Eh, that was weird. Kinda interesting, but not THAT great. Art is awesome, but animation is pretty weak for a KyoAni show. Can't blame them, after animatin Hyouka...

Usual pretty KyoAni animation.

As for the story, I'm not really sure. It's an interesting premise, but, with me being who I am, I find comedy and romance to be a very poor combination when done badly. We'll see how it goes.

Characters. I like Yuuta, he has a good attitude (and I rather like Fukuyama's voice). I don't like Rikka. She's annoying and gets in Yuuta's way. Let Yuuta do stuff, you fool. I may also like that Makoto guy.

In any case, this can go either way. Like Hyouka.

Okay, that was incredibly enjoyable. I think this has the potential to be the best show of the season, and the interaction between the two is really cute and endearing as well. Love the vibrant art style and the lighthearted nature of the show, made me laugh a few times.

Haters gonna hate.

Well, I sure am gonna hate it - not because of the show itself, however autistic it appears to be (it's KyoAni after all), but because of the annoying fan base that's bound to gather around it.
Proof? Just look at the comment above you.

Hating a show because of its fanbase is incredibly silly. All moderately popular anime will have overzealous and/or annoying individuals so it's to be expected.

That's KyoAni that I like - making either moeblobs or absurd comedies.
And this was really nice one and adorable.

Rikka is love in her delusional way of life (I sense here some potential for drama but if handed well who knows).

Oh, so you're gonna hate show, because KyoAni have ''fanboys'' like me? what the hell.I won't deny here, i love KyoAni because most of shows i watched from them were IMO awesome, and now when i see they made another title that looks amazing in my eyes by so far im just happy like hell.I don't think you should hate the show because of fanbase though ._.

I think you're confusing animation with art here. Chuuni has a simpler aesthetic compared to Hyouka, but in terms of animation, showing movement, Chuuni's first episode is marvelous. Many well-animated cuts, I'd say it might be the best-animated debut episode of the season.

No, the art is pretty bright, and it's great. But a few scenes had somewhat sloppy animation, mostly in the backgrounds. It's nothing major tho.

Ok I think complaining about the opening is really dumb, I mean seriously like any kyoto animation opening hate it all you want it is never leaving your head no matter how hard you try.
I was very confused, not by the episode but that I found a 5 minute short before the show started with a different opening, animation and such and it really sucked, in fact whatever it was almost turned me off to the series completely, so now I can gladly say after the actual episode I enjoyed it, I actually seeing the premise of a girl in highschool who thinks she has superpowers and is awesome but doesn't incredibly familiar but I can't put my finger on what it is.
I am definitly watching at least the first 4 or so episodes before I judge this show but overall in my opinion a pretty solid start.

Combination of hyouka and another for characters and probably a bit of k-on well two of the three are kyoani.

That was awesome. As expected.

Such amazing art/animation quality as usual by KyoAni. Rikka is so moe, as is Yuuta's little sisters. Rikka is shaping up to my one of my favorite characters.

Also, Lelouch! Freaking Lelouch!

<3'd it, can't wait for ep 2! I look forward to seeing the characters grow and seeing some epic chuunibyou battles.

Great start of an awesome anime. I honestly think this might be better than SAO. Just hope it doesn't start rushing episodes like they did with SAO. Love the opening and ending. Rikka was acting pretty cute during the last few minutes. I don't like the 8th grade syndrome talk but it's cute if it's her. She's so cute when she acts all shy. ^_^
Oh and I thought Shinka sort of looked like Asuna from SAO. She just has the same chestnut colored hair but in a less braided style. Also, love the K-on style like animation.

Not telling you what value to put in MAL ratings; but you shouldn't just look at half the ratings like that; only 201 people voted on that 7.58; its safe to assume that it will go much higher

Good first episode very colorful and bright take on the art this time around, despite the kinda annoying song in the OP it reminded me of the Haruhi Suzumiya Op lol mainly the dancing in cheerleading outfits.

with that being said there is some similarly to this and Haruhi though this seems to be more about humor let's just see if Rikka weirdness is the real deal or another Kobato haha either will hopefully it makes for some good laughs.

I agree with Solkiskey. Some parts of motions looks rather dull compared to, say, Hyouka.
It's not bad, of course not. Rather, it's great. It's just a bit lower than usual KyoAni's standard, which has always been superior.
It seems that they have less sponsors for this show because it's their own novel, or so I've heard.

Pretty enjoyable introductory episode, though slightly disappointing, yet I’m expecting quite a bit more for future episodes, because, despite the few flaws present in this episode, the characters and story definitely have a lot of potential. The lighthearted, humorous tone of the story really worked here. Of course, there's barely any subtlety in it's execution, but that's hardly a complaint, since that's part of it's distinguishing appeal.

I like the strange, embarrassing nature of the events that unfolded throughout this episode, particularly whenever Rikka would demonstrate her false "abilities" in front of other, unsuspecting people. These isolated moments that dealt with the main character's unleashing their fantasized powers were quite well done, and I'm rather excited to see how creative these sequences become over time. I also enjoyed the brief glimpse of Yuuta's family, since they seem likely to provide some excellent humor in the future. The ending was especially good, as Rikka persuades Yuuta to refrain from trashing his youthful possesions, followed by his momentary lack of restraint, as he indulges his chuunibyou inclinations in order to satisfy Rikka's intensifying curiosity and to rectify her momentary disappointment.

Rikka was great, and often amusingly cute, although I can certainly understand why some might view her as annoying, since her relative immaturity can be off-putting. I really like Yuuta and his somewhat contrasting characterization, as he's considerably embarrassed by his chuunibyou phase, and seems entirely reluctant to slip into that abnormality. I'm hoping that the primary focus will continue to reside on Yuuta and Rikka and the development of their relationship, as their interactions are definitely, up to this point, the best element of the show. As such, their relationship is really good so far, due particularly to their superb chemistry, which is certainly elevated by the excellent voice acting, allowing them to play off each other's contrasting quirks quite well. I'd much prefer it if the side characters don't interfere too greatly moving forward, as the story might lose a portion of it's charm.

It will be really interesting to see how Rikka and Yuuta will develop, and if this condition will, by the end, be embraced by Yuuta or discarded by Rikka. Of course, it could take neither of these directions, but I think the character development can be quite rewarding and complex if it takes the route of Rikka, with Yuuta's help, moving past her fanciful delusions to the point where she eventually understands and embraces the importance of maturing into adulthood.

The production elements are inconsistent in quality, and, of course, not up to the level of Hyouka's, but not much else is, so that's hardly a significant complaint. For instance, the background art isn't nearly as visually impressive as Hyouka's, as it comparatively lacks that incredible attention to detail that was consistently present in the latter. The animation though, is superb, particularly in how it excellently captures the fluidity in Rikka's slightly exaggerated movements. The direction was impressive, as it handled the pacing of the episode in an excellent manner, introducing the main characters in a lighthearted, humorous fashion that immediately illuminated their unique personalities, while remaining interesting throughout. The character designs are, for the most part, thoroughly mediocre, but certainly not bad.

Although the OP is rather poor visually, the music is quite good. As for the ED, it's a marked improvement over the OP, but, yet again, rather unremarkable, save for the nice song.

All in all, Chuunibyou is an intriguing and enjoyable show that, despite several mediocre aspects, is rather promising, due mostly to the greatly endearing characters and story. The first episode managed to balance the embarassing situations, bits of introductory character development, and the numerous, occasionally romantic interactions between the main pair surprisingly well, rarely failing to impress in those areas. I'm rather looking forward to the next episode, and I have confidence that it will improve, even though it doesn't necessarily need to.

The only thing I didn't like was during the scene in the nurse's office; there was a part that gave off the wrong vibe. I know the background music was eerie because it appeared to Yuuta that Rikka magically knew about his Dark Flame Master persona, but the lack of a light-hearted tune made his physical abuse of her come across wrong (even though it was comedic violence). I think they would've been better off leaving that gag out, it wasn't really the right time to throw a joke in anyway. But when she started tearing up after he hit her on the head, it wasn't very nice to watch at all.

Or am I the only one who felt that way? Maybe I'm just overly-sensitive.

I'm a little disappointed. Though I knew it probably wouldn't be that way, the trailer apparently was misleading. However, there is room for optimism that this will be unusual and interesting. We'll see. Given the ratio of boys and girls (one boy, many girls) in the op/en I'm wondering if this will turn into a harem - I hope not.

It will most likely be a harem. I have no idea why you would expect otherwise.

This episode was great. With this kind of premise, you can be expecting a bunch of off the wall hi-jinx to follow in the coming weeks.
If people were actually expecting anything deep...lolwhat? I mean if the OP didn't cue you into what this show's gonna be like, I mean really...lolwhat?

I highly doubt it will be a harem. Aside from another one of the girls possibly liking him, it seems set to solely be a romantic comedy, particularly because of some of the interviews with the director that I've read.
