To me it looks like Kimi ni Todoke has a slight edge with the regulars. So I've created a thread for that.

I'm reading through the thread to see if I can add any suggestions. The first comment I have is about the summer stack mentioned on the last page:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/6166/Asobi_ni_Iku_yo
I would advise against this one as a group watch. This is a pure ecchi / fan-service series, and the plot is pretty flimsy. "Seto no Hanayome" would be a much better choice from the list for that stuff.

"Hotarubi no Mori e" is also good, it's a 40 minute short film, then if people enjoy that, maybe 2 cours of "Natsume Yuujinchou" which is a series by the same manga author and anime director.

My top picks:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/329/Planetes
https://myanimelist.net/anime/10800/Chihayafuru
https://myanimelist.net/anime/6114/Rainbow__Nisha_Rokubou_no_Shichinin

Some other picks:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/12531/Sakamichi_no_Apollon (1 cour)
https://myanimelist.net/anime/50/Aa_Megami-sama_TV

@cipheron thanks for the list of suggestions. I have already watched the three first picks, but I am always in for a re-watch.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for the suggestions. Funny enough Cat Planet Cuties was one of the first series I scored a 10/10 back in 2019 when I'd just gotten back into anime, it had a good genre mix and I liked the humour and British comedy references like Red Dwarf, Black Adder, Dr Who etc. However I wouldn't recommend it to others. My Bride is a Mermaid is one of my top mid 2000's rom-com picks, loved that show.

I've struck through all the shows that either I, @inim or @whiteflame55 have watched. Rainbow looks like it may be a good suggestion, @filifjonkan did you say you'd seen this show as I can't see it on your completed list?

Kimi ni Todoke is coming to and end (they better kiss or someone may get really angry). So let's kick off the discussion about the next group watch item.

@cipheron just like @23feanor pointed out, I've seen almost all shows from your list. The delicate part with the current group is that we have very experienced membership, so if it's rated high (>8), sufficiently popular (say a few 10K) or a well known "hidden gem that nobody has watched": one of us probably has watched it. Feanor specializes in the colorful world of rom-com, ecchi and comedy. I'm myself am a hardcore "elistist", and both of us systematically watch best of 80s and 90s for some time. For example, I've seen 99% of all shows from the Critics and Conisseurs and Uber-Elitist Plebs lists. From your list, Rainbow, Gin no Sajo and Cat Cuties would worl for me. So the best bet for suggestions are B-list hidden gems outside the usual suspects. This includes trash gems, e.g. I've massively enjoyed our recent Cross Ange watch.

For the time being, my suggestion is to just keep going where we left of, which is https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1872213&show=150#msg67958083

@23feanor priorized the material like this, and I'll add Rainbow as it seems we all could need it. I've removed Kimi ni Todoke and Baby and me.
  • Sailor Moon
  • Kobato
  • Mahoujin Guruguru (2017)
  • Bounen no Xamdou
  • Fruit of Grisaia
  • Joshiraku
  • Kokkoro Connect
  • Rainbow
How about you, @23feanor @inim @whiteflame55 @filifjonkan @RandomFriday @Antalk @jdvz @JokerVentura @KainiusTheGreat @ruckes @kekekeKaj @cipheron? The prefered format of a reply is the top 3 picks from that list, in order of preference. Thanks!

As usual I'm happy with each entry. But to eat my own dogfood, here's my preference.
  • Mahoujin Guruguru (2017)
  • Rainbow
  • Fruit of Grisaia (both seasons)

@inim Agreed on Kimi ni Todoke, better be some romantic development coming soon! Also, while I agree that it's become a bit more difficult to find shows none of us have seen, I do appreciate that it gives us the opportunity to dip into material that many of us (myself included) might not ever have considered and really give it a chance. It's been worthwhile.

As for my top 3 from that list, here's my ranking:

Mahoujin Guruguru (2017) - something goofy and light seems like a good palette cleanser and I've found that humorous shows can be a good gamble to take
Koboto - similar feeling here, looks a little less goofy but still a good time
Rainbow - highest rated show on the list, a lot grittier (and probably my top choice for our next watch), but distinct enough that watching it now would still work

It's harder after 2+ years, but there's still plenty of room, especially if you allow for older shows. Here are some sitting on my PTW for a long time, each of them is probably a special gem and I've checked that "we" haven't seen them. I'd love to add all or some to the candidates for the round after the current one.

I'd strongly consider Banana Fish, been on my ptw for a while and looks really good. Kanon and Skip Beat are shows that I have a passing familiarity with and would have some interest in as well. The rest are shows I'm not familiar with, though I recall that Romeo no Aoi Sora was one we discussed before that I'd be willing to try.

@whiteflame55 the ones you don't know are on the list for these reasons:

- Treasure Island
Dezaki is a masterclass director (Rose of Versailles, Ashite no Joe, ...) and Treasure Island really is the best 70s show I've not seen yet. I agree with this stack to be the decade's "must see" list: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/19469
The other Dezaki shows I'd like to see are Ace no Narae and In Search of Mother, but only as 2nd choice.

- Gin
That doggy flick is cited endlessly by other directors, it's a bit like Shounen Conan or Ashite no Joe, once you know it you find references everywhere.

- WMT
Correct, I'm trying to trick you guys into WMT for a while. Without much success, you don't bite. Just trust me here as somebody who watched Akage no Anne and Shoujo Alps Heidi. WMT rocks.

- Other
I forgot 3 shows we talked about recently / others suggested
https://myanimelist.net/anime/27947/Lupin_III_2015
and after the success of Kimi ni Todoke, the similar shows:

Hello all and Happy New Year!

A slight tangent off topic but still relevant(?), I finally got Jennifer Cihi added to the 'People' data base.  She sings the english op for Sailor Moon.  I met her at Animarathon held at BGSU in March of 2019 and it has taken almost four years for the MAL staff to add her as I submitted her recommendation after I got home from the two day event.  She is super cool and was glad to have someone older than 15 to talk with and someone who also knew how to use deodorant, lol.  Those animecons get funky.

I'm quite looking forward to picking up Lupin III 2015 at some point but no rush. Same with Sailor Moon but understand this might not be to everybody's taste.

@Antalk I love some of the 90's english op's (thinking of Tenchi Muyo and Yu Yu Hakusho here) so looking forward to the day we get around to Sailor Moon so we can check the OP you mentioned out.

I'm working on something with Google Sheets to organize suggestions. The first thing I did was index all the shows on MAL, 54000 entries so far, by year, score, runtime.

Then I added inim, 23feanor, whiteflame and filifjonkan's scored anime as a filter, to remove any seen ones. I can verify all the high-rated stuff that nobody has on their list, to see if anything's been overlooked.

(I noted the thing about CrunchyRoll and will try and filter stuff by CrunchyRoll availability too. Netflix availability would be harder to do however).

These are things that came up near the top of the filter which I think were all discussed:

- Banana Fish
- Rainbow
- Ginga Nagareboshi Gin
- Takarajima (Treasure Island)

Here are some things that look like strong contenders

- Tiger & Bunny
- Skip Beat
- 91 Days
- Jormungand
- Arslan Senki (TV)
- Romeo x Juliet

I'm also filtering by oldest shows, these would be my picks for that. For these however i extended the filter to 52 episode shows:

- Jungle Taitei (52)
- Ace no Werae (26)
- Uchuu Senkan Yamato (26)
- Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Herlock (42)
- Soukou Kihei Votoms (52)
- Kikou Souseiki Mospeada (25)

@cipheron

if you go thru my list, I add where I was able to watch the anime as the first entry in my tags.  as an example:   Kidou Senshi Gundam: Senkou no Hathaway for the tags i have netflix // war, mecha.  i watched it on netflix.  not all of my entries are like this as i started doing this only a few years back.

if you see baka, i downloaded it from bakabt.me.  they have quite the library of anime and manga.

i know netflix, amazon prime, youtube and hulu have decent catalogues of anime.  i steer clear of crunchroll as it lags way too much and i dont pay for the service so my selection of anime is very limited.

Here's an attempt to fairly pick a show. The order weights them with 3, 2 or 1 points. In addition, the count of mentions gives one mention point.

@inim
Mahoujin Guruguru (2017)
Rainbow
Fruit of Grisaia

@Antalk
Bounen no Xamdou
Fruit of Grisaia
Rainbow

@23feanor
Mahoujin Guruguru (2017)
Kobato
Fruit of Grisaia

@kekekeKaj
Rainbow

@whiteflame55
Mahoujin Guruguru (2017)
Koboto
Rainbow

Mahoujin Guruguru (2017) 3, 0, 3, 0, 3 = 9pt in 3 mentions
Rainbow 2, 1, 0, 3, 1 = 7pt in 4 mentions
Fruit of Grisaia 1, 2, 1, 0, 0 = 4pt in 3 mentions
Kobato 0, 2, 2, 0, 0 = 4pt in 2 mentions
Bounen no Xamdou 0, 3, 0, 0, 0 = 3pt in 1 mentions

So the winner is Mahoujin Guruguru (2017), with a close runner up Rainbow. To cut decision making short, I'd create the next thread for Magic Circle Guru Guru, unless somebody throws in a veto soon.

It's comedy and by that virtue hit or miss, so I hope it works for all. Please note that the director changed after episode 3, setting a slightly different tone for the rest of the show.

It's that time again, time to pick the next show. We whittled the next show down to two; Lupin III 2015 and the World Masterpiece Theatre entry Romeo and the Black Brothers. Please submit your preferred choice if you fancy joining in.

After that we are back to the previous selection of shows, which I've compiled from all the messages above;

Arslan Senki
Kikou Souseiki Mospeada
Sailor Moon
Kobato
Bounen no Xamdou
Fruit of Grisaia
Joshiraku
Kokkoro Connect
Skip Beat
Banana Fish
Kanon 2006
Treasure Island
Lovely Complex
Silver Fang
Ore Monogatari
Baby and Me (once full sub available)
Iron Blooded Orphans
Tenjo Tenge
* Romeo & Black Brothers or Lupin 2015 (whichever doesn't get picked for this upcoming next watch)

This pool of shows should keep us going for a while. If you could select you're top 3 in ranked order (option 1 getting 3 points, option getting 2 points and option 3 getting 1 point) then we can whittle down the list for the group watch after next.

After spending some time in more modern anime, I'm interested in taking a step back, and I think that @inim has waited long enough. So, Romeo & Black Brothers is my pick.

As for a top 3 from the list you've both compiled (thanks for that), here are my picks:

1. Banana Fish
2. Iron Blooded Orphans
3. Treasure Island

Gotta get at least one classic in there and Treasure Island looks like the most interesting of these. IBO and Banana Fish have been sitting on my ptw list for a while.

@inim @whiteflame55 yes it's about time I dipped my toe into WMT so Romeo and Black Brothers it is for the next show.

For the show after that my picks would be:

1. Kobato
2. Treasure Island
3. Lupin III 2015

I would put Treasure Island first as it does sound very interesting and I love my pirate stories, but after Romeo & Black Brothers may want something a bit different as both these shows sound like 'classics'.

No big deal waiting with Treasure Island, anything on the list is just fine. Would it be your first Osamu Dezaki show? If so, high time to learn about the origin of the "charcoal still" cut, and why he's the king of melodrama. Dezaki certainly is a favorite of mine, and incredibly influential.

Thanks for creating the new thread and making the hyperlinks for the shows on the choice list above. Looking at his profile, yes, Treasure Island will be my first Dezaki show (i have Rose of Versailles and Ashita Joe on ptw list). As I've said in thread, one aspect of Rainbow I do really appreciate is those still frames, which I since I've learnt from you are called 'charcoal still frames', lovely affect. Will be good to see the work of the master.

Dezaki is a specimen of a "two headed director" like the Coen Brothers today. He frequently and closely worked with Akio Sugino as his character designer, who is a legend on his own right. Their work to the briefly trained eye is instantly recognizable. As for the stills, Wikipedia puts it like this:
Dezaki was known for his distinct visual style, which makes use of split screen, stark lighting, extensive use of dutch angle, and pastel freeze frames that he called "postcard memories", which may be his most famous trademark. They feature a process whereby the screen fades into a detailed "painting" of the simpler original animation. Many of his techniques became popular and came to be seen as special techniques of Japanese animation.
The most famous of them all probably is the "pure white ash" scene (and the dialog leading to it) from Ashita no Joe 2.

Less than a week left in Black Brothers ... Treasure Island next? I'm ok with anything from the recent discussion.

I don't mind Treasure Island next but was thinking another classic book adaption might be a bit similar to Romeo and something different might be a refreshing palate cleanser. So either Treasure Island, or maybe Fruit of Grisia, Lupin 3rd or Iron Blooded Orphans from our 2nd choices from last poll. I'm happy with any of these.

Same here, obviously, our list is so condensed anything goes. In terms of AWC "requirements", Fruit of Grisia would be nice as I can fit in a show tagged with Harem well.

I'm good with Fruit of Grisia, something a bit different to last couple of watches, @whiteflame55 are you ok with this? Guessing we'll watch both seasons (Fruit & Eden) and prequel OVA (Cocoon) and see how we go from there?

According to a review on anidb, two seasons and the movie cover the complete Visual Novel.
S1+movie+S2 (until Rakuen) because this is the completion of the story; Phantom Bullet is a different story.
Standard VN into anime adaptation flow. Different routes (S1) + backstory (movie) + final main route or something like that (S2).

Both sites link the 3 parts in that oder, so I'd say prequel or backstory, let's put it in the middle. Rating wise, these 3 are the 7s (MAL) / 6s (anidb). The movies which came after that seem to be a cash grab, going down to 4s on anidb.

I'm good with doing Fruit of Grisia. We can hit something a bit heavier after that, but good to have a light one in the mix.

Fine, I'll create a new group watch topic for S1-M-S2 then. As for being "ligh one", I'm not sure. The show has a weird combination of tags. On anidb, it has "erotic game" and "borderline porn", but it lacks "ecchi" and rather has "angst" at two stars. On MAL it also lacks ecchi despite R+ and has the rare Psychological tag combined with Harem (because of VN I guess). The ratings are good, so bring it on. Just saying that it's probably not your generic harem ecchi comedy despite similarities.

Alright, that still works. Appreciate your clarifying.

I remember watching a few episodes of S1 back during my first anime watching phase (can't remember why I stopped watch Grisia but think real life got in the way and didn't come back to anime until 2019) and it's not your normal harem. The MC is pretty badass, not your usual beta male protag in most harem, reminds me a bit of Reiji from Phantom: Requiem for a Phantom. Plus the girls all have issues from the little I remember. Should be a little different.

That's a clear vote I think, good enough to create a thread. I'll change again if straggler votes change the outcome.

@inim @whiteflame55 It's about that time again to pick the next show. My top 3 picks would be:

1. Lupin 2015
2. Kobato
3. Heroic Legend of Arslan

@inim if you're still busy then no worries, look forward to having you back when things quieten down, but in meantime @whiteflame55 and I could maybe pick up YLIA, which we both need to watch but you've already seen

1. Banana Fish
2. Treasure Island

An update on my situation. Things calmed down a bit on June 1st, the disaster didn't strike. Phew. Also, my annual AWS challenge chore is complete and submitted, so I no longer have "must watch" items. Welcome back freedom of choice. However, I admittedly also suffer a bit from anime fatigue. But the option to punish you with the abomination that is YLIA by neglectance is a horror, so I'm in again :D Sorry Kaori, the plot device among the waifus. I'm dead serious guys, watch something worth your time, this is teen kitsch and along with Psycho Pass one of the worst highly hyped shows I ever sat trough.

Tactical voting in the face of knowing your lists feels a bit dirty ... but, Lupin has 4 points and whatever I vote, only Kobato., Banana Fish and Treasure Island could beat it with 5+ points. I'm seriously interested in watching more Dezaki. The math of tactical voting is tricky here, not only must TI win, also Bananafish and Lupin must not get points or they win accidentially! Thus:
  1. Treasure Island (3+2=5pt)
  2. abstain
  3. abstain
I hope that's OK @23feanor, my suggestion would be to do Lupin right after that because we all have it listed (or would have ...).
