wow thanks a lot MatijaxD , I didn't intended to make you write that much , I hope it wasn't a bother , I don't know how much time it took you to write .
Haha, don't worry about it, if it would be a bother I would make it much shorter :P Once I started I just kept going, I like writing about this sort of stuff, maybe I should make some reviews.
Now I made you write a long reply, sorry about that xD

I get what you mean and I kinda felt the same but that never really bothered me so far and I didn't think that Annarasumanara was heavy on it. But then again I didn't really notice things like that until recently so maybe it will start bothering me as well.

I consider Taiyou Matsumoto to be "the master of the melancolic feel"
That sounds great, I will probably love his manga. I'm a big fan of "Ping pong the animation" so I have high expectations for his work :D

For me it's definitly "Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou", "Gunslinger Girl" and "Homonculus" (but I really liked "Sakamichi no Apollon" too) .
Those all seem like great manga and I have already been planing on reading all of them, especially Yokohama and Homunculus.

Wow, MatijaxD. Our taste in manga is pretty darn similar.
This manga challenge has been awesome for me so far. I started over from scratch, and I was able to successfully force myself to read manga that I probably would've never motivated myself to read otherwise. When I finish, I'll probably go for a second or even a third run.

For manga that stands out, it'd probably be Eden: It's an Endless World!, Blame!, and Saishuu Heiki Kanojo (although this one's for better or worse)

As the one modifying the list is a single person, not everyone can get added to the list immediately, or even a day or two after they started. It's not that you were forgotten, the list simply hasn't been updated to that point yet. :)

As HeNrYTG50 said (Thanks for helping!), I'm the only one updating the list and I take a couple of days to add people to the list. I'll do it in a bit.

Hello, I just saw the sign-up thread yesterday and I feel like this challenge will motivate me to read more manga and thus I'll make my sign-up form in the evening. I got 1 question - do I add titles I've finished before I sign-up ? (of course started after 1st of January)

Just as the other users said, you can, but you don't have to. Personally, I started from scratch, but other users used stuff they had read before sign up. It's really up to you.

@Dullboy I feel a bit tempted to say that Dragon Head is one of my favorites and I disagree a bit with MatijaxD's opinion, but you know sometimes things can be just about taste. I can agree with most of the characters being superficial but I didn't feel the same about the ending. We've had lots of opposite opinions when it comes to taste though, so maybe it really isn't for you.

Thanks to both for your comments though. I definitely think Sakamichi no Apollon is a great read, so I second that as a rec, and after this I really should get myself in gear and finish Yokohama which I started quite a while ago.

Oh, Dullboy, I forgot to mention it before, but I noticed we both read the same Tezuka manga, what did you think of it?

Haha, that's nice.
For me the challenge made me stick with manga that I would usually drop so it was a bit bothersome, but that was my own fault for wanting to finish the challenge as soon as possible. :D
Maybe I'll join for another round latter on and make it more enjoyable for myself, but I'd like to finish some stuff that I started last year or even earlier first. The challenge kept me from completing those because I was rushing it.

I tried Eden but end up dropping it, I'll most likely give it another chance some other time. I didn't like it's attitude, I felt like it was showing off how realistic and intelligent it was in a too direct way and that bothered me.

Well I might have made it sound much worse than it actually is, it's not like I didn't enjoy it at all, it was quite hard to stop reading at times.

Ah , I dropped it too . it was more than one years ago so I don't recall it that much , but for some reason it bothered me too , but I don't think it's because I felt some pretenciousness or "realistic feel" , it was more about the overal way of thinking life , the views of the author , maybe , I don't know .
I think it's really true for manga , more than anime and such , sometime you just disagree with the way of thinking of the author , and you can't connect with it (or the exact reverse of course ,when it "hit home" very hard) .
No in fact it migth just have been that I didn't felt like reading any sci-fi take at that time ^^

For Dragon Head , I know myself , so I'll end up reading some of it one day or another out of curiousity anyway .

tsuyokunaru said:
Oh, Dullboy, I forgot to mention it before, but I noticed we both read the same Tezuka manga, what did you think of it?
I saw that yes . Well I don't remember it that much , it was nice , some stories were more interesting than others , but Tezuka is definitly not one of my favorit author . His works don't leave me to much impression after . For what I have read , it really is well crafter stories , but that's all there is for me . It's simple in fact , I think it's because it's old , and by that I mean that the way of thinking of today and mentality are not the same as back then and so on . It doesn't mean you can't appreciate it , but it stay "distant" one way or another . There is a lot of counter exemple for what I said , but that's the way I feel with him at least .

for Yokohama , there is a relaxed mood to have to read it (or it can bring it to you reading it) . Reading it in a hurry or feeling like it's a duty and something to do to complete the challenge , that would definitly hinder the pleasure ^^ .

It looks like you dropped it at three chapters (including the long-ass prologue). I think it might seem like that mostly because it's trying to establish context. I don't recall it seeming condescending when I was reading it.

Yeah, that's what I felt as well. The stories were a bit disconnected sometimes, but knowing that some of them can still make an impression after so long it's a bit nice. I liked the art more than I thought I would, to be honest, but some of the repetitive concepts across stories left me a bit cold. Yokohama is definitely relaxing and I felt that when I started reading it. I have the same feeling with this as I have with other slice of life work, that there's this feeling that I'm losing a great part of the manga while I read it even if I take my time with it. It's like a tiny fear. It's probably a bit ridiculous too, but I remember thinking that it was so pretty and the universe was so puzzling and interesting.

As my own contribution to the discussion above, I tried reading Eden too and it was very easy for me to get into it at first, but also very hard for me to follow it, for some reason. I haven't given up on it yet, but I think I'll let more time pass before I attempt to finish it.

It's me again (sorry) .

After some thoughts , I decided it was time for me to do the challenge again . I think that this challenge push me in the good way to read more manga and be more focus , having a goal to achieve really help me not just be lazy , do nothing and then regret it at the end of the day .
Moreover , I should be hitting my 200th completed manga entry during this second time , and I aim to do some little review of the 200th manga I will read like this , as a sort of personal celebration .

Now , my planning list :

This time I authorised myself to have still ongoing/not completely translated manga . Took me some time to make this planning list , but I think I'm quite happy with it an it sound good to me , now the only thing left is another challenger recommendation...well...I'm all ears ^^ .
I am open to any sugestion , the list is not fixed .

So , tsuyokunaru , do I simply have to post another "Sign Up formular" in the other thread ? I guess other users already did some second turn or are doing it no ?

All right , I did the sign up form again !
If you or anybody else is interested in some of the manga I plan to read, I could provide feedback after completing them (if my opinions looks any good to you of course) , I'll gladly do some "little reviews" here .

Yes, I'd be interested in your general opinion of One Punch-man, Eden, Beck and Black Jack mostly, but I'd read mini-review of all if you wanted to write them. Your opinion is refreshing to me sometimes because it can differ from my own and it's cool to see other points of view.

I finally have more time for manga, so I participate. I don't have anything planned out yet, but still have a few ideas for some categories. But still, there are few categories, where I'm totally planless, like the "manga you relate to" and the "genre you dislike", but I will find a way.

What counts as reading a manga?

- If it's a manga I finished this year but started reading last year can I include it?
- If it's an ongoing series but I catch up to the latest (or at least, latest translated) chapter, can I include it?

It has to be a manga you started this year.
If you catch up to the latest chapter you can include it, but same as above.

(excuse the double post, but)

I spent some time planning out what manga to read for this challenge, and I've come up with:

➤Read a one-shot Tiger Dragon Brothers
➤Read a manga published before the 90s Rose of Versailles, Ashita no Joe (Might even end up reading both)
➤Read a manga published after the 90s not simple
➤Read an award-winning work Disappearance Diary
➤Read a compilation by different authors Japan as Viewed by 17 Creators
➤Read a manga by Osamu Tezuka Adolf
➤Read a manga that is tagged with a genre you dislike Onii-sama e...
➤Read a debut manga
➤Read a manga that became a prototype for a longer running series Koe no Katachi
➤Read a manga adapted from a different source (i.e. original anime/light novel/videogame) All You Need is Kill
➤Read a manga that has been adapted to live action Ping Pong
➤Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you Solanin
➤Read a manga with a target demographic that can apply to you Hagoromo Mishin
➤Read a manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic Mahoutsukai no Yome
➤Read a manga with a score of or below 7 in MyAnimeList
➤Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList Koe no Katachi
➤Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username Pluto
➤Read a manga that has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc)
➤Read a manga that has a one word title Majo
➤Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships Karakuri Odette
➤Read a manga with children in it Sunny
➤Read a manga about food Kodoku no Gourmet
➤Read a manga about music Full Moon wo Sagashite
➤Read a manga about war
➤Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga Nijigahara Holograph

Can anyone help with some suggestions for the ones in bold? Is there anything on my PTR list that fits the criteria? Or if not, could I get some suggestions? http://myanimelist.net/mangalist/Pond&status=6&order=0

I was thinking of slotting Yunagi no Machi Sakura no Kuni in for 'Read a manga about war' because it deals with the aftermath of World War 2... but I don't know if that counts as 'about war', strictly speaking.

For the manga with a score below 7 , I would recommend Harukaze no Snegurochka . (I think it's only rated below 7 because very few people rated it)
It's quite original and unique , only one volume . The setting in the USSR is very interesting , and it kind of play with a "historical mystery" . My only complain is that it contain a rape scene (I prefered to warn you , but well it's not as difficult to handle than , let say , in the famous "Berserk" and such , so it shouldn't rebute you from reading it) . The art is very good too (same author of "Blade of the immortal") .

For the "professional in his field" , I personaly intend to read Shigeshoushi , it seems a good amont of other people readed it for the challenge too .

I hope you'll read "Ashita no Joe" , it's really a brilliant manga . "Sunny" is excellent too .

By the way , "Karakuri Odette" looks interesting to me , but are you sure it "focuse on non-romantic relationships ?" I say that because the tag say "romance" , so I just want to be sure it can fit if I want to use it for that entry too .

Thank you for the suggestions! I really like the look of Harukaze in particular.

I wasn't sure about Karakuri Odette; when I heard about it I thought, 'robot learning to get along with humans, non-romantic relationships, I guess?' but didn't notice the romance tag. I'm planning to read it anyway, so I'll decide later whether I can use it for that entry.

haha , nice to have that unexpected fast feedback about it , thank you ^^

Mmmh , I saw that you say the story loose steam after some time...would you still recommend it to read then ?

On another topic , Basilisk was a huge disappointment to me . I guess the anime adaptation is better for once (but it's not like I saw it so I won't advance myself) . Nothing to be interested with , big problems with the ugly and grotesque characters that have nothing for them and no background . The manga was extremelly liveless .

@ReaperCreeper I saw your list! Some pretty good stuff there. Congrats.

So you guys, I need your help with a debut manga. I would want some at least 1 volume long and well, I hope I can get a couple of recs to choose from, otherwise, I might consider changing that item.

It's already on your plan-to-read list, but I suggest Kakukaku Shikajika for any of these categories:
➤Read a manga published after the 90s (2011)
➤Read an award-winning work (Manga Taisho)
➤Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (i.e. shoujo if you're a male in his 20s, etc) (according to your profile you're a dude, and this is a josei)
➤Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList (criminally underrated 8.58)
➤Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant (me)
➤Read a slice of life OR comedy manga (slice of life)

Right now I'm planning on reading RG Veda, CLAMP's debut, for this category. I also want to read something more substantial than a oneshot or one-volume but it's really rare for an author to get serialised on their first attempt and RG Veda is the only 'long' debut I'm sure of.

That's the only candidate I know for sure is a debut - I was also thinking of reading Yami no Purple Eye or Holyland because they're the oldest works of their mangaka on MAL chronologically, but maybe there was a oneshot or two that isn't in the database that came before those. RG Veda is definitely CLAMP's debut so with that choice at least I'm sure.

Oh! I've been planning to read Yami no Purple Eye for a long time. I'll check if I can find if it's a debut work or not and if it's not, I'll go with RG VEDA too. Thank you for the rec.

I might check out Palepoli as well! I quite like Furuya.

I just checked Japanese Wikipedia, which says Chie Shinohara debuted in 1981. Purple Eye was published in 84, so, not a debut, sadly. :<

For the manhua I recommend Orange (and if you like it , you could look at Savior after). It's all about the art style, it's worth checking in my opinion .

Thank you both. the list of manga about kids you gave me is impressive sooru. Top two especially seem pretty interesting, I'll check one of them out, probably a few on the list eventually. I did want to avoid using oneshots too much for the challenge, but I'm sure one couldn't hurt so I'll give orange a try too.

That's unfortunate :( Well, at least now I have 2 to choose from!

Question: if I'm re-reading something, does it matter if I'd previously not read all of it? I got through I think about half of Angel Sanctuary a few years back and I'd like to reread it, but I'm not sure if it would count seeing as I hadn't finished it.

It doesn't matter that much in the long run I suppose, since I can put it down as a manga for another challenge, but I'd still like to know.

Is anything with only 1 volume considered a one shot?

A one-shot is something with only one chapter.

If you're using something for re-read, then you should've previously completed it.

@AudioTsunami As ReaperCreeper said, one-shot is a one chapter manga. 1 volume (if it's multi-chaptered) is too much for a one-shot challenge.

I was wondering (for both the anime and manga challenge), are we required to use the participant/completion banners provided? Or can we make our own?

Sorry if this is answered somewhere else and my eyes just skipped past it =).

You don't even have to use one , it's just for the fun ^^ . And a lot of banners have been made by other users during the challenge . In fact I think you are quite encouraged to do your own , and if you want you could share the result here so that tsuyokunaru add it to the "sign up thread" first post with the others (or just keep it for you , it's nice to be unique sometime huhuhu)
