As everyone else mentioned, this took me to an emotional roller-coaster ride. I know this is far from what the movie wants the viewers to learn, but this just reminded me to avoid friends and close relationships as people can be asshole. Yes, by that I mean all of Ishida’s classmates who basically pinpointed all the bullying to him. Which led to Ishida not being able to look on anyone.

I tried to held back tears as much as possible, because crying will affect my mood for the rest of the day, but it really hit me hard when Nishimiya family kneeled down to apologize. From there I already let the waterworks run until the end.

I will never get why is everyone comparing this to Kimi no Na Wa. Both movies are great on its own. The former generally tackles friendship (I never really felt like there is romance here, except the tsuki part), while latter is more on romantic pursuit.

Also, if you can empathise with Ueno’s bitchy character, then you deserve an award. I rarely hate on an anime character or real person even, but I despised her throughout the film, even in the end.

Great movie.

BUt what I really enjoyed about this movie were its atmosphere and how IT WAS NEVER HYPER. They never went hyper with stuff. They kept it smooth and slow-paced, and I loved that.

Great movie. I really thought I was gonna be disapointed by it like in Your Name due to its immaturity and rolling eyes scenes, but nope.

This movie was fantastic.

Sound design and osts were truly amazing. They really thought about every single detail and put that into the work, great job! Also I really liked the way they draw and colour. I had a feeling that every moment was like high quality wallpaper. Story was good, could've been better. I cannot complain tough.

what a beautiful movie, after reading up on some analysis and the flower language of koe no katachi, i'm in awe, will definitely re-watch.

really loved shouya's character. one of the most well-written characters - so many redeeming qualities, so human, so realistic, change doesn't happen overnight, his character evoked so many emotions. and miyu irino did a PERFECT job with the VA, i was speechless during shouya's soft-spoken scenes they were beautiful and brought tears to my eyes, 10/10 for his VA.

So basically I got destroyed a second time by KyoAni, the first time was Clannad and then this... it's an absolutely masterpiece.

I heard a lot of positive words about this movie, but I was disappointed. It was simply boring with flat and unrealistic characters. The visuals could've been better, the music was alright, but rest was mediocre at best.

The concept was original and it had potential, yet it was limited to only the fact that Nishimiya was deaf and had problems because of that... and that's it. We couldn't see much of how she sees the world around her etc., but instead we received another story about redemption and maturing of an asshole who became a hero in the end. Meh.

I am quite naive, because I could expect it after reading that KyoAni created this movie, but I really had hopes that "Koe no Katachi" will be a different story - not another moe stuff with simplified plot and with characters so bland that it made everything really hard to watch, sometimes even boring.

The score is quite high. Does this movie deserve to have over 9/10 mean score? Dunno, most of people really enjoyed it, so I guess yes. I, personally, did not like that movie. It was not tragic, but I don't consider it even as average, unfortunately.

I just finished this film and I don't really know what to do with myself right now.

It was simultaneously a masterpiece and yet I'm not sure they handled certain things in the best way. I cried all the way through though so it definitely had a massive impact on me - I dunno, I'm just a bit lost after watching it. Great film though. 9/10?

I was left in utter awe by this film! It is absolutely beautiful and warm. The way everything was dealt with, the mature touching on suicide and what drove our characters to it, and especially everyone's redemptionin the end! 10 out of 10!

Fantastic anime. I thought it did a really good job of making you feel sorry for Shoko and later, Shoya.
Unfortunately, the ending felt rather rushed and we never got to see if the two fell in love.

One of my few anime to get a 10/10 from me. It made me think a lot about bad things that I have done in dealing with the world. I liked the characters since none were completely one sided and it had surprises along the way. Good stuff and should have watched it years ago.

Life is hard and this strike me down for a moment, I would probably never watch it myself if my little sister didn't surprise me with that. But I finished the movie and I am glad I did.

Amazing how they managed to tell a story about a deaf victim and his bully go through hell and redeem themselves at the end. Very in-depth plot with. superb animation + OSTs. Also, one of the best character mc and fmc development I have seen so far.

One thing that I didn't fully understand by first view was one of the triggers that motivated Shoko to confess her feelings with her own voice.

There are other moments which I felt first hard to understand but which has implications and reasons why made so.

I think the reason there are psychological reasons for why she wanted to use her voice. She had been bullied for being deaf for so long. She, like many other people with a problem that makes them more unique than the majority of the people around them, wanted to use her voice to sound more normal. Ofc. she wanted to be normal and be seen as a normal girl in Ishida's eyes.

But later on, after he has recovered, you can see that they are using sign language to express that they love each other. At that point, both of them have accepted who they are and also accepted the actions of their past. This is only my interpretation, but that's the feeling I got. :)

This movie made me angry. It was honestly way too fucked up, sad, and hard to watch. I honestly feel so bad for Naoka, im about to cry. I felt terrible for the deaf girl until she tried killing herself, after that I lost respect for that bitch. I am also not too fond of the MC, didnt like him.

I accidentally bumped into the show on TV and rewatched part of it again. After all, the most heavy part was the following, since all the people fall into one of these categories.

"Ueno, don't judge things with your standard.
Sagara, you always run away from what you don't want to face.
Kawai, you only care about yourself.
(Nagatsuka,) don't judge people you don't know well.
(Mashiba,) don't judge things you don't know well."

The reason it was on TV today? Because it's a promotion for "Fumetsu no Anata e" that was made by the same author and is airing now.

Is this the anime people wont stop praising? It's obvious from the get-go that it uses Bullying as a emotional bait and ofcourse people took that bait. Because they like to pretend they would be the buliied one or at-least help the one being bullied but in reality we all know they would be the bullies or the lackey of a bully. With it's one dimensional characters I felt sorry for expecting much from this.

I keep seeing the take that this is a lot better than your name so naturally I had a bit of a high expectation. Maybe its because I heard that manga readers tend to dislike this because of it having alot of cut scenes and me thinking at the back of my mind what those were which took the immersion out of the movie, idk.

I can't help but think that I missed out on so much because I didn't read the manga.

Anyway, compared to other movies, there isn't really like a dramatic soundtrack used over a dramatic scene but you can still feel emotional over the "emotional scenes". Maybe if those scenes were built up more like it would in an anime then they'd be way more impactful.

The whole time I felt like nothing or everything was happening. There's so much stuff that just happens but the characters don't develop that much. Only in the end where we did see some growth. Maybe that was the point though. That we're flawed. We keep seeing these problems but end up not trying to change anything. What they say contradicts what they do.

Overall I think its a beautiful mess. Some parts caught me almost crying and some had me mad lol. I did like the end though.

maybe i just cant think straight its 4am

Just watched this on a whim and I'm ultimately glad I did. This is definitely a movie where its effectiveness depends on how much it connects with the viewer, and for me it didn't land quite enough for me to love it outright even though it is a work of art. On a technical level this movie is a masterpiece, the visuals, sound design, music, voice acting, it's all impeccable. The story itself is very raw and hard to watch at times, starting off strong before settling into a more laid back vibe which wasn't quite as engaging for me. The journey the main character goes on is nice to watch though and I'll no doubt need a rewatch down the road to appreciate this film more. Just wish Shouko got a bit more focus as her character still felt a tad distant and underdeveloped by the end, even if it was easy to sympathize with her. Overall, a beautiful film that I'm looking forward to re-visiting to see if I can broaden my perspective on it and what it was trying to say.

I cried at least 7 times watching this lol.

Really beautifully done, the emotions I felt with this are on the level of my 10's if not greater, but I can agree some others that there was a subtle feeling of plot holes and a slimmer of dragging parts, but these were so small that they did not distract that much if at all from the overall enjoyment.

I've been watching it from start to finish with a heavy heart. All the characters are so well damn relatable and ngl, no one is at fault right there in the movie. Honestly, i cried while watching some of the scenes and it was sooooooooooo good. And yeah, right now i feel like an empty shell with the open ending. Definitely 100/10

I'm so glad I finally resumed the movie and finished ( ˊᵕˋ ) . The visuals were stunning all the way through and the soundtrack was so beautiful. Although I don't understand what it is like to be deaf, I do have a friend that is and I can't even imagine life through her point of view. Overall, I really beautiful job by Kyoto for capturing so many raw emotions and feelings that just blow you away. 8/10 for me :) <3

Your Name was my first anime ever, and a couple months later as I started to get more into anime, I went searching for all the good stuff that everyone recommends. And of course this movie came up. However, I believe my expectations were in the wrong place, as I remember coming out of this thinking: "yeah that was okay." Now, four years or so along with hundreds of anime later, I have re-watched it, and I can finally truly appreciate it for the beautiful film that it is. And so just a little communication goes a long way. It does make you think "if they'd just done this at the start then this whole ordeal could've been avoided." But life is not perfect and doesn't quite work that way, and before I get too cheesy, we wouldn't have gotten this beautifully animated film by Kyoto Animation.

A few lingering questions of mine still remain, like why did Shoko choose to commit suicide in that particular moment. Maybe it's a sensitive inquiry but honestly it kind of puzzles me that she decided it then and there other than during the peak of her time being bullied. And maybe I'm super dense but what was exactly that Nagatsuka said to Ishida in the bathroom stall that truly made him want to open up to everyone again? I guess the obvious answer is that all Ishida needed was a genuine friend by his side, but was it really as simple as that? If so, yeah I'm still fine with that.

But the one for me that really sticks out and bugs me quite a bit was Ueno's rather extreme hostility towards Nishimiya. I can get behind the idea that she hates her in general due to her arrival kind of messing everything up when it all seemed to be going smoothly. Deaf girl arrives in class, younger Ishida decides to bully her, and then it all goes to sh*t- it's Ishida's fault but Nishimiya's arrival was what started it all, and Ueno hates her for that. Okay. But... it seems like Ueno hated her on a deep, personal level. She hated her very character, but why? Is it because she was assuming things, due to Nishimiya being, well, deaf, after all? Like what exactly was she expecting out of someone who couldn't communicate with complete clarity? Actually no, it's the other way around: Nishimya clearly wrote her thoughts in her notebook, and Ueno and of course Ishida responded to her with hostility for no reason other than to bully her I guess. Maybe that's the whole point: the ones who weren't deaf were the ones who didn't listen. BUT WHAT MADE IT SO HARD TO LISTEN?? Are they, Ueno in particular, that dumb? Or is she just a dick? If one of the messages it was trying to get across is that there are some real dicks in the world, then, well I guess I have no further issues.

These are just a few nitpick-level issues I have, but none of them really take away from how good the movie was as a whole. Beautiful visuals as expected of Kyoto Animation, beautiful soundtrack, and beautiful story. Left this with a 6/10 back then, and now upon re-watch I will easily change that to a 7/10. Maybe even an 8/10 if I can personally understand it all a bit better.
