Easy.
With a proper I.Q test you are given up to 3 hours or more to complete it. It's been 6 years since i took it but i think there is about 150-250 questions. I do remember finishing with an hour and a half to spare.

Can you please give me the soln to 39?

Maybe it's H. That's my expert opinion.™

Edit: Never mind. I completely misunderstood it.

I think I'm making progress on 39.

In every 3×3 grid, note that there is always exactly 1 column which contains all 3 shapes (i.e. a triangle, circle, square). If you take a look at the position of that column in each of the grids you will notice a pattern that emerges.

Other than that, I'm lost :S

Also found this:

Any ideas?
This one is pretty simple.

Let's label each 3x3 grid: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

So, pick the first column of 3x3 grids (grids 1, 4 and 7). Let's suppose you picked the 3x3 grid number 4. Now, pick any square on the grid. Let's suppose you picked the 7th square. Now, go to the next 3x3 grid (number 5), and check the 8th square. You will see that it is a different shape. Now, check the next 3x3 grid (number 6), and the next position on the grid (the 9th square), you will see that the shape is the one that is left.

You just need to apply that for every single space on the last grid.

The law row should be all X. The second row: Triangle, triangle, circle

The first row: Triangle, circle, cricle

Correct alternative: B

I got 39 wrong because I was running out of time, and I thought I only saw pairs of shapes that didn't have all 3 touching each other. But now I see the last pattern with 3 X's so I probably got it wrong as I chose F.

That logic doesn't work with every row though. Like, if we picked 3x3 grid number 7, the changes to the third row wouldn't lead to the same conclusions with the answer. There wouldn't be the first shape "left" in square 9.

The logic also doesn't work with 3x3 grid number 1, with the changes to the bottom row of it.

You still got the answer right, so I'm probably missing something. The only thing I noticed in that question was the the end on a row of 3x3 grids would start with the last one tilted to the right. That doesn't help find the conclusion, however, since there is no forth row of grids.

126, but is this really worth a damn? If anything I'd place myself below average.

Edit: People really should stop talking about the answers, or it makes the test invalid. Even if it's an inaccurate tool of measuring intelligence in the first place.

I wasnt focusing real hard and let my mind make subconscious answers for ones i got stuck on. I just made the time with seconds to spare since some of the later ones had me stuck. Also was talking to someone part way through.

Years ago i took a real iq test (although not done by psychologist it was a school assessed one) and got a similar score but your iq goes up as you get older so my real iq may be around 120

I did this Mensa Denmark test sometime early last year. If I remember correctly, I scored somewhere between 128 to 134 - which actually corresponds quite nicely with the 129/131 score I got on the official Mensa examination two years back. The latest IQ test I did was in in May, last year. The Fiqure IQ test it was called, and it was created by a guy called Nickolas Soulio who is rumored to have gotten an extremely high score on the renowned WAIS-IV IQ test.

But it's not healthy to get wrapped-up on a high score from one of these tests - or a high IQ score at all, for that matter. These online tests are not designed comprehensively or professionally, so when it gives you an intelligence quotient, low or high, that can mislead some people into using that as a basis for their intellectual intelligence. What's important also, I feel, is to recognise other forms of intelligent behaviour in people aside from intellectual intelligence. IQ tests are a huge basis for elitism, and that's why Mensa is so cringe-worthy to lots of people.

But good thread so far. MAL reacted quite well to this topic, and everyone seems to be having a bit of fun solving the puzzles and sharing their experiences!

Meh, IQs are worthless.

I'm studying engineering in University, and I'm pretty good at the piano. Not a lot of people can improvise on the spot+ memorize 50+pages worth of music+45+mins pieces. When I was a kid I got a below average score for my IQ test, and a year later I was one of the finalists for a youth competition for music.

I think I finally understand the solution for 39. For anyone still lingering/wondering about it, I hope this explanation might help:

Look at the top left grid. See that leftmost column that forms cross-triangle-cross? This column shifts one column to the right in the top centre grid, and also changes shapes to circle-cross-circle, and then shifts columns once more in top right and becomes triangle-circle-triangle. If you look at the other columns in all the rows, you'll see that all the columns shift space and change shape in this similar manner, with cross always becoming a circle, a triangle always becoming a cross, and a circle always becoming a triangle. This makes it suddenly easy to find bottom right, which must be 'B', because that is the only option that will allow bottom middle to shift columns/change shapes without violating the rule set.

Note: This post was more to clarify my own understanding than anything else.

Every configuration can potentially have infinite patterns to them, that's why it's important to use the simplest pattern that fits the most shapes. That line of reasoning ignores the whole middle column and requires you to guess the "theoretical" configuration under the 7th configuration (i.e. 10th configuration). If anything, the 9th box would more likely be the first box rotated counter-clockwise by 90 degrees if your pattern is true rather than an imaginary 10th box.

Lupa's explanation is the same one I got, which applies to all 9 boxes without needing some kind of special reasoning that requires evidence in the option choices rather than the question.

But I was so smart... There's no pattern that fit the first grid, so that was my best bet. I honestly didn't understand Lupadim's explanation, and my understanding that I got from it doesn't work to solve it all (likely my mistake somewhere).

But how did you get over 145? I'm a mensa now, but you're god-mode. That ain't cool mayn

I scored 118, but I only spent 7 minutes on it so I could probably have gotten a better result if I put my mind to it. I've taken mandatory IQ tests before, but I've never bothered checking out the results; I have a hard time taking them seriously. I don't believe that intelligence can be measured by a test, seeing as there are different types of intelligence. Most of the IQ tests I've encountered tend to rely heavily on abstract reasoning skills, and I don't think understanding patterns and toying around with figures necessarily means that you're a genius. I think that a good measure of high intelligence could be to be able to reflect on complex concepts, and be capable of ideating and defining them, as well as having the imagination to toy around with them. Even this is biased, of course.

I've browsed the thread, and I also find it curious how the majority of casual discussion members scored so high. Maybe this is a home for intellectuals after all.

I'm probably taking this too seriously.

Look at the first row, let's assume X = 1, triangle = 2, O = 3.
First shape:
1 2 3
2 3 2
1 1 3

Second shape:
2 3 1
2 1 2
1 3 3

If you take the first shape and displace 1 to the right you get:
3 1 2
3 2 3
2 1 1

I lost you here. Displace the 1's to the right, that makes sense, but why is the bottom right "3" on first shape now "2" on bottom left of displaced? Same with the left and right "2's" and "3's" on middle row.

Well a test question that can't be answered without looking at the options is by default an invalid question. If that piece of information that you found in the answers is so important to the solution, a valid question will put that information in the question section.

You never know the motives behind a test. The author could know something we don't. I may be onto something huge here, just gotta decrypt the codes...
