The show is extremely nische and it's amazing that it has garnered the popularity is currently has. You not enjoying it is not weird at all. In all fairness it should be the opposite.

The reason why people like it is because it has a very distinct style (or should I say had, SHAFT has abused the shit out of it by this point). Being distinct doesn't mean being good, so your tastes and preferences are still at play here.

There's no shame in not liking something you want to like, or think you should like. If you genuinely are getting bored, drop the show, that style isn't going anywhere, it's not like it's suddenly going to become a new show at some point. You aren't watching anime for other people, if you aren't getting SOME kind of enjoyment, even if not just potential discussions afterwards or whatever other alternative way people can enjoy shows, then it's best to just move on.

I think the problem most viewers have is with its presentation of certain elements: Dialogues, fanservice, and some questionable stuff. But if you can view past some of those questionable things and look at each individual characterization, you'll find hell more interesting.

That's not to say the presentation in the Monogatari series ain't good. It's brilliant. I think it's something you'll have to get used to. And of course, don't let the elitest LN readers--Monogatari fans--sway you any other way.

Not everyone enjoys dialogue for the sake of dialogue. It's an anime for people who like to read, spiced up with some fanservice and stylized visuals to keep the attention of the rest of the anime fans. It doesn't always work. End of story.
I probably regret this post by now.

Maybe because it's not your kind of thing (mine either). Better not to waste time watching something you are not enjoying

i dunno why people say monogatari is "niche" or whatever. it is literally tailor made for Anime Fans. the dialogue is full of anime references and inside jokes, the show is full of fanservice, Shinbou made his career cribbing amazing and popular anime directors like Oshii, Dezaki, Ikuhara and Kawajiri (and doing it well), it's got action and sakuga, it's got a harem. Shaft's MO is to make things that entertain anime fans. its popularity is not really a mystery, but you're right, they're talking about nothing. it's not really a very interesting show if you don't care for those things and don't find it funny. the only thing that might make it a bit more difficult for western fans to follow is the speed of the subtitles and the fact that some of the humor might not land depending on your familiarity with japan/anime.

I don't like it either but continued it nonetheless, just keep watching and the movies are great you might like that.

Oh really? I might soldier on then. thank you!
Soldiering ahead is not a good idea if you want to go over the entire franchise. And don't force yourself to watch it. It would just ruin the entire experience.

You pretty much said it yourself. Monogatari is "certified weeb shit" and it's definitely not for everyone, which makes it niche by default. That's what people mean. It's only mainstream within the anime community.

Monogatari is not a beginner friendly show, to start off. It's heavy in discussion, since the series (and by extension the VNs) excel in clever wordplay. On top of this, the show can be considered deep with the psychological aspect of each of its characters. It is also satire of the harem and ecchi genre. It is easily my favorite long-running series, and I watched episodes 1-3 of Bake, put it on hold for 3 years, and binged the shit out of it when I resumed it. It's just one of those shows you grow to appreciate after having more experience of the medium. If you still don't enjoy it, you probably don't like slow-burners (and by extension most slice of life). And there's nothing wrong with that.

I suppose that's a fair point. I just saw OP said something like "I guess I'm not smart enough then ;-;" or something, which, granted, could be 100% a joke, but I feel like that's the way other people might feel too, because some fans of the series seem to try to paint it as something way more esoteric or complicated than it is. I mean look at how many threads there are about "why is Monogatari popular? Monogatari is Shit! WHY DONT I LIKE MONOGATARI?" are in AD lately. It's popular with anime fans because it's literally made to appeal to anime fans. The people on these tracking sites tend to not be the MOST casual anime watchers, also so if people just say what the appeal is it's understandable. There's no need for "It's not for everyone..." like there's some secret to it. I think there's a great deal of confusion about what the appeal of the show is because nobody seems to want to come out and say plainly "it's a bunch of fanservice and jokes for weebs and it looks good." Which is part of the reason I feel like some people feel the need to voice how stupid or shitty they think the show is, too.

Because monogatari is mid and has no interesting or likable characters.

"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction" It's understandable, sometimes you even need to speak out the obvious.

And yeah, "not for everyone" can also be a roundabout way to flatter yourself say my taste is different. Pair that with the tendency of some(young and or new fans for most parts) to oversell what they like on their quest for validation; add the peer pressure and that's what this is largely all about. It's typical, especially among anime fans who define themeselves through their taste. The things precious to us can't be cheap or generic, God forbid. Apart from that you see allergic reactions to labels such as shounen and harem simply due to the negative connotation these terms are loaded with while seinen tends to enjoy great respect, lol. Pretty silly and if you ask me then it's just the typical insecurity thingies here on MAL. We'll eventually more or less grow out of the phase in which we care about the image that liking a certain anime projects and simply enjoy.

i totally feel you.

the visuals are great also the staging.

but i didn't like the characters very much, and the dialogues are very dull and boring for me. also this urban legends are not so interesting.

its just not for you, don't force yourself just because others say its a masterpiece.

drop it and move on this a show YOU enjoy.

definitely totally agree. there are things to enjoy in every corner of the medium. there are plenty of things i shamelessly enjoyed watching that i KNOW are hot trash by some metrics. it just doesn't matter lol. likewise, it's good to keep an open mind, but no one's obliged to like everything. what a person likes to watch says much less than if they can at least be amicable toward others and use their head a bit. it's nice to find likeminded people but it's also great to be able to have a good convo with someone whose interests are rather different.

every anime fan better know.. you don't get into the robot in order to acquire self worth. you get in the robot BECAUSE you have a sense of self worth 🙏

It's not as good as people say it to be. It's more like going to an art museum and looking at paintings or various art. It's very abstract and can be left a lot to the viewers interpretation even though there is a story and it's character focus.

But it's one of those I just couldn't rate because each scene resonated different and there was moments when I was utterly bored and moments I was very interested and amused. It's amusing and interesting to watch but not entirely great as a whole.

Some of the opening songs are catchy though and it's worth maybe looking up those generally good scenes on YouTube if you want to skip it and not watch it all.

If you have some trouble with the release order you may shift to chronological order, to avoid more confusion.

Do what I did and just watch it in any random order. I had more fun doing this and piecing together the series like a puzzle. The anime is kind of all over the place anyway so it doesn't really matter.
