| In a lot of animes, girls actually cute their hair off, or it gets chopped off by accident. Not sure if the artists just wanted to change the way their characters look, but in Japan the loss of your hair used to be considered an absolutely terrible thing among samurai and stuff; they used to have to cut their hair when they left their villiage, and enemies used to chop off Japanese people's hair as torture. So perhaps it symbolises a loss, a change, or self sacrifice? Maybe they don't think that deep. X'D Personally I prefer long hair on most, but there ya go. |

| I like short hair on a girl, partically if it's somewhere between bishonen pageboy (Haruka Tenoh) or shoulder length (Haruhi Suzumiya). However, it mostly depends how the hair is styled and how cute the girls face is. FYI, amongst my favourite short hairs are Haruhi Fujioka, Rei Ayanami, Yuki Nagato, Riku Harada, Nene Romanova (2040 version), Ami Mizuno, Akane Tendo and Koishi Herikawa. Though sometimes some girls look better with long hair rather than short (Perhaps Lenalee Lee is an example. Not saying she looks bad with short but I'm used to her with long.) |

| I disagree: And I thought Nia looked adorable with her short hair as well. Possibly even more so than with her hair longer. Ohh and Utena's short hair + hat combo in Adolescence Apocalypse was the hottest thing ever. Short hair is awesome both in anime and irl as well. Long hair is such a hassle to deal with after awhile (for me at least). Just a few inches below the chin is perfect. edit:I forgot to include Kino. Shame on me.  |

I think whatever looks good. I personally have long hair, but that is my personal taste. I just think it suits me better. Now I have to say if I can pull it off, I would do the short hair thing, and some girls look really cute with short hair. So I guess it all depends on the person. |

| If you notice, short hair makes a girl character look more versatile, for example is the lead in blood+, she kicks ass but still shows a girl attitude in some scenes, same goes for sporty characters. in some cases, it is used to make a character chilldish but can only be seen in a comedy anime, or in a middle school setting. As for the long hair characters, that clearly defines them as a girl so there is nothing special. Personally i like girls with long hair either 2D or 3D, XD |

Well in reality the 3D world, people have different face structures and I do agree that short hair can look great on certain girls, but overall in my opinion long hair on a girl looks so much better. But anime doesn't really have much of an option or the ability to do much with characters face structure, so to me short hair on animated characters RARELY if ever looks good, long hair makes the animated character more appealing in my opinion. |

To me no girl will ever look better then a girl with longer hair in my opinion anime or real life, not saying girls with short hair look bad, some look good but they'll ALWAYS look better with natural long hair. Short hair just seems to tomboy, and just makes me think she like girls more then guys. Just my opinion though, like many have said, it's mostly about preference. But the question is WHY do the main guy character falls for the girl with shorter hair? I swear in most animes I've seen with romance the main guy ends with the girl with shorter hair, is this short hair style more popular in Japan or Japanese anime fans? |
