| Well... I consider myself a complete newb. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm casual, but I haven't been watching anime that long and I also don't have much time at all for binge watching it either. Imo, most people on MAL are "hardcore" anime fans, and there's not a lot of newbs like me. However, you can have watched very little anime and be "hardcore" or 600 days of anime and be considered "casual". It all depends on how much FREE time you devote to anime, and how long you've been watching it. |

| I don't think people know what the word "casual" means.... I'm gonna make a sports analogy cuz that's what I know most about. In Sports, a casual fan is someone who typically does NOT follow the ongoings of a particular sport, however he usually does root for a specific team and even goes to the games on occasion or watches them at home. A casual sports fan will NOT watch a full season.... A casual sports fan will NOT know a lot of information regarding the league or the teams, players, etc... A casual sports fan is typically NOT passionate about the sport/team. Ok....so now let's apply something similar to that in anime. A casual anime fan usually does NOT follow the ongoings of the anime industry... A casual anime fan will NOT know a lot of information regarding the anime industry when it comes to specifics... A causal anime fan will probably see some shows but will typically not be too interested in anime nor will he/she watch it regularly. I truly believe the MAJORITY of MALers are NOT Casual anime fans. Your average MALer KNOWS about the industry just by coming on this site and reading up on news and having anime discussions. Your average MALer sees anime more than just "once in awhile" especially if they're engaging in anime discussions. The problem is that your Average MALer is also doesn't want to be labeled an "Otaku" or "weeaboo" or whatever, so he will simply say he's a casual. But I think there are other levels. You can say you're a Regular anime fan that follows the industry, watches x amount of shows every season, knows about the studios, knows about the seiyuus, probably reads manga, and hell probably even buys merchandise. I see nothing wrong with that. Hardcore or extremist fans are probably those that binge watch like crazy and have decided to revolve an inordinate amount of time to anime. ^At least that is my personal opinion. BTW, I consider myself a "Regular anime fan".....I watch about 5 or so new shows every season, I read manga when I can and I even have some merchandise. |

| I guess "casual" doesn't have a very strict definition. I don't know what I am then. I watch at least one episode a day, but some people might see that as "not watching anything". I guess it's hard to give a Boolean value to a person's fan status when you have to consider so many things. |

| In the end it doesn't really matter what you call yourself... The important thing is to not allow something like anime to consume your life to the point where it affects it in a negative manner. It's probably NOT a good idea to binge watch anime all day and not eat or take a shower.... It's probably NOT a good idea to indulge yourself in the world of anime so much that you start acting like the characters or you no longer want to be part of the real world, or some nonsense like that... If anime is your hobby and it truly brings you joy, then go for it! But like a wise man once said, "Everything in moderation". |
