a dark fantasy story with 90s OVA-like animation? sign me up!
the 50-minute first episode covered the setup very well. now we'll see where the story takes us.

same here, now I'm interested how the story will go, but I was mad at the end because of the cliffhanger tho, I love the animation style behind it because it's like similar to th 90s 80s animation

I've been using Anime Schedule, and I was seeing if the Onmyo Kaiten Re: Birth Verse anime was playing already, when I got recommended this one (and, well, Crunchyroll had it on the calendar as well).

Holy fu**! This thing was brutal for a first episode! That demon was not messing around; he was lethal.

Violently:

And then, triggering feminists:

I like this one. 45 minutes is a long episode, but I think it was worth it. Comparing it to the other long series for this summer (Takopi), yeah... Violence seems "safer" rather than talking about what adults' choices do to children's minds.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Being reborn as an immortal zombie babysitter for the demon king's adopted royal baby has to be one of the more creative fates that are "worse" than death.

Hope this doesn't get slept on because the effort poured in really shows, and the premise is pretty dope.

Hour long premiere ✅ badass cute female lead ✅ metal af dark fantasy setting ✅ traumatic and brutal scenes ✅ twists ✅ mysterious and thought provoking premise ✅ movie-like credits ✅ Clevatess ticked all my boxes. I love when I know anime of the season from the first week lol.

This was amazing. I love the almost Christine narrative of a de facto choosing to walk among man and learn how he lives. Clevatess destroyed the kingdom and killed everyone because they attacked him, but he himself never asked why humans would do that. Why would humanity feel trapped being confined to one continent and feel the need to fight back? The irony of an all powerful being raising a weak and defenceless child.

As cruel as Clevatess might want to present himself, he’s not above being moved by the words of a woman trying to protect a baby. He asks himself over the course of the episode “why didn’t listen to her and take this baby” but it’s because he knew, deep down, that she was right. Children can’t choose their parents and humans can be ANYTHING. That’s what makes us special. We don’t have to go down the same path.

That said, of course humanity see the Hideans get wiped out and instead of trying to figure out why and band together to stop the demon beasts, they’re just after their smithing techniques and resources. 🤦🏽‍♂️ really looking forward to seeing how the political stuff works out in this, finding out what the dark beasts are and why they kept humanity confined and how Luna will react to all of this when she gets old enough to realize wtf’s going on. I can tell I’m gonna love Klev and Alicia’s interactions though.

Very interesting musical set up here with Maeshima Mayu of Myth and Roid on the OP and ELLIE GOULDING on the ED lmao. I’m seated. Soon as I seen dudes getting their limbs cut off and chopped up like meat in the first few mins I knew this was special

I started reading it some time ago and was really looking forward to the adaptation after watching the PV. I am not disappointed!

The production quality is so high, it gives me hope for a good fantasy anime that isn't another isekai or villainess trope.

"A beast like you would not understand."
These are not words to resolve a major misunderstanding, foolish arrogant King; these are words to misplace your head.

Because at its core this is a story about misunderstandings. The Hideans did not attack Clevatess to conquer his lands; they attacked him because he and his dark beasts were blocking them from exploring the unknown land to the South.

Attacking Clevatess was just a means to that end, but Clevatess clearly did not know that. The King was given the chance to explain it, but instead chose to be a condescending asshole; hence... the head.

Furthermore, it is clear the various humanoid races and Clevatess (and perhaps the other Dark Beast Lords too) know barely nothing about each other. What the humanoids assume is that the dark beasts and their lords keep them contained in Edthea.

And what Clevatess & co assume is that the humanoids are hostile pests who want to kill them just for the sake of it or for their land. And so far Alicia's Hero Syndrome and baggage has not helped the two sides understand each other and their goals.

But I suspect Alicia and Luna, the Crown Prince baby, will get there. But in the meantime Hidea -what's left of it- will probably conquered by other humanoids.

A fascinating story, I'll keep on watching.

Btw, I freaked out at the beginning with what looked like a 480p source crudely upscaled to 1080p.
I thought the entire thing would be like this, but the blurry low res first few minutes were just meant to convey Alicia's childhood memories 😅

I loved every second from it and this is coming from someone who stays away from anything with death on it, the quality was superb and I'm super intrigued about what has been show from the world so far, like this is just one of the 4 kings and we don't know if Clevatess is either the weakest or strongest of all of them, I'm a fan of the moment when he said his name and it turns out it is the name of the show (I'm aware everyone who read the synopsis and etc. knew about this but I like to go blind to shows besides barely watching teasers), Luna is super cute and Alice and Clevatess seem like a fun combo.

@KanameYuuki I think they stated he was the strongest, which was why they chose to attack him first. On hindsight a terrible decision! LOL Should have gone for a weaker target FIRST.

Bad dialogues, Alicia yelling and being surprised at every single thing said is insufferable, the intro flashback was bad: the guy was talking to a little girl the same way someone talks to his boys in a bar... And this disgusting, bad quality, blurry filter just looked like a cheap vintage effect.
I can already see the leaks in the production despite some well animated scenes.. I believe it will slowly turn into generic-bad but I hope they prove me wrong.

Interesting. This was a lot darker and more serious than most shows that I typically watch, but I'm intrigued and enjoying it so far. The action looks good enough that I didn't fast forward through it like I often do, and there's even a bit of comedy sprinkled in.

They especially caught me off guard by making the main character and her entire party die (ostensibly) pretty early on. I wasn't expecting the main villain to also be a main character, so this will probably be an unorthodox story, at the very least.

I'm still not completely convinced that I'll stick with it, but I'll give it the three episode test and, if they keep up this quality, I'll most likely stick with it

That was pretty good 40+ mins of anime I just watches.
Clevatess was absolutely op in his normal form, those humas didn't stand a chance.
It's a dark anime but will have funny moments since he decided to take the baby and revive Alicia.
Kinda surprise he was taken out instantly in human form, guess I will just have to wait and see what he does next time.

Good ep

We meet Alicia the MC and Clevatess, who is now Klen as a human.

The heroes fail to stop Clevatees and he destroys the entire kingdom.

He adopts a child from a dying mother and names it Luna.

Ngl, his goals were kinda weird as they changed, but alr.

Alicia is stringed along with Klen and randomly some bandits instantly knock them out, which is kind of a shocker. Wasn't expecting a 46 min episode, thought it was two eps. Also, all this grain filter feels like mushoku all over again.

I am a cautious person. But this looks like a great story. A smooth beginning that deftly setups the main conflict. Leading to a dark failure for the humans.
The main characters are fascinating. Clevatass/Klen had the feel of a supremely powerful nonhuman. Alicia...didn't get much time. Sad to see the confident child turned hero turned into roadkill. Great performance when she is resurrected in a horrible situation.

I feel like I'm watching a different anime from everyone else. People keep talking about the high production values & great animation, but I thought the exact opposite.

In fact, when I first started watching it on Crunchyroll, I thought my streaming settings had dropped back down to 480p by accident. So I went to switch to 1080p, and nope, I waas already there. It looked like an old 80's or 90's anime in terms of darkness & design, which isn't a bad thing or anything, but it certainly doesn't look modern.

Then you have the actual animation... that "battle" with the monsters & dark beast was really rough. Lots of sliding still frames, really static shots with only slight movement, lots of flashing & "woosh" effects to hide the choppy movement.

It also has a weird issue with camera shaking/flickering. It's not like a camera trying to move, but instead the image jutters around just a bit at all times (like old school hand drawn animation cells being flipped through rather than a smooth digital production). It's especially noticeable in scenes where Clevatess & Alicia are standing still talking in front of a static background. Everything is constantly shaking a bit.

Technical whining aside, I feel like this is a show that'll get more interesting with time. From the start, it's extremely unoriginal, but it does give the impression it's building towards something more worthwhile.

Also, leave it to anime to make things weird for no reason. "Show me your breasts" and the baby just had to pee in her face... Ok, I thought this anime wanted me to take it seriously, but I guess it's going a different route.

Either way, I'll give it a couple more episodes. They clearly think it'll be good, as it got a day 1 dub & 45 minute episode. Hopefully that ends up being true.

Demon king something something blah blah blah... Honestly, does Japan never get tired of this fantasy slop... genuinely? To make matters worse, we jump straight to the present with a suuuuuper balanced hero party made up of... like ten melee DPS and a bunch of archers. Uh, are healers or support classes like a myth here? Because they definitely would've come in handy when they went up against Clevatess, where "everyone" died.

Gotta give it some credit, the animation’s actually pretty decent for the usual fantasy slop this is. But solid visuals can only carry so much when the story itself is this bland. Like why were the heroes fighting enemies clearly above their level? What made them go after Clevatess in the first place? Was it just fear, or something more calculated?

But judging from the fact that this guy was willing to take in a baby, Clevatess doesn’t come off as inherently evil. He just seems like someone taking extreme measures against what he sees as a threat.... what a unique trait that is. Anyway, I actually found myself kinda enjoying the second half of the episode, so I guess the whole 50-minute premiere worked in its favor.

Because honestly, if that generic-ass intro had been episode one on its own, I can’t imagine it hooking anyone. I mean, watching these two try to take care of the baby, well really just Alicia, since Clen was just spectating and throwing out snarky remarks while she was getting pissed on and dealing with all kinds of crap… lmaoooo. Then we got back to the fantasy stuff with the king or whatever and I was reminded what I was watching.

That ending though... am I seriously supposed to believe some random-ass bandits managed to take down someone as powerful as Clevatess? Like what LOL. I mean, on paper it's an interesting enough premise sure, but whether or not they actually deliver on it remains to be seen. So far, the fantasy elements look pretty generic, to say the least. Chemistry between the two leads will for sure be looking like the saving grace... and the visuals if they don't go downhill from here.
@IzanaSolos what do you have against fantasy? it is way more interesting than most settings, has limitless possibilities in storytelling, and has prebuilt settings that have been refined for generations. better than real-world based stories, and perfect for a medium like anime where production value has little to do with setting. on top of that, it can easily be relatable for fans of RPGs and video game culture. i'm tired of people saying all fantasy stories are generic slop, instead explain exactly what you don't like or don't criticize it at all.
