Now it shows that I got 0 messages, even though there are some :p Well, I guess it's better than having 65534, so let's say it's fixed :p

Just don't delete all Messages! Or it will look like you have 65534 again... xD

uhh, i'm not exactly too sure how this is supposed to work, but if i also post that i'm having a problem, it will get fixed right?

"You may only have 100 messages in your sent box at a time. Please remove some before trying to send another message."
"You have 65535 messages in your sent box. Displaying messages 1 - 20."
"No messages to display"

ok there, i guess that's it. i figured since this was a universal problem, it would've been fixed for everyone, but apparently its being done one by one? ya?

You have to remove all Messages from your Sent box.. I think, Mods made that there is no more limit in Inbox, but in Sent box...

Delete all in Sent box, and then tell us what's happening.. xD

My problem got fixed, now it properly says I have 0 messages in my inbox.
I fixed it by keeping all of my messages in my inbox until it gives me the actual number of messages.

Hope this helps those of you who have this problem =D

I'm not sure how to handle this, but I assume you post here and you are made aware of the problem and it will be taken care of soon, right? Well I also have the bug affecting me.

Excuse me Site Administrator, but my message inbox number seems to have glitched as well, saying that I have (65535) messages. I cleared out my inbox and it still hasn't changed.

Whenever you get the chance I would appreciate the fix! :-)

After deleting 2 duplicate messages, because it kept on displaying that I have 1 new message, things got worse.. When I refresh the page, it now shows that I have 65535 new messages. This is obviously a bug in the coding of the website. Is there a way to fix this glitch or will it possibly go away after awhile?

Edit: I just tested something to see if my guess is correct and yes, I figured it out somehow, but it is going to be very tedious to fix the problem entirely. Apparently, the number "65535" messages is negative and the way to get the number as "0", one must receive 65535 messages. I tested it by sending myself a message and it reduced my number "65535" to "65534", but I don't intend on fixing it on my own by sending myself another 65534 messages. Is there a more efficient way to fix the glitch?

Edit #2: Nice!! The problem is now fixed. :)

When you had those unread messages, what types were they? Messages from people or from MAL administrator?

I have something like this, It always says I have one message more in my inbox than I have and when I empty it it says I still have one message. It's been like this for a few months now but I left it, hoping that it would go away; but it didn't. :(

I have only a few messages in my inbox, but it says I have "65534" messages when I have read them all.

It still lets me send and receive messages, but I would like to know how to fix this problem.

Okay people.
Xinil has said multiple times that he cannot fix this problem without steps as to how it happened. Posts simply stating "this is happening to me!" will not help it get fixed. Please try to share what you were doing when the error occurred.

I was at the Die IE club, looking at the photo section, when I looked over at the sidebar and saw my message count skyrocket. Before that, I had just read & deleted a message in my inbox. Does this help at all? >:3

Suddenly, 65535 MESSAGES.

Let's see, it said 1 before, so I checked it to see a message from kei-clone, and right after I opened the message, the number changed.

I was just playing around seeing if I could some how reproduce this bug. I wasn't successful but I did find another bug that might be related. I'll get to that below.

First, here are my thoughts on why the original bug is occurring. Firstly, how are integers represented in memory? Well in binary of coarse. It is rather trivial for positive numbers, but negative numbers can be tricky.

Firstly, it might be of interest to note that 65536 is equal to a 1 followed by 16 zeros in binary (1 0000 0000 0000 0000). The number 65535 is represented by 16 ones (1111 1111 1111 1111). This leads me to believe that MAL uses a 16 bit integer to represent the number of messages that a user has.

Now this could be a signed, or unsigned integer. If it is signed this means that the most left digit of the binary sequence is reserved for representing the sign (+/-) of the number.

There are three ways (that I know of) that signed integers work. What is important though is how each represents -1, or -0/0. The first is the most straight forward. If the left most digit is a 0 the number is positive, and if it is 1 the number is negative. In either case the other digits are interpreted as per standard rules and the sign is fixed to the resulting base 10 number.

Example: (16-bit signed)
0000 0000 1000 0000 = 128
1000 0000 1000 0000 = -128

0000 0000 0000 0000 = 0
1000 0000 0000 0000 = -0

The next example work differently. Although the left most digit still represents the positive or negative value, the rest of the digits are interpreted by switching their value (0s become 1s, and 1s become 0s).

Example: (16-bit signed)
0111 1111 1111 1111 = 32767
1000 0000 0000 0000 = -32767

0000 0000 0000 0000 = 0
1111 1111 1111 1111 = -0

The last method is similar to the previous except that it eliminates the -0. Thus...

0111 1111 1111 1111 = 32767
1000 0000 0000 0000 = -32768

0000 0000 0000 0000 = 0
1111 1111 1111 1111 = -1

So what do I think is happening? I think you are probably passing a signed integer value into an unsigned integer.

Imagine want the result of this would be when using the second method. If a user marks their all their messages read and for some reason the value gets converted -0, then passed to an unsigned integer it would have the value 65535. Or if using the third method some how the number of messages got marked as -1, then passed into an unsigned integer it would read as 65535.

Anyway, I hope that helps. My guess is you already knew that and are trying to figure out where in the code the problem is.

Anyway on to the bug I found.

If you have a message in your inbox and you try to mark a SENT message as unread nothing happens. Empty your inbox and then try to mark a SENT message unread and suddenly you have an unread message in your box, but the sent message is NOT highlighted like a normal unread message. Now if you mark a sent message unread in this fashion and then delete it, it does not reduce your "new message" count. It still shows that I have an unread message even though both my inbox, and sent message container are empty.

I'll post the above in it's own thread as well as it may be a different bug.
