Gorgeous short; the addition of Ave Maria as the BGM was a brilliant move.
Agreed! Ave Maria is beautful anyway and was used really well.

What a fantastic little short anime of a masterpiece.
It deserves an 8 at least.

Also, heck yeah Ireland!

That was impressive.
There were humourous parts in the middle of all the seriousness. They seemed to pull that off well.
:D

Yes, I would most definitely agree :)
Even if it was 10 minutes, there was an understandable plot with an eerie atmosphere, yet something that had some comedy in it. I really liked the 'weirdness' of this OVA (for lack of better words). It was well done and I loved the Swordsmen's voice ^_^

Despite having one of the shortest story ever, 8/10. Mostly because of the beautiful art work, good voice actors and a nice BGM.

Very nice. Saw it twice, kinda cried the second time.

I love all 4º C creations. A big inspiring and creative source which, unlike the rest of some shows, is not built on the basis of psychology, but art is the excuse for creating the anime here. Kigeki leaves room for a lot of interpretation at the viewer's choice.

"Ave Maria" was used splendidly and not once had failed (especialy in the very moment when the Black Swordsman is introduced on the bridge scene, let alone the story's introduction, and the ending part fit flawlessly).

It had it's mistakes (japanese always forget that europeans read from right to left, historical acuracy and how did the girl got there so fast on foot, when it takes four days on horseback plus one day walk to get to the castle ^^), but they can be overlooked.

The art combines a mature style with the little girl's memories of that time. I'm guessing that the white portrayal of the Black Swordsman is part of her memories, and how she had imagined him. Also, we shouldn't look at him as someone bad and cruel. The passion for books, the kind heart and the fact that he doesn't accept money easily nulifies them. He whispered those words to her solely that she would not tell anyone, scared of the thought of what he could do. As for the bodies, wouldn't trowing them off the bridge, into the water the only logical thing to do? (watch how the blood flows down the river from only one side of the bridge)

I am giving it a 9/10. It should have focused a bit more on his life before the girl got to him. Then it would have made his departure more missed. I didn't liked how the voice actor pronounced "I accept." Was expecting a different tone there. The first lines were said in an incredibly mysterious tone. The laghter blending with the background music will be unforgetable.

I'm wondering, would he come back, now that she had told the story? ^^
(I know he wouldn't, because he doesn't know. I just like that thought... the thought of seeing each other again.)

So, now there are several questions: was he born in times when "laughing and speaking were forbiden"? or in times after that, when all books were burnt? and finally why comedies were written in times when laughing was forbiden? Is there anyone smart enough to answer that?

Personally, I think the plot was quite easy to understand.

Pretty simple to understand.

@SoulAssassin:
You put Kigeki, something simple and sweet, into a whole new perspective.

@Arcanus:
You definitely cleared some things up~

Thank you both :)

I couldn't find a subbed one for this but I did find an English dubbed one I thought the dub was pretty good; it didn't annoy me at all. I thought they did a great job seeing as how it was only ten minutes long.

I thought he ate them! At the beginning part the swordsman said some morbid stuff... dunno if he meant those literally. But then again, would throwing the bodies away make such a big deal that it has to be a secret? The last part also showed him with his face dirty with blood. I really thought he ate them. I could be wrong ^^''

It was pretty good, but I don't really understand how people can give it anything above an 8. Personally I don't see how you can come to like something that much in just 10 minutes, but then again thats just me, so don't take this comment seriously or anything.

However, overall this was a nice anime with good VCs, BGM (Schubert owns =D) and art style really fit well with the anime. Reading arcanus' post also helped alot. The story makes much more sense now =).

8/10 from me.

Great short. I really liked the story, I wouldn't have figured out the swordsman was referring to the fact that he smiled when he told the little girl not to tell anyone, and not to the dead bodies of the soldiers he killed, if someone hadn't mentioned it here.

I think the Black Swordsman was inhuman, maybe a vampire? Since he was from such a time, that was a loong time ago xD

I dunno but this story reminded me of the legend of Dracula.

Best short I've seen in a while. Love that it has a gothic atmosphere like a Grimm's fairytale or fantasy. Wished there were more anime in this category. I also wished there was more time to develop the Black Swordsman and/or his relationship with the girl.

The atmosphere alone makes this a lovely watch.

The haunting gothic opera playing in the background with the dark and slightly offbeat art style combined with the girls voice make it just incredibly pleasing to the senses.

Undoubtedly a brilliant short. Purely atmospheric, as Studio 4ºC’s works always are, unique and haunting, dark and engaging. The animation was very well executed, black and white plus grey undertones for the whole setting, creating a gloomy aura. Religious gospel music to get along, setting flawlessly the mood and leaving you mesmerized.

Comedy.
Because it was what he sought.
Comedy.
In the end it he found it out.

Indeed, it is memorable.
