Wow that was such a good anime. I gave this a go because fishing has literally never been done before in an anime, and I thought I'd get a simple introspective of the hobby with some zany characters thrown in...however I got that and also a genuine tale of friendship, regret, and finding the meaning of life....

I do think it needed one more episode in the oven when it comes to Tsunehiro and his sickness. I would have loved like a flashback montage of his life, and also the resolution of his sickness/disease. However despite that, it was a great watch. Unfortunately it won't get the recognition it deserves and will be watched only by a few, but I'm glad I was a part of that minority. I'm both happy and somewhat sad about this fact. Sad, that mainstream audiences continue to only consume what's mega popular such as Dandandan because of trends and will not witness such a great story like Angler presents. However I'm happy because at the same time, those types of people can almost never appreciate the more down to earth and more true to the core stories. Tho, the few that do value it, are the ones that I'm proud to call my fellow anime fans, and I'm happy that small dedicated following can see the beauty of stories like this

A hidden gem for sure ! 8/10

My 302nd completed series chronologically.

For the record, I extended it a 6/10 rating.

I liked it, but at the same time, it felt like they just threw away the whole "MC is sick and will die in 2 years" premise.. I thought it'd be interesting how all the character dynamics + drama / suspense work with that in mind and they brought NOTHING 😭 6/10 for me, just a generic slice of life that'll be forgettable

8/10 😭😭😭 I can't imagine how hard Takaaki feel carrying that guilt for his brother's death....glad Tsunehiro make up with him in the end..a happy bittersweet ending~ the trauma flashbacks at the ending but it's relatable irl...life is cruel indeed πŸ’”

I'll admit, I keep watching because I want to find out if mc will die in the end like he suppose to, but I am actually glad he's still alive after two years.

Overall, I still enjoyed this anime, because I normally never watch anything related to fishing before.

all in all i loved the characters and character interactions a lot

hoped for more drama / hospital or what the heck was wrong with him in the first place explanations

but yeah know i know how lure fishing works, at least the gist of it :D. Since i don't go fishing i applied similar baiting logics on my cat and it works. So it must work on fishes too. Lol random side comment you can ignore. Nice edutainment series.

What a nice catch! And I'm glad he expressed his gratitude.
Very sad that the brother lost his life after a fight.
About the ending, after the credits/ED... So if the deadline has passed = He won't die?
Confused. But I liked this anime! A bit unusual, but entertaining.

This is by no means a bad anime but I feel the story would have worked better as a movie with either focusing on the drama or focusing on the fishing. Animation was somewhat weak too, and the plot progression felt awkward, like they sell you that the terminal illness of Tsunehiro would be the biggest causing of drama yet it's barely touched. The part of the debt collectors was also anticlimatic and added almost nothing to the overall story, and the last three chapters felt like "oh yeah we need to give an ending to this series".

Anyway, it sort of worked. 7/10. Recommended but still flawed.

I have been duped, I hate fishing and all those random episodes were boring, I only watched it till the end because MC was supposed to die but despite ignoring his illness for months he just goes back to his hometown for treatment and they never even mentioned what his illness was.
@Maou_heika This is typical. The girl MC in I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, they never stated exactly what her illness was. Same thing in "Your Lie in April".

So in the end he just had to switch to a better rated hospital to be miraculously cured.

It's a pity they didn't really commit to the drama side.

My goodness, this was awful.

To start, Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater was my anime of the year pick for 2020, and I gave it 8/10. Sure, 2020 was a weak year due to COVID, but Breakwater is a great SoL and is up there with my favorites. The main girl, Hina, doesn't automatically succeed. She hesitates and fails. A lot. But the show carefully crafted this in a way that doesn't break the iyashikei experience. The other 3 club members all mentor Hina in their own unique ways, with heartwarming results. By the end of the show, Hina experiences significant character growth, and enjoys being in a club that she was averse to in the beginning.

NegaPosi, takes a bold stance at the beginning with a very troubled MC. To me, this meant this had the potential to be greater than Breakwater if they crafted this narrative into a fantastic story. So he meets a bunch of hobby fishermen, and episodes 4-9 focus on one of the fishermen bonding with the MC. This didn't work well for me: I felt that none of the characters, not even Hana, had any sort of chemistry with Hiro. Hana was the halfhearted attempt at a genki girl, but there was no other depth to her. The other fishermen were complete filler and I forgot their names already. The fishing segments, while visually at a higher production than Breakwater, were less educational and informative than Breakwater. Moreover, the fishermen didn't seem to have any chemistry with each other. They all worked at the same shop, but it's a stretch as adults that they'd hang out with each other after work. Also, the shop had way too many employees for it to be believable. Contrast this with the 4 characters in Breakwater, who all bounced off each other well. Finally, the debt collectors were pathetically written.

I felt the last 2 episodes were especially insulting after the show finally woke up in ep10 to address the drama that hooked in viewers in ep1. Instead of doing anything memorable or daring, it did the most cowardly thing and just had Takaaki talk out his issues which had never been brought up earlier. And then Hiro got magically healed, thus giving a middle finger to the narrative that he had a terminal illness. So the entire narrative fell apart as Hiro's depression and terminal illness didn't matter at all. They could've replaced Hiro with a random guy who enters the shop interested about fishing, and it would've played out exactly the same. Hiro didn't learn any lessons and didn't really open up to any of the fishermen, and in the end went home to his parents.

So poor, unlikeable characters, poor fishing experiences, and a narrative betrayal. I've never been more upset at a SoL show than this one. Just watch Diary of Our Days on the Breakwater instead, which has none of these issues and is a true cozy iyashikei show about fishing.

Super happy with the way things ended, but underwhelming for sure. It did make me emotional, but it was rushed tbh it would've been nice to have another 2 episodes or at least 1 more. I don't like how he abruptly said bye to everyone and that was it. It was cool that they got over the situation pretty quickly and moved on like proper adults should do.

I feel really bad for Takaaki and how his brother passed away. I can't imagine the immense guilt he must feel on a daily basis.

Second season would be greatly appreciated, but very unlikely considering its an original.
