I was in an izakaya a few weeks ago and had salmon sashimi, with wasabi and soy sauce. It was 'interesting'.

Then a few days ago I had tuna sashimi (tuna is one of the big favourites of Japanese people) with and without wasabi and soy sauce and it was NASTY.

Overall I dont really get the love for raw fish, its not a taste sensation and its not filling, its just a light subtle snack thats kind of pointless to me.

I forgot that majority here aren't Asians, and was rather shocked to see the outcome of the poll. Sushi is good. Ramen is good. Rice is good. I prefer chopsticks to forks actually. Rice is our staple after all. Then what do the Westerners normally have for meals? I always wanted to know that.

I don't much like the rolls of any kind.
I just like a slab of fresh fish meat, on top of sticky short grain rice.
And then to be dipped in soy sauce and wasabi. That to me is paradise.

Rolls to me are just meh.

Ramune would be fabulous if you could buy it in American sizes instead of drinking out of this little perfume bottle type thing.

I am some crazy weeaboo Japan nut. I've never seen the problem with it no matter how much people(online) tell me it's a problem.

Also, as the for the "Japan obsessed people PRETENDING to like it" thing. There's a such thing as a placebo affect that changes how much a person can enjoy food. If a person is already excited about sushi through Japanese cultural interest or whatever reason, that person is more likely to have that food fill a person's initial excitement.

I don't think we're entirely born with taste. Even our favorite colors are somewhat decided by early experiences.

I wouldn't be a sushi eater if it wasn't for being "Japan obsessed". I had to go out of my way to try sushi for the first time. But boy was it worth it for me. I still can't do it very often because it's expensive. But it only makes me cherish the experience all the more. I mean, are you going to treasure some cd you could buy at wal*mart as much as you'd treasure a cd you had to order online?

Now I like all sorts of food from all over the world. But sushi certainly wouldn't low on my list. And it's fair to have a cultural interest in food. And it's probably a more impressive hobby to be interested in Japanese food than it is to be interested in anime.

Can't really say for sure. I've only had sushi once in China Town on our Junior Trip. It was kinda weird at first. For some reason, I had a hard time getting myself to swallow it. But after I finally got it swallowed it was pretty good tasting. Lol, I'm not really sure what kind it was but If I recall correctly my friend said it was covered in fish eggs or something like that. We spend the rest of the day joking about how we were going to crap out fish and stuff XD.

I like Anime and Manga, and I think Japan has a cool history. I would say their porn and hentai too, but the censorship laws are gay, so that ruins it. Thats the end of my fascination - I don't see why so many people obsess over everything that is done there. Some of the stuff there is just utter shit like it is everywhere else. Take sushi for example.

What the fuck is wrong with you people? California rolls are delicious. Just ate about ten of them fifteen minutes ago.

And I'm honestly surprised so few people here have tried sushi. It's not about fucking Japan or anything else. It's simply that trying out new food is always a great experience. Have so few of you also tried lasagna or burritos, for example?

Foreign food is fun; I've tried everything from paella to frog's legs to Zhaliang. It's delicious.

Never watched the second one, but Japanese live action porn is HILARIOUS. Seriously, it's the only type of porn that is actually hysterically funny.

The only downside is that in the words of my friend, "Japanese porn sounds like a cute woodland creature being tortured to death, squealing for its life."

Actually, there might need to be a topic about this.

Really? Seriously? What about it is cool? I think modern Japan is not bad, but I can't think of too much within its history that is ideal or overly exciting. Unless maybe you like oppressive social structures that produce empty and loyal worker drones and squelch dissent, or things along those lines. Maybe do you mean their traditions and such?

As for people obsessed with Japan, all I can say is that the grass is always greener. Ask anyone who's lived there for a long time and they'll probably tell you a) they wouldn't do it without frequent trips back home or b) they are miserable/tired of being the monkey gajin who does tricks and tries to speak Japanese/insert other complaints here.

I've always like sushi, long before I even got into anime.

There's a sushi bar neer my place that I've been going to forever, and I must say, next to the Partners Pizza, that sushi is my favourite food.

The store-bought stuff if usually meh, though sometimes I can find a good batch.

Old Japan was oppressive and horrid. Not that the political structure of current Japan doesn't leave something to be desired either.

Which is why I prefer the more romanticized prettied up versions of Japan's ancient past. Just like I do my own European history(yes I'm an American, even even our recent old history is pretty boring, interesting was stuff like the Viking ages, not those boring pilgrims). Europe > America. At least as far the interest of history is concerned. Imho.

Interest in history of Japan for me is concerned with the more mystical and the good elements of old Japan. I made a Shinto group after all.

And "obsessive" is a very subjective word, and most people use it in the case of Japan to mean "more interests for Japan than I have myself", such as food.

It's a matter of having tastes. If you have a cultural interest. It's a taste. It's a fucking goddamn taste. And staring and stuff about Japanese nationalism all day and experiencing some less than desirable aspects of Japan constantly, may not be enough to rewrite that taste. Just as much as Japan's problems may not be enough to make you stop from liking anime.

But apparently, people don't follow this logic. And a cultural interest it's as a subjective realm treated objectively. Just like some music is supposed to be superior to other music. Apparently we think things that have no objective truth have to be treated objectively.

Taste. Taste. It's not a grass is always greener thing. You're pinning people down to where they live. It's like liking the color green or the color blue more. And pinning down culture taste like that down on people from where they are born, and demeaning those who take interest in other cultures as having a "grass is greener" complex, or will need to "wake up and smell the whatever", is demeaning, rude, and nationalist.

A. Sushi is not just "raw fish, rice, and seaweed." There are many different kinds, including vegan sushi. >:P

B. Sushi has a very subtle flavor that is difficult to appreciate if you have been living off of an american diet, which is overloaded with sugar and salt. When you use less sugar, salt and spice, you begin to appreciate the subtle flavors of the food that up until then, you only thought you had been enjoying.

C. I enjoy sushi for its artistry. Screw the country of origin.

I strongly dislike the majority of seafood, so that rules out most sushi for me. I do quite like chicken makizushi though. I like rice and nori, so vegetable or chicken fillings work well for me, but bleh fish. Much to the dismay of my family, all who adore seafood (stereotypically I guess).

I like sushi and sashimi generally, but it's not a favourite, so vote = no. Raw tuna doesn't appeal and wasabi is pointlessly hot and flavourless, but most other things are good. Nabe, okonomiyaki, tonkatsu and yakisoba are all superior Japanese foods in my opinion.

Sushi and sashimi is fairly distinct from a lot of unfamiliar 'world food' as it's special feature is that it is raw. This is pretty crucial to how people think about it and kind of polarises opinion. Now, if the OP was about, I dunno, onigiri (bit more common in anime IMO), I expect there would be fewer people saying "never tried it and don't want to, makes me sick" and so on.

Those people need to come to terms with food generally, though. Fact: most food has something unpleasant related to it, Sushi simply makes that a feature rather than hiding it, like say mince or GM crop-derived foods. If you like fish you'll probably like sushi, if not you probably won't. The cookedness or lack thereof is not really relevant.

Sushi is indeed one of my favorite foods and has been for much much longer than I've been watching anime. It's also far from the only "foreign" food that I enjoy as I have been pretty lucky in my life and have been able to travel to a wide variety of places and try a lot of different foods. It's also nice living in a large cosmopolitan city which has great authentic restaurants for pretty much any place you can think of. Had I not been introduced to it so early I probably would never have expected anybody to like it either.

Considering that I hate fish for the most part, it probably is a little weird to some that I do enjoy Sushi as much as I do, but the majority of fish tends to have a fishy taste to me when it's cooked (though there are definitely fish meals I have enjoyed), which is something that sushi just does not have if it is prepared correctly. Sushi is also a bit of an acquired taste for some though luckily I enjoyed it immediately... I was a little hesitant when making the jump from sushi to sashimi but I far prefer some good sashimi these days.

Salmon is typically my favorite but there is not many things that I don't enjoy. California rolls are a little bland to me now but like most people who live in North America it was the first thing that I tried, though that's not to say I am hating on it just because it's north american there are some damn good rolls like dragon and dynamite which have american roots and are awesome. I haven't had the crazy expensive stuff much, but I can say that Kobe beef sashimi was part of the best meal I have ever had, and Otoro is also damn good.

There is also a noticeable difference between something like grocery store/all you can eat sushi, a decent restaurant sushi, and a great restaurant sushi. Poorly prepared unagi has made me nauseous from the taste more times than I can count now, but when it's done right it is one of my favorites. Tuna when not really fresh also has that fishy taste that I mentioned before and can ruin a whole meal for me. Regardless of where you are, poor sushi is still poor sushi.

Sushi is effing awesome. Spicy salmon ftw. Though people seem to have a big deal on California rolls, which is so-so to me. And you can't go wrong without soy sauce and wasabi. Eating it alone without them is just... bland. And can't forget raw sashimi and chicken teriyaki.

I knew that you'd be from Toronto just by your post, lol. Spicy Salmon is a staple.

sushi is good, but there's plenty of other shit thats wayyy better in Japanese cuisine. kind of rubs me the wrong way whenever I see americans only eating california rolls and chicken teriyaki and claim they "love japanese food."

honestly I like Korean and Vietnamese food better.

In all fairness to some people, they are never really given the opportunity to be exposed to things other than the chain japanese restaurant chicken teryaki and california rolls, but I do know exactly what you're getting at.

Korean and vietnamese food do have awesome stuff as well, a hot bowl of kimchi fried rice just hits the spot sometimes, and I enjoy a good bowl of Pho more than sushi.
