I can understand that the girl survived, but why did her brother? Wasn't he tied up and left as food for a shiki earlier on? I'm guessing Natsuno saved him right before he got killed.

But yeah, I thought this was a great anime. To me this is much, much better than Higurashi was. It started out slowly as a horror-mystery, became bleak as hell during the middle episodes, and then it completely turned around for the last five or so episodes with the shiki all being murdered. I'm really glad it ended that way instead of the village just being wiped out by them or something. It's not really a happy ending, but at the very least I'm glad Ozaki survived. He was the best part of the show to me.

Glad I watched this. It wasn't perfect of course, but as far as horror anime goes, it's right behind Monster.

What people dont seem to understand is that the shiki had just as much a right to live as the humans did. Their method of survival was gruesome but it isn't like they had much of a choice in the matter once they were turned.

I felt a lot of sympathy for Sunako and I was glad she ended up making it out alive.

Great series, though I didn't like the ending in that Sunako and that damn priest survived. They dragged out her scene with Ookawa way too long, I just knew he was gonna get screwed somehow. It still doesn't detract from the overall work. I'm let this final episode bake before I make a final score, but I definitely don't feel as though I wasted my time.

Hmm,

I somehow feel a bit puzzled about what the authors wanted to deliver. There was such an excellent build up as well as character development that when I saw the ending I thought that it was not an ending at all.

I do enjoy open endings but somehow it was inconclusive. I have the feeling that sadly many of the best characters were either killed or didn't survive. Well 3 out my favourite 4 characters survived.

In one phrase it was a great series with a weak ending. It could have been a 10 but now it seems to only be 8/7.

Heh. I liked the anime overall. I actually wished more of those brute, violent humans died as well but nevermind.

I'm actually glad Sunako and Muroi was alive. I feel a little sympathy for them even though the Shiki's are the root of all this. 8/10

Disappointed that Sunako and Muroi didn't die, but I hated that smug Tatsumi the most, so at least his fate was somewhat satisfying. Enjoyed this anime to a great extent, the mystery aspect to it, Ozaki and Natsuno were great protagonists as well, not to mention that whole, is it a sin if I kill because it is my survival that depends on it? debate. I'm giving this a 10/10 one of the best anime I've seen that is for sure. Too bad it's over.

- So they finally show Kaori & Akira.
- I liked Megumi but I figured that she'd have to die.
- It looks like I'm the only one who thought that Sunako & Seishin should die.
- Natsuno. :((
- I still don't think the humans went too far. They were fighting for their survival.
- Overall, I'm really glad that I watched this.

Commenting not just about the last episode but the outcome of the entire series: What a cruel bloodbath! I don't know if y'all noticed but the series didn't a draw a line between good and evil. Both sides killed in order to survive and little did it matter in the end about who drew the first blood, because both sides lost it and each in their respective turn of having the odds favoring them, they became excessively cruel against the other.

Clearly the shiki retained their human emotions, and many of them were forced to kill because they were overwhelmed by their hunger and their fear. Many were guilt-ridden about it but that's about it too but it takes a lot of willpower to overcome the starvation and the fear that you will be rejected by their kin, should you not live by their codes.

When the tides turned against them, they begged for mercy, naturally so. But humans on a power trip and their agony for survival, their fear of the unknown and hatred for the stranger, are the worst sort of monster. Sure you could say, that humans just tried to survive and exact revenge for their fallen; but shiki also were just trying to survive, and it seems that many humans were enjoying killing the shiki, even the women were singing while burying their bodies as if they were doing their daily routines.

There were two major questions that the "anime" asked. One directed towards its characters: Is it ok to kill to survive? In which, its various characters reached different conclusions, yes or no for different reasons. And one directed at us, the viewers: Who is the real monster? Men or the shiki? My conclusion is both.
Signature? I ain't got no signature! I don't need no signature! I don't have to show you any stinkin' signature!

this series, for me, is just pure awesomeness!!
First off, i really don't like vampire animes... don't know why. But this anime just blew it for me. From being mystriuous, then to muderous derpessing times, then to more bloody deaths.
for me, i think that bearded dude said everything right.I just never liked sunako, i think that she realised at the end that she was supposed to die.
Overall, i loved this series, but the ending just left too many questions!!! >.<
last thing i have to say. Ozaki is epic!!! xD

This ending had way too many unanswered questions. This series started off well enough, effectively spooking me out by the 4th episode, but as I watched further it was clear that the ending that was intended was a bloodbath of the shiki, so it slowly turned out to have none of the greatness of the starting episodes, with just pure brutal gory starting from the moment ozaki dissected his wife.

Although I have to say, Ozaki was amazing.. Although I was half expecting the bitten people who have not died to shoot Ozaki at the end when they were fleeing the village, since they were already given the order to shoot him

I just came back to this after waiting months for the Specials -_-

This was one of my favorite animes ever. The plot flowed amazingly and there was the perfect amount of thrill and suspense.

For the final episodes, it felt a little bit rushed, but maybe it was just because of the mass hysteria of the village. I finally started liking Megumi, then she's killed. I felt bad for her anyway

I'm sad that this is over, but at the same time, I think a second season would ruin it.

just watched this one the entire day today...So many thoughts:

-Sunako should have died, the only conclusion I can pull from the ending is that she will attempt to rebuild a colony somewhere, or farm off the priest exclusively.

-Shikis should not be allowed to kill to survive, just as people with defective organs should not be allowed to cannibalize other humans for organs. The list of people waiting for organs is many miles long, and many will die waiting on the list...Shikis retain their "humanity", so they'd still be cannibalizing

-It was nice that Ri-chan(green haired nurse) and natsuno's friend managed to get a "nice" ending together

-When the liquor boss decided to bundle off the controlled humans with the shiki, it was a sign the humans had gone too far.

-Favorite characters, would be a tie between natsuno and the red haired kid, cause he's the only one who reacted rationally

-Masao's vicious cycle of getting lack of attention/hate and acting hostile in return until his (2) death(s) was tugging the tears out of me. Its sad he never tried to be nice.

-Old red hairded lady was also itching to watch as she tries to convince the village...

-Tatsuno: for me, he's that guy that always pops up at the wrong moment in the game, making you curse "notto dis shittu agen".

0_0 That anime was intense. At first I went through eps 1-17 hating the Shiki, but then that hate turned towards the villagers. The change of "villians" was one of the biggest reasons why I like Shiki. However, I did not like Yukki one bit.

nop u'r sooo wrong.. its true that they still had feelings and memory after they died.. but still they were cold unbreathing DEAD meat walking around and taking life just in order to keep their damn corpses creeping around for a while longer

and what if they turn all the villagers into shiki? they wont have food anymore and will die anyway or move to another town and keep on the serial killling and ur calling it a right to live? when their thirst to kill is just a natural instinct

what i believe is that the maddness and the mass murder scenes that made the humans look bad weren't ment to make u feel sorry for the shiki but only to make u realise the hell they live in because the only way to survive is to kill.. and in this case the situation was the same for the survivors from the village.. it was = kill the zomby or get killed .. eaten.. etc.

... what i hated the most is that damn monk ... if he wanted to be dead so badly he could just suicide once again and just diaf instead of killing pplz and turning into shiki
and even when Sunako had nothing left and decided to give up all the suffering and die already he probably made her keep going >.> damn
and the little demon that lived for centurys killed thousands or hundreds and caused a massacre in the village with her idea of spreading the shiki ... what can i say a little demon hiding behind the mask of an innocent girl

Ending was alright and this anime was pretty good overall. I hated this anime at the beginning because of the art style and the boring first episode, but it turned out well. Glad I stuck around.

Although, I wish Sunako and Seishin died since they might start this crap all over again. Sunako has lived for a long time already and needs to be taken down.

I hope there's some specials since some things are missing. Like Akira surviving and stuff.

This was a great anime. The story, characters, music and whatnot were all great. I like animes that delve into deep subjects like that. I give the creators thumbs up for successfully showing how humans easily become monsters once they face their despair. Even though I hated Megumi, I just couldn't help but feel sorry for her. She had to die, but the way she did was just plain cruel and demonstrates that humans are monsters of their own kind as well.

Overall, 9/10. Would've been 10/10 if it didn't take that long to reach it's climax.

These last few episodes saved this series from being a waste of time.

I've to agree ^^
Until the 14 episode, I was like:
"Meeh, can something happen already..?"

But after episode 14 I was caught! And I'm damn glad I continued watching! I'm still rather new to the anime and manga world, so I haven't seen much like this before (Elfen Lied and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni might be comparable), but damn... This was freaking amazing!

But why did the big old man have to die, Ookowa or what his name is, he was freaking awesome! Sure, had some defects, but still awesome!

And one more thing:
Am I the only one who doesn’t want a second season? I mean... I loved the ending; it's a bit of a cliff-hanger, but still... I like to draw my own conclusions and etc. and how would they continue without screwing it up? Should Muroi try to build his own army or what..? It wouldn't make any sense to me...

Edit

The grey morality in this is what kept me interested ^^
Reminds me of the game "The Witcher" and I just freaking love it!

Anyway, for the TL;DR:
I loved this.

This show was great! I would've given it 9/10 if it wasn't for some very distracting over-the-top hairstyles (like "Ricchan's") that made it so much harder to take the series seriously. Therefore, it "only" gets 8/10 from me.

Humans vs Shiki I was on neither side, my emotions were somewhat along the lines of "This is just too much." I felt sorry for the Shiki by the end but didn't understand why Sunako (creepy girl vampire) didn't die along with all the other vampires.

I'm not quite sure why everyone highly rated the end of this anime as something amazing. There are so many things left unfinished that it really makes this anime quite disappointing for me.

For example:
~ Who started the fire?
~ Who killed Ritsuko (nurse) and Tohru (Natsuno's best friend) + why didn't we get to see them die? All of the other main characters were shown dying/escaping. These two characters were in my eyes part of the main characters.
~ What happened to Itou (Crazy shrine lady)?
~ Why did Muroi (Monk) decide to side with the Shiki?
~ Why is Akira (Brother of Megumi's best friend) alive? How the heck did he survive?
~ Why wasn't there a scene to explain Yuuki's (father of Natsuno) change of heart?
~ Why did Muroi have red eyes at the end in the chapel?

So much left unanswered D: I think if the story was completely summed up I would be able to give Shiki a very high rating, due to all of my confusion as of now I feel I should leave rating this anime like the creators have left me wondering. One question if someone would like to answer:

Does the manga sum everything I've asked above?

This was in the special: ep21.5. It was Maeda Motoko, the blue haired woman.

I think it didn't really matter. Ritsuko didn't want to live on as a shiki, so I think she didn't really fight against the attackers. Also their faces are at peace, so I think they didn't fight or something. The other shikis faces were screaming at death.

At the end of ep11 you can see she's being lured by the shiki to a house. So they must have killed her.
100audrey said:

I don't really know the answer to this one. Maybe you can look around the time Muroi visits Toshio at the clinic's basement. He didn't help Toshio, and chose to side with the shiki later.
100audrey said:
~ Why is Akira (Brother of Megumi's best friend) alive? How the heck did he survive?

He was likely rescued by Natsuno. Ep18: When Tatsumi visits Natsuno at his house, he talks about where Akira could be, he didn't see him. Natsuno answers: "Beats me."
100audrey said:

You mean after he went mad because of Natsuno's death? Or at the end, when he seems calm after getting on the bus?

He turned into a werewolf (jinroh) I think. Or at least a shiki.

Great ending, not excellent as they left some plotholes like above demonstrated. So much naiveness. While I do think Megumi's demise was over-the-top but she remained arrogant and delusional. Her eyes were only on Natsuno which I can understand but treated all the people like dirt. Feeling sorry for Megumi means that some people don't feel any sympathy for Kaori going through the torment having her parents killed slowly.

Another thing I wonder if Sunako was an old lady like that old crazy shrine lady, would people have as much sympathy as for her now? Just to show how shallow some are.

Props to Muroi for killing that retarded f**k.

Seriously Megumi was killed too brutally. Natsuno was gay, i liked him before but now he pretends to be the good guy, he's the one who started all of this slaughter Q_Q.

And the villagers escaped T_T ah well, and what kind of epilogue was that?!..sigh.

Great series.
Toshio is the man. He's the best character in this show.
It's a shame that Muroi alive till the end.
I really hate Muroi 'cause in the real world., that kind of character always screws things up and harms people who's working with him.
And I really don't understasnd "shikies are monsters, but humans are no different" BS. Humans just did what they had to do.
Are humans equally bad as shiki even though Just one shiki or a jinro could destroy the whole world? Humans can live without killing shikies, but shikies can't live without killing humans, then who are the villains?
If there has to be one shiki or a jinro who doesn't deserve death, it should be Natsuno.
(But in the end, he has to die, though)

This series would have gotten a perfect 10 to me but somehow the last few episode aren't that impressive. I have expected a more "EPIC" ending. I liked the series because of the suspense and the mystery in it. Somehow by the end it focused on the drama. well that's just me. And I have expected that Natsuno's plans would be revealed in a more "extravagant" way (more like when lelouch reveals his plans lol) Either way it was a great series although not an epic one like what others say.

i'll give it an 8 or 8.5?

Natsuno is so epic and badass!!!!!!!!!!!

So the Sunako bitch gets to live!
She's the one who started it all, tore families apart and killed an entire village and the bitch gets to escape without a scratch with that retarded gay monk.
Wheres the justice?
Seriously theres not a single charecter in all the animes I've seenthat i hate more than these too.

And Natsuno,God why does Natsuno have to die for killing that Tatsumi bastard.
Seriously he and Toshio were the only sane people in the entire series.
I feet so sorry for him.
His life's jus so...I can't explain...its jus unfair.
I jus feel sad when I see him.

I completly agree with him that shikis need to be annilated.
They are selfish, wicked and only care about themselves.

What about the families they've destroyed, the children who've died to never rise up?
They say they do that for survival, but most of them hav had more than their fair share of living.
They've already lived once, so y don't they let others do the same.

If Ritsuko could do it, why can't that Sunako bitch?

And I must say Ritsuko really really earned my respect by what she it.
It really was a most difficult and admirable decision to make.
And she stuck with it till the end.

Anyway I'm happy that atleast Toshio managed to survive.
Kaori and Akira too.

Winners and Victims stand alone!!

Alot of hate for Sunako. I can understand the hate, but i dont think many people got the idea of the anime if they really wanted all the Shiki to die.

Anyway I actually enjoyed the ending, and especially the latter stages of the anime. It made the Shiki more humane than the humans themselves (killing those shrine people even though they were human?) I love the premesis of the show but it took a while to get going.

Toshio is okay as the lead for what it was worth, but the main star was Sunako. ALSO IM GLAD THAT OLD FART THAT TRIED TO KILL SUNAKO GET SLASHED!

Disappointed. Murou ended up running away with Sunako. Bah. The Shiki are a species doomed to extinction. Even if everyone became Shiki, they wouldn't have any humans left to feed on, and they'd die. Apart from it, it was epic. The Old Man should have been the one to finish things. He was gar to the end.

Overall the series was fantastic so I'm pretty disappointed with how terrible an ending this was. Really not liking this episode. Why? Spent too much time trying to ham it up. Way too much time. Could seriously have done without things like Sunako's shoe flying into the air.

Also not happy that after all that Sunako and Muroi are still alive. Give me a break.

As for Megumi death, whatever. It was brutal and it's probably supposed to invoke some kind of sympathy for her but I have a hard time caring about someone who took delight in killing people. Burn in hell, bitch.

One last thing. The point some people want to make about the Shiki not having a choice when it comes to killing. I call bullshit on that. They did have a choice, killing people was a choice they made. The only thing they ever needed to do was feed not kill.

I'm also kind of disappointed about the ending. I had hoped for a bigger fight between Natsuno and the other werewolf, but it was awesome when he took out the little surprise...jejeje

I'm also disappointed about Muroi becoming a werewolf and he & Sunako being able to get away...

They didn't have to kill them, they did it because they wanted to make a Shiki village. That was the main reason for Sunako moving to the village.

This series was boring at first but I ended up loving it...until the very end.

Muroi deserved to die. Not only did he annoy me but he was a huge hypocrite. He save's Sunako ( someone who's been dead ) but let's those with actual lives die. He even says that no matter what noble cause, killing is wrong. Not only does he go against his word but joins the enemy side. I hate characters like him.

Sunako deserved to die. Not out of hatred but because of empathy. She's lived for so long and suffered so much. She needs to rest.

Megumi should've at least died by Natsuno's hands. She's such a tragic character. never fulfilling her dream along with her unrequited love. She was discriminated when living and died before she had a chance to live out her dreams.Either way I loved her character.

Some parts were rushed. I wanted to see the fight scenes involving Natsuno. But all we saw was him grabbing Tatsumi's hip. Didn't even see him fight against Seishiru. I wanted to see some bullet dodging matrix action. Natsuno needed more screen time.

I loved Toshio. Sacrificing his own wife to save a horde of people. Talk about being a doctor. The relationship between him and his wife weren't ideal anyways.

Tohru deserved to be killed by Natsuno. It wasn't fair for Ritsuko to die along by his side. If anything she should've died/killed by Toshio out of mercy. The relationship b/w Tohru and Natsuno's friendship is more justified than a mere crush on Ritsu. I hated his character anyway. Another damn hypocrite.

Either way 8/10. At first it was a 9.5 but the ending with the survival of Hypocite Muroi just toned it way down. Sunako's survival is just too depressing. Still an awesome series.

Man, it's been forever since I've seen a vampire story as good as that. Maybe could have used an epilogue to tie up all the plot threads, but oh well.

The final three or four episodes:

Edit-
OMG. I am so speechless. Sunako & Muroi-san are most likely dead. I didn't care about Muroi-san, but Sunako was a favorite of mine.
Then there's Megumi. I know that a lot of people don't like her, and are happy about her death, but I did. I think she helped make the show more interesting. And then she said: "You guys are the ones who're strange!" right before she died, and I was thinking about how true that was.
The only time I cried in the whole episode was when Natsuno died. Although we didn't see it happen, there's no way the two of them could've gotten out of that situation. He was such a good character.
Someone I wish that did die was Toshio. He went way too far. End of story.

In all, I started the series hating the Shiki, and hoping that Toshio would defeat them. But seeing as how the village dealed with the situation, and eventually grew too harsh, I gradually switched to rooting for some shiki to survive. I'm glad the village burned down in the end.

Also, can ANYONE please help me understand two things.
1- Who was in the blue car at the end, and what was in the box? Was that Muroi & Sunako? :o (JUST REWATCHED, and I'm confirming that it was Muroi driving. The person had glasses and the same eyes as him.)
2- Who got on the bus during the credits that the two kids (forgot their name) were surprised to see?

Does this mean a sequel? Because although the people in the car might be who I said, I have never seen the two people on the bus..

(Woah, I just realized how much I wrote, sorry).

No sequel. and and to ur first question, Yes, if you watch the anime closer you see that Muroi puts her in a box when he hid her from the people that were pursuing him, and as to who got on the bus that was Natsuno's dad, just looking alot better, and the woman he was with was just a girlfriend i suppose since his wife left him.

I greatly advice people who didnt understand the end [Muroi and Sunako DID live] to read the manga to see it clearly, because the end of the manga is the same but much more clear. In the end of the manga Muroi becomes like a second Tatsumi wearing fashionable clothes and with broad shoulders. See it here:

Also many questioned how Kaori was saved and went to the hospital. It was not Akira who saved her: both were saved by Natsuno. It is clearly showed in the manga that Natsuno was guarding Kaori, and its the first time we actually see Natsuno´s red shiki eye is when he goes to save Kaori who is in a berserk mode. this was removed from the anime, sadly.

Best psychological, slowed pace to fast-crazy-lunatic pace, vampire anime I seen apart from the action filled Hellsing. The non-linear timeline wasn't that hard to perceived, and the implied incident of akira saved, kaora sent to hospital...geez put some attention into this people! I find the anime a good potrayal of gray morality or moral relativity. There's no over-focused characters, everyone got their screentime although they may no be equal, but still enough to tell their stories. Watch the Shiki Special which beautifully explains the fate of nao/blue wife, and the cause of the fire.

We get to sympathize with both humans and vamps - given we view it objectively, it's nothing personal or moral or religious, vamp hunts humans and so humans will defend and hunt them back. If vamps are limited to a few, then we won't have this kind of opposing relationship. So..personally, the Shikis bough this on themselves when Sunako got greedy and wanted a whole village for herself. Action and reaction - she could have be content with what she had.

There's no other anime that made me respect 'anime' humans such as this, yeah they were sceptical first, some though of supernatural others thought rationally, all these are SO VERY RATIONAL things that people do in real life...and when presented with cold hard truth, only few ran - not from reality but fear of killing their own loved ones. The rest went on a purge with both men and women, young and old, with stakes and guns and machines, all working together.

The only pissy thing is the sold-out monk who refuses to do anything, even siding with the enemy. Geez go live your immortal, soul-decaying life.

In reality the manga is not canon. It is the novel. The manga did not follow its entirely. In fact characters that should not have lived, llived in the manga.

muroi and sunako should've died

natsuo's death was so anti-climatic. after all his build-up early on, he finally comes back to do very little until he buries himself with tatsumi. i had so much higher expectations for him as a protagonist

megumi's death was sad. she was pretty bitchy early on, but she did not deserve to die that way

the ending itself was somewhat very anti-climatic altogether, nobody wins, nothing happens, and it ends on a bus

the show was still really good overall, especially the vampire hunt episodes.

very high 8/10

Do note: in the light novel, natsuo is not a protagonist at all. The anime (and maybe manga?) adaptation gave him this role of their own volition (imo: it helped more people get into the series, especially BL fangirls with natsu x the blonde haired kid who cries too much).
^Not saying it ruined everything, but simply that natsuo wasn't written as a protagonist; instead of inventing more scenes with him they decided, during the second half, to stick to the main light novel's developments. I haven't read it but that seems explanatory.

Anyway,
Good anime, 7/10. +1 because there aren't enough studios for the last decennial who tackle horror plots even though there's so much moe already (and there are countless horror manga/VN/light novels that could work well as full-length anime series or at least OVAs; money is more frightening than horror anime I guess), thus 8/10 final score. The lack of suspensful horror was the major disappointment after the end of episode 4 which made me expect more of that style, tsk. Guro/blood =/= horror (this is in my pov btw, desensitized many years ago), when will people understand? The only horror here were the facts (and not 'ideas', these have been proven in history already anyway and have simply been adapted/romanticized to fit with the story in a different situation; simply study human psychology/history and that'll suffice to understand as to why they are facts) that concepts such as morality/self-righteousness/self-beliefs could bring or transform you (as in 'human', not you whoever is bothering to read this) so much. Thus it's only horror to watchers who should aspire to learn more or decide to skip out on such topics entirely, instead of being horror as in: something that gets your heart beating faster and putting you at the edge of your seat thinking "man I want to stop watching this before I get a heart attack" ;A; Thus psychological is exceedingly dominant to the horror genre/tag imo.

But enough of that side-rant, that's just a big disappointment I had after episode 4's end and had kept to myself until the end where I really had to accept the fact there was nothing of what I had hoped for in the suspense domain! I guess the end of episode 8, with the freaky yellow-hat ventriloquist loli is worth mentioning, too bad that character had NO IMPACT AT ALL afterwards. As in, besides seeing her in Shiki group shots, she was never used for any sort of development besides getting killed at the end. Lol'd.

[Starting here, I ended up tackling the entire anime (and not simply horror) and was half-way through explaining/arguing about the good/bad aspects, but it was already longer than a simple review so I figured no one would read and didn't bother finishing & deleted what was typed. I get inspired to write a lot in general when there's a lot of things to say. And this is already too long for most people, nay? (ofc you'll disagree personally if you've gotten to this line.]
^Biggest part I wanted to keep though: I love this type of scenario; the 'werewolf in a village' game where such chain-reactions can occur.
And some nostalgic-shots:

The overall ending was just lol, too bad it was sort of an 'easy' end that also tried to please most people (siding with main characters + letting the viewer decide on his own what they'd have liked more as an outcome). Come on, the characters which were forced to be appreciated the most (as in, most important: purple hair, doctor, monk: all end up as werewolves? Afaik a werewolf biting someone =/= werewolf 100% of the time, otherwise pinkhair-cityaddict girl would have been one too (they mentioned that bluenekohair-werewolf bit her). This is a too easy and predictable outcome, have some guts if you're a writer please, why not go down some more dangerous but challenging routes/directions and still make sense? That's how things progress, not by doing the same as always! Otherwise the viewer, whoever it might be, might not be interested in pursuing such topics more. Doing something better and originally helps developing genres, and it's so very needed in anime horror, even in 2012 (manga and litterature have still faired well this century, along with less than 10 real movie titles from the top of my head (not including, obviously, the titles I'll soon be mentioning). I say anime horror because I've pretty much given up with hollywood or movies in general. Most of them have to use extremely shocking topics to work as horror (human centipede, a serbian film (2010), etc) because it's unnatural (in the respected/outspoken norm) not to be, atleast slightly, disturbed by the topics (or, mainly to most of humanity, simply the visuals although many curious souls might have already seen the basis of these thanks to internet) themselves (-> these two movies for example target specifically science's advance for the first, or human morality and perversion in the latter; those are the biggest/most noticeable aspects evidently, let's not spoil it as the ideas are still interesting and quite up-to-date for the genre if done well) even if the movie itself can end up as exaggerated as these were to get the point across -> the majority of the audience ends up more shocked/disgusted than scared.
</end major rant #2>
Yes, I don't care about the names of the character much, it's not very important here. Shimizu maybe because shi is often associated with death, same for other name parts here and there in the series, but that's not worth my time.

Anyway n2, Def worth a watch, the hospital dissecting-your-vampire-wife scene might be one of my personal favorites because it was so well done haha, = 7/10, but as I said before: 8/10 because it's a show that aimed to be different and still did well (compared to other 'horror' titles that made me face-palm from start to end).

Again, I apologize for length of post, and I've only tackled the manner of horror for the show. I'm glad I didn't end up writing pages on the show itself, because there is a lot behind it that can be studied in various ways (either as to what people expect of horror nowadays, I doubt I fit in that group for example; or as to what it can be compared to in other medias, how can the theme of "werewolf in a village" can be renewed, etc).
+ I abused parentheses, but that's a bad habit of mine online.
(Tbh, if someone wanted to talk about something I've written here, it might be best to pm/wallpost because I might not see it here. Even if my opinion seems one-sided, do know that it's simply something I don't see 'said' enough for the genre which is why the rant, but I'm open-minded enough to still appreciate more mainstream directions. Otherwise it wouldn't have gotten an 8/10 anyway.)

Rating is for the anime, and commentaries on the 'writer' is based on the staff re-writers. It seems they've taken, on many occasions, liberties to change (even for the manga writer/artist) the light novel's writer's story/outcomes. I don't know how much of it was alterned, but I believe even some small details might be the usual "let's change some of what the original source wrote because it'll satisfy the majority of the audience" route most studios tackle. In another sense though, it seems they didn't completely change this like it had been the case for the 'anime-ization' of Narutaru/Bokurano/Claymore (from the top of my head); very luckily as those endings were every time ruined in a disheartening mainstream/more-acceptable fashion. I dislike taking liberties if it's to make something worse (my pov; even if I had seen the anime first, and read the manga the following week (was the case for one of those titles, I knew the manga of the other two prior to the anime), I was shocked at how bad the anime actually was ending-wise); maybe I'm lucky I won't bother reading the entire light novel of Shiki anytime soon |: Don't want to end up even more disappointed with the studio besides from what I've already heard.

I was so innerved when I saw muroi and sunako flee from the city.
Muroi was a character I can't understand at all. He sacrificed himself without being obliged to the Shiki by the pact of blood, he betrayed his friend and his family and became a servant to a scaredy-cat vampire.
Sunako was the wimp and I think she clinged too much to her life for a person who hates being a killer. She should've understood right then at the church, but no - she felt sad for herself and went on with Muroi to live off another bunch of people in another city.

Toshio was the protagonist for me. I liked Shiki because it resembles 'The Plague' by Albert Camus mainly with this character.
