I started reading the first two chapters of the manga but never got through the rest, but I'm really intrigued by what this story is doing just from the first episode. It's definitely different from a lot of other shoujo anime because of what they're doing with Kai. A lot of male shoujo protects are shonen-like, in the sense that they actively want to be heroes and save the day. If someone's getting bullied, they're going to step in on their own accord. If someone's crying, they're going to be the ones who comfort them.

Kai is kind of like s conservative shoujo protagonist. He's a pull yourself up by your bootstraps type of guy. Obviously, the main theme this episode is he wasn't going to step in unless she asked for it. So definitely a different type of male love interest that we usually get, but it's not like what I'm used to seeing at least. If they're going for that type of character though, I actually thought Kai talked too much and was a bit too assertive. Like, he was way too aggressive in that library scene. There's a fine line between encouraging her to pull herself up and just appearing like an uncaring jerk. A male shoujo protagonist can never cross that line, because it defeats his entire purpose of being attractive to the audience.

I don't think they crossed the line, but it was close. In any case, definitely going to continue to watch.

CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZYYYY as cheesy could ever be. I mean, of course the main female is having socialising problems & she has ahuge crush on the main male on the first episode. And, of course, the main male absolutely offers to help her even though he has never seen her in his life.
What a new and innovative way to start a romance anime!!!
This is not to mention the subpar animation job that the studio gave this story.

How in the FUCK does this have such a low score one ep in. God I hate the anti shoujo bias on here. Peak drops and 1 ep in mfs wanna shit on it. This was such a good start, I’m already in love with Uka and Miura seems like a sweetheart.

I can see why this is was so highly anticipated, it might scratch that Kimi ni todoke itch for me! You can see the author was heavily influenced by that with even how we’re introduced to Uka and the bullies throwing her shoes away, etc. i just love when bullies are too stupid to realise they’re making themselves look bad with their bullying. Like how you gon make fun of Uka for not going to Shinsei when y’all dumbasses couldn’t even dream of it 😂 who cares why she’s ended up at this school, y’all all there together dumbass.

The art style looks so beautiful, animation was good and &team cooked with the OP and ED! I’m never going to complain about a story where we see a cute girl come out her shell, learn to be comfortable in her own skin and enjoy life. Uka deserves that very much! I’m hooked.

Simping for a random guy you meet on the street and give up going to the best school and settle for third rate school just to meet him again is crazy. Don't blame on your parents they only wanted best for you.

Fact that Ishimori was happy she got splashed first thing in the morning also damn..
Also too much second hand embarrassment.

The plot went very standard shoujo stuff with timid girl. When things start getting better they introduce bullies plot again. Felt bad for her (but then again why did you hijack your chance to a better school than for this bimbos one) but by the end it and she somewhat redeemed by splashing them with lemon soda as a return. Mmc saved the day as usual predictably.
Pretty formulaic, seen lot of hype about this let's see if it worth sticking around. Not 100% after first episode..

This was an amazing first episode its probably going to take a while for me to remember the names though. This show gives me very old school romance anime vibes. Or at least it don't feel modern which may be the art style or that it has very similar vibes to "Say I love you" I doubt it will progress that quickly though. Im assuming they'll probably end up together by the end of the show though I could be wrong.

Probably a top 5 of the season so far

I do feel for Uka with how she got bullied so much, hence the nickname "Stone", but it was nice to see her make a stand for herself and fight back at her bullies. Not only that, but Miura was there to help her out when she needed it. He gets straight to the point, but it does show how nice of a guy he is. =)

The production values seems to be pretty good and the OP/ED have a nice feel to it in terms of visuals and upbeat songs. It's not the strongest first episode that I've seen so far this season, but I do like it.

One thing that I will enjoy during the course of this series is how Uka will grow as a character. Hopefully it'll be a good one at that.

This anime reminds me a lot of Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai, with a mc boy helping and observing the mc heroine, but here, I can't find a real reason (from what I have watched from the episode 1, who would remind someone that you cross 5 seconds in the street ?). and the mc boy being cool because, he's cool.
It's not nice that the mc girl is being bullied, but, the bulling feel a little cliche here, with her old schoolmate being complete asshole and nobody react.

I don't think to be the target for this kind of anime, but I hope those who loves this kind of anime will appreciate it.

I understand JC Staff can't replicate the details in the manga, but this should be called Vanilla Soda instead. Kai was a lot more edgy and moody in the manga. Uka was fine, I guess, but she was supposed to plain and stoic.

Ok, the premise of the work is already clear, the protagonist is one of those shy ones who is bullied and has no confidence in herself and behold(which is quite sad, i mean it seems the bullying follows her everywhere she goes like a looping), the male protagonist will be her support point, making her have the willpower to act on things at the same time that she falls in love with him, I've seen hundreds of works like this so one more doesn't hurt to see lol, the character design is well drawn

also, kai reminds me of ash from banana vish(his visual)

First episode not up to my rather high expectations for it. Not digging the animation yet. Backgrounds are good, color palette okay, but characters do not look right or move right to me. But, that can happen with a new style and I might get to like it more when I get used to it. Story is okay so far, but the characters seem a bit too much caricatured to me, but that can change soon enough. Not digging that so much of the dialogue is inner monologue, but obviously that will change as relationships develop. I expect this show will improve for me, but I do not know if it will reach my expectations for it.
Maybe I am built a bit different than many shoujo fans. I see some hate above for A Condition Called Love, but I thought highly of that show, particularly the way they paced reveals of the backstories showing how the two MC came to be what they are, and their connections, and how much they each needed the other.

The last PROPER seasonal shoujo I remember watching on the top of my head was the Hananoi-kun one, and safe to say.. that shit was ASS. And while at first look, this looks kind similar to it, right off the bat, you can tell this is actually good, story wise... and production wise a bit as well. Not the craziest, but it definitely gives off that early 2000s shoujo anime feel to it, and that's thanks to J.C.'s experience in that kinda thing lol. Expected it to look A LOT more worse, considering what happened to DanMachi, but hey, doesn't look too bad... yet.

That out of the way though, I honestly didn’t expect this kind of dynamic between the MCs, but it works. They’re teenagers just starting high school, and their struggles, especially Ishimori’s, feel super real. Honestly, you can relate to them at any age. The way they solve their problems has this youthful vibe that fits perfectly. This episode felt like a whole story: good intro, solid pacing, and a nice wrap-up on a positive note.... but you can tell this definitely needs the eleven other episodes because in reality, Ishimori hasn’t really changed much, but those old classmates from her school kept calling her names. Her new classmates, though? They didn’t do that. Instead, they found those old guys annoying and even stood with the MC to back her up.

I did get annoyed with Ishimori. She spent so much time hiding, trying to be the perfect daughter and student, that she forgot to actually live her life. The bullying scenes hit hard and made me mad for her, but she didn’t seem to feel the same. It really shows how messed up that other group is. And no, I’m not calling the new group "amazing" or "perfect", that’s just normal. But I’m happy because shoujo anime rarely shows people like this or moments like these. (Also, love that they have a girl in their group!)

Yeah, this deserves to be the romance of the season, this is pretty good. Do think there's one or two other ones better, but for now, this is definitely up there.
@IzanaSolos Did you watch Kimi ni Todoke? it last season is pretty new (2024) and it is a great shojo.

Regarding this anime, yes, this seems to be a promising shojo and the bullying background and personal growth is pretty current and relatable.
Although fmc and mmc relationship appears to be pretty...toxic. Hope that doesnt go that route...but being a shojo it is a must, isnt it?

That was surprisingly good. The style is unique enough to not be mistaken for the next generic Highschool Romance, the soundtrack with the piano was used well and despite the setup being nothing too new, at least the male lead isn't just helping the female lead in the more simple way but tries to help her emotionally as well. People can call this simple all they want, but yeah, it's quite hard for a bullied person to stand up to their bullies or even ask for help. If they just rely on every one else to do the decision for them, they are just getting bullied once their friends aren't around.

@TheEasternModie That's not what Western people today want to hear about bullying. They think everything should be handed to them on a silver platter, including being saved. That's not how the real world works. There is no sympathy for laying down and being a victim.

Okay, so I went into "Honey Lemon Soda" expecting some bubbly, refreshing romance. Instead, I got a pretty flat soda.

The storyline felt super irrelevant. It just kind of meandered along, never really going anywhere. The plot was weak too – things happened, but they didn't really connect or build on each other. It felt like the writers were just throwing things at the wall and seeing what stuck.

And don't even get me started on the characters! They were all so one-dimensional. No real depth, no interesting backstories, just kinda... there. I never really connected with any of them, which made it hard to care about their "romance."

Overall, "Honey Lemon Soda" was a bit of a disappointment. If you're looking for a satisfying romance anime, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

My first thought when the episode started was, “This is beautiful”.
I liked how soft the colours they've used to make it so calm. Yup, that feeling of calmness really filled me.
The music sets the tone immediately and continues on with its loving feeling.
The art style is quite unique, very soft and cute.
I loved the scenes and the environment they created. It's really something I haven't seen before, at least it doesn't feel like it.
They really outdid themselves with setting the tone of each scene to fit perfectly with Uka’s emotion.
I didn't even get halfway through the episode before I thought HLS was amazing.
It made me feel something. I can't explain, but it's almost like a warm/sad/nostalgic sensation.
Am saying this again and I know I'm kind of repeating myself. But the music and the ambience they've created is absolutely stunning.
You could say I'm really excited for how this anime is going to evolve!

Such an ethereal soundtrack, very nice. First episode, eh, it's cute and has some nice art (great looking eyes). I don't need amazing animation in this, but it definitely could be better. Those two running to say hello in the beginning looked hilarious.

Her going to that school doesn't bother me at all, I can definitely see some star struck girl who's having self problems and was fairly indifferent about going to that prestigious school in the first place, be swayed like that lol

Cheesy end scene though, meh...

Not a bad first episode. It's directed with some sensibility and they seem to be handling the character of Kai well (he's obviously a good guy, but they're not beating you over the head with it). I think Uka might be a bit too much on the unbelievable side of awkward, so I hope they can tone it down and get her to the point that I can buy into her ability to have survived to this age in the first place.

Interested to see how this will go moving forward.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

You've convinced me: this first episode was absolutely charming and sweet. Ishimori fought back a bit by spraying his bullies with soda, and Miura's intervention to help was very much appreciated.

The odd detail of everyone having yellow eyes (probably related to the series title) is intriguing, and the character designs are appealing, making me think that all the students in Ishimori's class will get their moment in the spotlight.

Oh, I just know this is gonna be super cute. I'd read a lot of recommendations for this one in the shoujou subbreddit, and it didn't disappoint. I already love the two leads together. And I relate to her so much, it hurts. Not going outside of your bubble, just coasting along, not wanting to cause trouble, not standing up for yourself. I was crying with her! When she sprayed the honey lemon soda on the bullies, I cheered so much😭🥳. You go, girl!

This turned out much better than I was expecting, frankly. I like the two main leads greatly. All though the Female MC was just putting herself through Hell for no reason through most of the episode, it was so satisfying seeing her break this vicious cycle of self de-valuation. Those three idiots are absolute scum & cheered when they got soda sprayed on them. Seriously, the deserve so much worse, like sewage or pig slop because you know she isn't the only victim.

It seems the manga is serialized in Ribbon - a comic magazine for elementary to junior high school girls. The magazine celebrates its 70th(!) anniversary this year. Is this the most popular title that commemorates the anniversary? It feels kind of mediocre. (well, it's for little girls, and maybe adults should not complain about it.)

Nice to have a new shoujo anime this season, to me really it’s just romance but this exact type is one I get an itch for, and I think the last time that was scratched for me was “A Condition Called Love”, and I see that one getting shit in this thread, personally I liked that one a lot but this is looking even more promising form the start, it has really nice art and ost, and I think I’m really gonna like how Uka and Kai’s relationship develops from how this first episode went down, Uka is a beautiful babe too.

Yeah I will admit it was a bit cheesy, those bullies were basically textbook and were just mean for no reason pretty much, but I did like seeing them get blasted by Uka’s lemon soda lol, I wish we could have seen them drenched but it was still a great moment, and it was also the start of Uka changing herself for the better, I think they did a good job in the short time in making you feel for her, I can imagine how terrible she felt that her past was coming back to haunt her, but thankfully she’s got Kai to help her overcome it, although I did think the way he walked her through saying words was kinda odd, but these handsome husbandos of shoujo anime are usually not completely normal lol.

And the OP and ED both by &TEAM were really good, fun songs with great vibes, loved the visuals as well. And from here I’ll be wondering how the “Lemon Soda” becomes “Honey Lemon Soda”, the school is called Hachimitsu so maybe that’s it lol.

Poor Ishimori getting bullied. I have trouble getting in her head space though. I am not sure if it's just how the story is being told or I just don't relate as much to that kind of bullying.

I am not sure what I feel about Miura's personality right now. He's not very nice but he is kind and I've not had good experiences with these type of people in real life.

I'm not a fan of the whole trope going on here (cool boy saves reserved girl from bullies and they fall in love) cus I swear I see it everywhere, and so far this is kind of underwhelming and boring. I was getting a little annoyed with Uka for just standing there and not saying anything, but I understand that she's the way that she is because she was bullied, and I was pleasantly surprised when she poured soda on them cus I originally thought she was just gonna give the soda to Kai.

the animation is good, and I enjoyed the OP and ED since they're pretty fun and visually pleasing. I really wanna warm up to this anime so that the eye candy isn't the only thing I end up liking about it

First episode was okay. I was looking forward to this show since I like shoujo romances but honestly, the main girl annoys me to no end. I get that she's kind of supposed to since she wants to change but it was still pretty agonizing to watch.
