"We are guardians, but also a bunch of miserable wretches constantly battling danger and madness."
I knew what's coming but still. The execution of this was tip top. I may have cut onions...

I wonder if Klein's information was the trigger or the despair Old Neil felt knowing that if he had been armed with this information decades ago it might have made a difference.
I don't know, all I can say is that it was a beautiful and bittersweet send-off for a beloved character.

Another great episode, so heartbreaking. </3

Anyone know what the plate at the end was? What was written on it?

@Synesphere I think it was the charm with Chinese characters on it that Klein found when he was in the underground market with Neil, but he thought it was too expensive. Turns out Neil had bought it as a gift for Klein 😭

@joemaamah I re-watched it this morning. So he basically tried to pull an Edward Elric & use Alchemy to bring his Wife back. And THAT happened. He became a monster.

Of course this had to happen. I think everyone saw this coming but I'm still crying. Rip Old Niel you were the best. Now you can be with your wife.

I guess Dunn will keep his glasses now.

At least we can celebrate Klein reaching sequence 8 and becoming the clown. He's got precognition + other abilities, probably, and is overall just stronger. He can throw cards now. He also managed to share the info with the others so they could potentially advance faster now too.

We also see a pretty high sequence guy who's at sequence 5 of the sleepless pathway and can even fight sequence 4 demigods which is pretty crazy.

@EmilioRecore ohh you're right. It was that amulet with Roselle's "mystical sign" that Klein checked out back then at the black market and then, Old Neil shown his interest in it. I rewatched that market visit (ep. 5) and Old Neil was also asked by seller if he wants that "water from the spring of elves"... So he was "stingy" with money and even got into debt, because all those ingredients were expensive. In the meanwhile, he was drawing his own fresh blood little by little... And after he got all ingredients he wasn't stingy anymore and wanted to treat everyone to that dinner... maaaannnnn.

I think that Klein frantically sharing "acting method" with his coworkers was a tipping point for Old Neil... but he was preparing for this ritual obviously for longer time. Drawing his own blood little by little. Gathering ingredients. The result would be the same, sooner or later. But still, it would leave one thinking "if only they had more time and realized in time, maybe they could intervene in time and save the old guy". Poor Klein.

(also, Klein learning to smile through tears as a just-freshly-advanced into a clown... that was heart breaking too).

@Sheol01 You know, you make a very good point I had not considered. Makes me wonder if it's a coincidence or intended. With the rest of the steam-punky feel this has, I wonder how much else can be attributed to FMA inspiration?

You know, it's funny. I was just thinking earlier today that was probably the most devastating reveal I have seen since the Nina moment in FMA.

Every week I'm constantly amazed at the details and backgrounds in this donghua, they're practically aura farming.

Daly pre warned Klein about the acting method, so he ends up telling the whole team. That high level sequence 5 (!!!) inquisitor comes, interrogates him, passes him and then unveils a special artifact that basically lets him function as a sequence 4, AND ... he swears the entire lot to secrecy. Checkmate!

Old Neil. OMFG. No. No ... why!!! No! What a tragic end for a beloved character, and still ... the eldritch horror in Victorian Steampunk setting is something that just goes well together. Absolute Cinema + feels. Poor Dunn. This episode hurt, it's my favorite one so far.

@joemaamah There are even other similarities to FMA 2003. Their Mother only returns as a loose mass of organs ( until a homonculus later gives her one of the red stones) that sort of resembles this. Of course, I could even go back to Star Trek TOS on some of this, so we shouldn't really reach too much. After all, nothing new under the sun and all. But they did bring Alchemy into it and he WAS trying to revive the dead. Well, the comparisons are obvious even if they aren't direct. I mean most Shows would tell you this is a BAD IDEA.

Cried.

As a novel reader, I knew this episode would be rough, but damn…

So much emotional impact in the second half. The desperation, sadness, resignation, it all hits so hard. Beautiful animation, score, simply a work of art.

Also, as a novel reader, seeing Klein as a brand new clown face this moment of extreme tragedy and then SMILE when he sees old Neil bought the stamp with Roselle’s script….Uuugghh… that is perfect visual foreshadowing and storytelling right there.

Rest in Peace to the incomparable Old Man Neil — the true GOAT.
A man of effulgent character, whose sincere cordiality touched everyone around him. His ardor for life and for others was unwavering, extending generously and without judgment. Despite the sorrow of having to lay so many of his closest loved ones to rest, he carried himself with quiet strength and enduring grace.
His end is deeply tragic, but his legacy — marked by his effulgence, his ardor, and his rare cordiality — will never be forgotten.

They basically let us know EXACTLY what was coming with last week's episode and STILL made it hit so hard when they did it this week. Even if you had skipped last week's episode and/or ending, the "I'll pay for dinner" was such a a crazy huge death flag coming from Neil that you'd know what's gonna happen. And. It. Still. Hurt!
So well done!

Wow, incredible episode i remember reading this in the novel the donghua truly did it justice. we finally got to see Crestet Cesimir and man i wasnt expecting him to look like that though he still looks pretty solid and that sword he has is amazing.

Neil, what can i say except rest in peace. I honestly loved Neil and i wish they included more of his scenes witht teaching Klein in the Donghua though either way i feel most if not everyone shouldve been effected by has passing, i know for a fact i was and i already read it.

The entire scene with Dunn and him conversing, the music, the animation it was truly all perfect. I hope Dunn is doing well i cant begin to wonder what hes going through having to end his friend.

Rest in peace.

@ZeppyZap you will be surpised on how much impact a great last episode could do to the audience. And I heard episode 13 is very very great.

Conclusion matters a lot and most people will rate it 10/10 just for episode 13 alone.

So i have no doubt LOTM will crack that 9.0 score. the question is how long can it maintain that score? Probably not for long and the score will drop to 8.80 after a few months.

You know I just realized the 'Do as you wish, but do no harm' and why Old Neil lost control. You can do anything, as long as you do no harm. But if you harm yourself you're still doing harm. So when Old Neil started seriously harming himself on the one night where he took from himself that much blood, he lost control, because he harmed himself

I feel this episode. Best episode for me. the thing i liked in this episode is that this episode don't show you abuse or mistreatment, characters crying loudly, making you cry with overwhelming guilt and a loud crying. but in this episode all we see is emotion. only 2 characters cried and only a small amount without showing the whole world that I am crying. you can feel their emotions just from their faces . not by drama and loud cry.

Oh yeah they were so good with the details and the show don’t tell approach, on a second watch, I noticed Dunn’s hand and lips were slightly shaking in different scenes.

The episode was nice, i am looking forward to see small's new abilities in action. The Lovecraftian influences are very strong and i approve.

I don't understand the age thing. Neil looks in his 60's and in the flashback he and Celeste look 30, how this was "20 years ago" ? Dunn looks in his 40's, men at that age do not call 60 year olds "old". The "15 years together" do not add up tho. I am totally confused here.

This emotionally charged episode was truly beautiful. I’ve always loved Neil since episode one. He was always so kind and was Kleins’ mentor, even though his wife had passed away many years ago. Despite his grief, he remained happy and loved by everyone.
Then, the scene where his entire house was filled with blood and body parts was both beautiful and hurtful.

Seeing Neil like that at the end was so heartbreaking. I kept my eyes closed because they killed him, and there was no other choice. Everyone began to cry, and I couldn’t help but join in. He didn’t deserve this ending.

There was also a quote where he said, “If I cannot save her, then I shall accompany her.” That line was so poignant.
