I adore this arc so far. Because the Hachi scenes were my favorite part by far I will start by talking about the smaller things that I would like to mention. Firstly, Jimbei is waiting at the Sea Forest while Luffy and Franky conveniently head there too. Further, we finally saw an update with Franky, something I've been dying to see. He's met Tom's brother, although it purposefully hid his face. I love how insane Sanji would have seemed to an outsider as he lovingly almost accepted the handcuffs then kicked everyone down, but more than that I love how Sanji and Zoro both parallel each other. Both beat the hell out of a group of Fishman Island authorities because "they attacked us"/"they tried to cuff me" and they both proceeded to say "Stop complaining! What's done is done!". Thank gosh for Chopper being there to help Hachi too. Then there was Luffy's great line "If your heart is racing, that's an adventure!", I can't wait for Jimbei to see Luffy arrive with princess Shirahoshi.
So onto the stuff that really got me insanely excited and engaged. The sheer prospect of seeing how Arlong influenced the Fishman Island, and how it changed as he was gone, how the Arlong pirates could have went, and seeing how Hachi has grown all on top of the brilliant plan from Hordy made that sequence phenomenal.
We saw that Hordy Jones and the New Fishman Pirates were too young at the beginning to join up with Arlong but they believed in his mission, and admired him. Hordy now seems to not be a relative of Arlong but actually an Arlong fanboy who wants to carry on his mission. Then there's Hyouzou and Vander Decken. Hyouzou would have joined Arlong as a swordsman on his crew if he could pay him enough, there's a reality where Hyouzou would have been with him. He also quite brutally insulted Hachi's swordsmanship implying he's far stronger, and made it clear he's not here with strong loyalty or allegiance, rather he's here because of money which means he could be swayed. Then, there's Vander Decken who's ego stopped him from joining Arlong, he had to be equals not work under another person. If Arlong was less stern about being the captain he would have joined in that original plan. I found Hordy's words on Arlong interesting "he had a dream and an ability to take action which I could respect". That's one way to put it! Arlong was a radical symbol of fighting against Fishmen's oppressors and he's not alone in this, the New Fishmen pirates learned from their downfalls, realized a Fishman's raw strength isn't enough so they started using drugs, and created a team that is presumably far stronger than Arlong's by not being so stingy and having more money. I guess we can assume that the New Fishman pirates were setting up this plan for a new generation and only just got completely ready to attack coincidentally as Luffy arrived. Which sounds contrived in one point of view, but coming to a destroyed Fishman island would also be super cool so I don't think that's exactly the case.
We saw Vander Decken's power with more clarity. He wears a glove on the Shirahoshi hand as to now lose his palms mark, but he has a free hand to mark whoever he pleases with the other. Once he throws anything, unless there's something to block the thrown object, it will follow its mark forever at full speed. I was quite dumb and wondered why he had a bubble as a fishman, but it was super obvious that it's because he is a devil fruit user in retrospect. I had never thought of a fishman eating a devil fruit before and therefore the idea of a fishman who couldn't swim seemed absurd to me! The plan to forcibly enlist humans on the way to Fishman island like they tried to do with Luffy and use them for this plan is quite brilliant, it too explains why no humans have been properly showing up. They either get killed trying to fight, escape, or get used for this plan. Throw humans they don't care for on the threat of their life into the palace, they open the gate if they survive, then the new Fishman pirates raid the palace!
Now, I must talk about Hachi. Him running in made me so happy, I had missed him. He always interested me as a character. With Arlong he made friends with Zoro and was never personally cruel. He was goofy, loved having fun, and seemed to be there tolerating his friends, or his nakama's cruel actions. The way I've always summarized him is that, he's not a bad guy on a personal level, but he values his friends more than any moral values which means he will go along with such heinous acts. But if we go back, he met Rayleigh and they are great friends, he has had good human relationships before which may explain why the oppression of his people didn't make him so hateful. Then later down the line Arlong and the others got caught and he escaped, no longer with reason to fight back he owned a takoyaki stand and hung out with his friends Camie and Pappagu. But, then he met the Straw Hats again and was forgiven for his horrible acts, then later Luffy befriended the silly group and saved their life! A human called them his friends despite all he did and fought one of the most powerful people in the world, a celestial dragon, for their sake. So, it all makes total sense that Hachi would see humans in an even brighter light despite never being hateful, and further, my understanding of him being a guy who was more about his friends and his crew than anything else, has made a friendship with Luffy and the Straw Hats, one that he'll never forget. So, it's enough for him to challenge Hordy Jones despite him doing what Hachi helped not that long ago. All of this said, it makes Hachi one of my favorite characters and I would love to see how he would face Arlong after the times have changed like this. He's been such a morally complex character, one that reminds me of Bon Clay, at least in the past, in their ability to go along with horrible acts while not being a horrible person! But past that, Hachi has grown to be far less tolerating as he's come to meet and befriend more humans like this, in fact he was too ashamed to face Luffy knowing that someone was continuing Arlong's dream on the island.
So, with Luffy befriending Shirahoshi while Vander Decken tries to kill her. And while having his good friend Hachi pierced by his own sword and numerous arrows nearly killing him, he has personal stakes in this to beat the heck out of some guys hurting his friends. And more than Luffy's personal stakes, Hordy himself wants to gut Luffy for what he did to his hero Arlong. So, this should be good. BUT LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT CARIBOU!!!! That scumbag is out there somewhere and he's ought to be a surprisingly big part of this arc. |
