument that he wanted to have with his big brother which would allow Azuma to connect with him and erase all the misconceptions and dark thoughts he was having in his head. Maybe a bit of a loose end, but let's just assume that's what happened, and it doesn't matter anyway since Azuma is happy now. Good on him as well for being the one to tell Takopi what it meant to be human.

While it no doubt happens off-screen eventually, Marina still needs to bow her head and say sorry to Shizuka big time. She better buy her lunch or do her homework for a year at least. Speaking of Marina, I am beyond glad with how they handled her character. At first I thought she was dead for good in episode 2, that that was her only purpose for the story, a one-dimensional bully for Shizuka, and that the story would continue to focus on Shizuka alone. Then we move on, and while we see that's not the case, she does still die by ending her life after killing her own mother. I thought then THAT would be the end for her character arc. Now that would've been depressing. But with this new timeline, would Marina still kill her mother, followed by her killing herself? No, give me hope fam. As unhinged as Marina's mom is, I'd like to think of that exact situation and moment of Azuma not coming to dinner as THE tipping point for her going berserk. But with Azuma now in a more clear and level-headed mindset, he probably doesn't fall in head-over-heels for Shizuka as he sees her as someone to sympathize with. Shizuka herself has a load off her shoulders with Marina no longer bullying her. Marina and Azuma coming together in this new timeline and Azuma coming for dinner this time is not too far-fetched.

This ending sticks the landing, but not before doing a backflip off a plane through a ring of fire. Didn't know exactly what kind of ending we needed, but this right here is what it had to be. Something real, something still residing in darkness, but something that gives you hope.

The circumstances surrounding both Shizuka and Marina didn't change for either of them. They were both dealt a shit hand in life, and Takopi couldn't change that- but it didn't mean he could do absolutely nothing. Although it is nothing which Takopi accomplishes- almost. Before departing he leaves but maybe a memory of himself in the two. And through a but a doodle in a notebook, a distant memory, he brings two hurting souls, two individuals who had no one, to find each other.

Marina is best girl, Shizuka is an awful satellite character, a parasite, inb4 I'm hating on Shizuka, I meant awful story-wise I actually like Shizuka, I ship these two

takopii said the camera was broken so it definitely would be a plot hole if he just used himself as energy, but there's really no justifying magic or even scifi with this level of technology that is on the level of magic, you can't justify magic

so my interpretation is, takopii morph himself into that gadget and used himself as energy, we've seen takopii morph to an extent even without that specific morph gadget, like extending limbs, extracting and contracting etc.

also as for takopii status, it's kinda an open to interpretation, they seem to have no concept of death that's why they don't even know what "kill" means, so depends on you I guess, but my interpretation is he just lost his body which is just data, im assuming his consciousness just went back to his planet, I don't think he's not allowed to go back, the rules seems to have something to do with not coming back "alone" which is happy memories I guess which he now has, god damn I'm a genius

this is an 8/10 like the manga, both did some things better separately

@Dragonobo

In anime, "shipping" refers to the act of fans pairing up fictional characters in a romantic relationship, even if that relationship doesn't exist in the original source material.

sounds like you just simply have a dirty mind dragonobo, you're jumping to something sexual, stop projecting

This was a disappointment. Not sure if it was worth sitting through the many deeply-uncomfortable scenes.

There's a lot I liked, or at least respected. The art and animation were great. It felt like a lot of passion and care and time was put into this. The voice acting for the three kids hit hard. It tackled a very difficult subject matter. Some moments and characterization felt so real that I was squirming in my seat.

But I'm just really frustrated with the writing choices. The story was meandering and vague and had nothing really meaningful to say in the end. Marina's death was an interesting twist, but the anime kind of forgot about that. The alternate timeline twist with a high-school Marina was contrived, confusing, unsatisfying and mostly pointless. The final sacrifice of Takopii did not really make sense, both story-wise and thematically; why he did it, how he did it, what the anime was trying to say. I felt nothing as Takopii started glowing and disappeared.

And the bigger issue: the degree of cruelty and tragedy piled on top of each other was teetering on misery porn. It's a world where literally every adult is absent, apathetic or full-on abusive. The repeated, extended violence against children, often involving sharp objects. But I held on and gave the anime the benefit of the doubt, because the answer would've depended on whether there's a point to all of this. And after the sugar-coated, hand-wavy ending, I'm still on the fence.

The overwhelming praise this seems to be getting is puzzling. The cynic in me has me thinking that this shot up in rankings purely because it even dared to talk about this stuff at all, with multiple high-stress/high-emotion sequences. It's a rarity in this day and age, I guess. Very curious about how this anime will be talked about years down the line.

Probably one of the best anime of the year, it was really a rollercoaster of emotions, obviously it's not a series for everyone, it's a bit sad to see the superficial analyses they've done to it some, it surely has flaws like all works after all but people focus on the realism of the scenes instead of analyzing the message, takopi is very exaggerated in its representation about bullying and this is precisely its strong point, in my opinion many expected a much more didactic series and were disappointed, but I appreciate the fact that the show makes you think especially through the direction that literally speaks for itself, It's a very introspective series and many have failed to interpret the messages and have focused on superficial things, in fact if you notice, unlike the praises, the criticisms are always the same, that is, that the series became famous only because it is violent or that it is misery porn, These points don't make sense because they already exist, especially in anime, violent series like this one. Of course, if you only analyze the anime superficially, it's normal for it to seem like an edgy thing but you just have to understand that this series takes the concept of adults mistreating minors to the extreme, which is why they are all bad representatives, but this doesn't mean that the anime wants to tell you that all adults are bad, in fact even children themselves are no longer pure when hatred affects them too, it seems absurd to me that people stop at a analyzing all this in such a banal way, the strength of Takopi is precisely that of showing you things without having to be didactic

Ps: Anyone who hates him for his high score is just plain stupid, like those who hate Frieren because he is in first place, they are both of great quality and haters don't have a functioning brain, like the guys below me

if I wanted to say anything about this anime, not the manga just the story of the anime it’s good to give four out of five. It’s just annoying the ending does not make sense. Lots of scenes needed extreme explanation to understand so many hyper reactions that does not reflect any real life even the children this story do not think as a children do not act as a children the only real thing in this story is the divorce shit but even this was exaggerated the octopus in the story did not even progress in any kind of way kept saying sorry the entire story. The voice acting was not something crazy. It was good nothing special kept repeating the same sentences. The music was good put in the right place at the right moment yet it was not heat touching due to the lack of developing feelings for the characters, it was a mess and one of the worst 140 minutes I’ve watched in short the anime deserve 8/10 but I would only recommend it to the people. I hate.

It is one of those endings where you value the the journey leading to a very optimistic ending. The show did not hold back each episode and really left myself shocked and saddened by the efforts of Takopi ending in disaster at each turn. It really felt like this last episode might end very grim based on how the 5 episodes went. Takeopi's heart and care for all the character's, through out the episodes really left a lasting impressions that positively impacts the characters. Sacrificing everything for one last chance to everyone to do better, the most selfless thing to cap off its character arc. Takopi never gave up on anyone and ultimately did everything it could, regardless of its limited ability or understanding.

In the end Takopi sacraficed his life for their joy. It's saddening he never got to go home. At least everyone is holding on now and aren't as lonely anymore. Interesting I didn't realise that Azuma was also time travelling back and forth. When the flashback squence happened I just assumed that was him replaying the events in his head.

A really nice final episode. I was a bit confused with the ending but it was just really really nice seeing Marina and Shizuka finally having a normal conversation, and judging by the post credit scene becoming friends as well. It seemed a bit too quick but I’m just very happy for them, and kinda drowns out any questions or inconsistencies I have with the ending. Overall an absolutely incredible anime

A fatalistic series that is difficult to digest, very sensitive and with a well-rounded ending.

My takeaway from this was that the situation resolved itself without Tokopi getting involved after the picture was taken. A little bit of fragmented lingering memory was the catalyst to make both girls come together and deal with their continuing issues. Even though both girls are still dealing with their problems at least this time they can support each other through it without victimizing one another.
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.
