Interesting little concept will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Surprised the english was decent, although I'm guessing that is the point of the show. Not sure about the mother's lines though.

Can't tell if Lily is meant to be British or Australian though, the accident kind of goes both ways.

Ok, I was attracted to this anime because I saw that the girl is speaking english rather than japanese. And as expected that created misunderstanding right away. xD

Still, I am quite surprised how good the show actually is. Setting up wholesome plotline and introducing awkward but fun characters. Animation and sound are great so far.

Will watch this for sure, as I am interested in where the story will go next.

Excellent beginning episode!

A misunderstanding started Renji and Lily's relationship. Their chemistry is so pleasant!

He pretty much rejected her in the first episode, so I don't think there will be any romantic development.

He said I can’t be lovers until I get to know you better, meaning no for now but let’s get to know each other.

God forbid a child has a one sided romance.

We’ve all been there as a child, having a crush on someone way older than us, this ain’t a romance, just cute wholesomeness

But he didn’t hard reject he just said no for now because I don’t know you, if he said let’s just be friends sure, but he’s hinting that there is still a possibility.

That was a cute and wholesome first episode. That English voice acting from Lily sounds pretty good.

Day one and people are already crying over the ages of the characters.... It's just a cartoon, so stop taking it seriously. If you hate the age gap so much, then stop talking here and don't be a killjoy for everyone else.

At least from this episode I don’t really agree with that characterization.

“I can’t be your lover because I still don’t know anything about you” is a weird thing to write to a child. Leaves it way too open.

Like there is nothing wrong with a child having a crush on an adult but the adult needs to kindly but firmly cut that off.

Maybe from this point on he takes on a more like kind adult role like a mentor or uncle type character but the characterization to me so far is weird. Like him chasing her in slow-mo while the background sparkles. Maybe I’m crazy but to me that would typically indicate a spark between them or something romantic. Maybe I just don’t watch much slice of life these days and that’s just how they represent a normal platonic relationship between an adult and child that just met these days.

I loved it, I adore it, every second was full of joy... I'm so lonely 😭

Lily is adorable, I really appreciate that she speaks fluent, true english, characters like her always have a 50/50 chance of sounding really bad lol

Reiji is cool tho, I liked him because he isn't annoying or edgy or anything, I think he handled the situation like a true chad.

Can't wait to see more, but I feel kinda sad that they didn't get the rights to use real IPs, like showing the real Street Fighter, Puyo Puyo, House of the Dead, etc. Shows like High Score Girl did have real IPs, so it's sad this one doesn't.
Sorry if my english is bad (っ˘▽˘)っ~~~

Also funny hearing these weird mixed accents lol

Also I found it funny Renji kept saying "yes". I once was asking some woman if she knew where something was I was trying to get directed to and she just kept saying "yes" to everything I said and it took me a while to realize she is a foreigner from Japan and probably doesnt understand me.

@Floelle

Most countries have some kind of Romeo and Juliet law that recognizes middle teens (13-14 and 18-17) as being in the same stage of emotional development. That’s why, in many cases, both parties can legally consent to a relationship without it being treated as a crime. In Japan, the allowed age gap is up to 5 years. So I’m not really convinced any moral or legal line is being crossed here. This anime doesn’t seem to be portraying any kind of realistic injustice either, it’s clearly harmless. From what I’ve seen, both characters are written to be equally naïve, aside from a bit of idealized romance (like holding hands), there’s not even any sign of sexual intent. So why exactly would you get disgusted about something that’s fictionally wholesome and adorable?

This anime, like "Ruri Rocks", does not disappoint the expectations I had imagined when the trailers came out. Nice and very digestible narration, good quality in the drawings and beautiful drawing style, at least I like it, because it reminds a lot of the character design of "Lucky☆Star". The same can be said for the choice of colors.

@MewsicMagic Lily's English doesn't sound like a native speaker would say those lines - any of them. They don't flow naturally or normally in any way, and every delivery is an immersion-breaker.

I get that the English sounds weird to us, but I feel like what's being missed here is they aren't speaking English for English native speakers. I'm genuinely impressed by the balancing act Sally Amaki is doing of tuning her fluent English to a kind of super clean Engrish the Japanese audience might have a fighting chance of muddling through, while making a solid attempt at a British accent at the same time.

Also genuine respect for the script writing. There are some solid British-isms in there. Sure, 'Bloody Hell' was a surprise, but could anyone ever have imagined hearing a Japanese Seiyuu say 'Fancy a Cuppa'? Charming as all hell, no matter how scuffed the delivery might sound.

It’s adorable. Idc what anyone says. This is better than the repeat isekai bs that’s been going on for the past 4 years and some drama bs romance with constant miscommunication. I love it. Funny and cute at the same time. The miscommunication here makes sense since she isn’t Japanese, so no problems here. Ima let it come out so i can binge it.

Because it’s creepy. This is an anime with the setting of the real world in modern times and in the real world a 18 year old dating a 13 year old is creepy. Japan has weird standards compared to the rest of the world so maybe it’s not weird there but it’s weird pretty much everywhere else. This was a pretty avoidable issue, just make her like 16 or something. People still might complain about the age gap but 16 and 18 is a lot less weird. Like is there an important story reason for her to be 13? Or make it very clear there is no actual romance going to happen instead of leaving it open.

I’m not talking about real world harm, I’m more asking why would anyone want to watch a “romantic comedy” between a 13 year old and 18 year old?

@Yuki_Niji This. It will never not be weird to me that one of the first things that some people think about and get triggered by is age gaps and nefarious age dynamics when watching an anime.

Like you said this is just a cute fun show about a girl with a crush which is perfectly normal and the guy already rejected her. Of all my years of watching anime I have never really associated a character's age and applied real life dynamics with the other characters they interact with. I just take it at face value... which is how it should be... its a cute romcom anime.. its not that deep. This really says more about these people than anything else when all they see and think about when watching a cute innocent anime is how a child character can be sexualized and victimized.

@TheWintendoHii exactly. It seems to be the newer weebs who associated anime with real life.

Anime is entertainment. Just turn your brain off and enjoy it. If you can’t, then anime just isn’t for you. Entertainment is meant to entertain after all.

I enjoy turn your brain off stupid, fanservice anime like Gushing over Magical Girls and Highschool of the Dead, but I would get crucified and called a pedo by modern anime fans if I said it in public.

What exactly is creepy? You’re just projecting a real-world feeling onto something that doesn’t necessarily apply within a fictional dynamic. I get that one might be wary of age-gap relationships because they can be biologically unequal and someone could get hurt if bad intentions are involved. But when a fictional work purely represents romantic idealism where negative conflicts are excluded (and if everything the author says fictionally is fictionally true), then where exactly does the moral concern arise? Isn’t it just a result of your inability to separate fiction from reality? your inability to suspend disbelief to enter into what the author is trying to express - pure love and sweetness? This is basically the same as mistrusting and refusing to accept magical creatures or world travel in fiction just because you can’t connect the fictional logic, and then complaining that the anime is "off" and "unrealistic".

setting of the real world in modern times

So what? It’s not a faithful observation of reality. There is nothing like it in real life to start with. The characters embody anime stereotypes and narrative conveniences. Ever heard of the disclaimer: “The following is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents are either the product of the author's imagination or used fictitiously.”?

Like is there an important story reason for her to be 13?

Is there an important reason why you care so much about the number now? Most of you didn’t even notice her stated age and assumed both characters were the same age (since they’re equally innocent and about the same height). Which only confirms that the number is, in effect, superficially irrelevant.

why would anyone want to watch a “romantic comedy” between a 13 year old and 18 year old?

As I said before: because it’s cute, and it’s love. Why the hell would anyone object to a wholesome aesthetic experience just because of some unnecessary, compulsive concern?
In fact, we should consider it unfortunate that we are psychologically unable to bracket our moral concerns in order to appreciate an anime for what it is: a fictional, emotional idealism.
