interesting story this episode. Love the way this series puts in the issues faced during this period of time into the stories. I honestly think Johnny's nerve endings are probably too damaged from the beatings he took or he met with something when he was younger.
Can't wait to see pt 2 next week.

Hmm Great episode, so they went to Chicago and he is one of the rare cases who can't feel pain but wasn't born like that or was in an accident that severed his nerves meaning he's an entirely different case... Hope Johnny can feel pain again, I know might be hard to understand but a little pain would keep him on his toes.

Either way I'm looking forward to finding out what is wrong with Johnny as well as who is this guy that is with Yabu (Hopefully he'll as the dude in the Vietnam arc)

Maybe it is a psychologist that is there to give it a look to BJ's PTSD.

Apparently this show ran out of original plots and just decided to have Black Jack jetting all over the world and sticking his nose into the biggest world events of the 60s even though he's a medical student in debt. Smells like bullshit to me but whatever.

Also, was that blonde girl supposed to be black? :/ Cause if she was then it looks like it's time for good ol' Japanese colourism.

Well this series is a Fan-fiction, it was not written by Tezuka, they just have permission to use the characters, this thing is not canon by any means.

And Johnny has blue eyes... XD.

Also people remember that this is a fan-fiction that uses Osamu Tezuka's characters, being this the case, i actually find it really rare that there is such a huge amount of normal noses (and hair styles).

I started watching this as a joke, some things were waaaaay too serious and did not match up with the character designs at all.

Then comes this weeks episode with the controversial topic and i was like "oh shit things are going to get REAL", and then the doctor takes off his mask and shows that noseeee

like i dont know if this show is trying to make me laugh or seriously contemplate things.

regardless its entertaining and im probably not going to drop it

Tbh the nose was only really distracting within the first few seconds. Got used to it pretty quick :p What a hot doctor ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Pretty obvious you just hate the show and are trying to just nitpick every little thing now.

So they're sending our MC to places where major events happened during the 60s are taking place, and? Right off the start you see students protesting the war in the first episode and in the third episode he ends up operating on a "deserter" who's being aided by anti-war activists. It's not like they've randomly started focusing on things that were happening during that time period, every single episode has had something to do with it.

As for how he's getting around even though he's in debt, it's pretty obvious if you've been paying attention. He was able to go to Vietnam with the help of the Cult from episode 2 since the leader is actually one of the "donors" who had his face changed to look like him. In this episode he was able to go to America because Maiko invited him to come along. She's probably there because of her internship and was able to invite someone to come with her.

This show has also gotten SO PREDICTABLE. Every plot point can be seen a mile away. Steve getting blown up by a mine last episode, this guy not being able to feel pain this one... It really removes all of the drama when you know exactly what's gonna happen in the first 30 seconds of seeing a character. This show is also so terrible at choosing who to make the villains of its episodes. People against the Vietnamese war, Vietnamese people, black people... There's also the fact that Americans are usually the heroes even though they're usually the ones causing most of the issues in the 60s, like... ok.

So did you figure out Steve was gonna die by stepping on a mine the moment his life was saved or when he was deliriously running through thick brush then making his way back to Bob while crying, thinking about eating food from back home and having sad music play during that one minute before he died? Also, obviously didn't focus on Johnny's injury and his late reaction to pain so that the audience knew something was wrong with him. Clearly not the case.

You know what would've been predictable? Had they just chosen to victimize every anti-war protester and black people while villianizing all the white people. This show does a really good job at having a neutral standpoint in these situations imo.

- We had the regular anti-war protesters.
- That one group of anti-war activists who were blinded by their ideals and used them to force Hazama into operating on the deserter.
- Bob the American soldier who was a respectable fellow until he was driving mad by the death of his last squadmate.
- The soldiers of the Vietcong who killed innocents and tortured Hazama & co.
- That one Vietcong soldier who risked his life by helping them escape.
- The Vietnamese villagers who allowed them to operate on Steve in their village only to have it bombed by Americans.
- The racist white people giving Johnny dirty looks but at the same time there were white people who didn't have any issues with him.
- The passive black protesters like Johnny and the other group of black people who resorted to violence.

Dam that turned out to be a longer response than I expected...

Calling this nitpicking, holy shit... Colourism is a really big issue all over the world but especially in anime. Think of all the animes there are where characters should be brown/black and they're not. Magi, Arslan... big major animes constantly whitewash characters. I mean it's whatever in a fantasy anime, you can just let it pass and breath out like "this isn't necessarily the middle east, I GUESS", but this episode is set in America in the 60s AND IS SPECIFICALLY ABOUT ANTI-BLACK RACISM. Making the one black woman in your entire episode noticeably paler than every black man is so shitty. There's also the fact they drew the black men with black features but the black woman is just a copy/paste of the other female faces we've seen in the show and then they coloured her skin slightly darker. This ain't got SHIT to do with the damn artstyle, my god, please actually think before you speak, especially when you gonna just brush racism aside with this strawman "people have big noses in this show" bullshit.

And before anyone comes in here like "it's Japan, it doesn't matter!", BLACK PEOPLE EXIST IN JAPAN. THERE ARE BLACK JAPANESE PEOPLE. Just look at Miss Japan 2015, better yet research her story and read about her growing up half-black in Japan.

Yes, it is nitpicking. You know why? Because people don't go into a freaking anime and pull out the colorism card just because of one female character, who's presumed to be black, is a lighter shade than the black men so far after 1 episode of the arc. For all we know she may be of mixed race. As for her features, did you want them to give her an afro or something? That's basically the defining feature of all the black males in this show other than their skin tone.

This sorta shit is the excuse people always pull outta their ass for female characters always being younger, paler and having the same features as each other... When it happens in almost every anime, it's not nitpicking. This happens ALL THE DAMN TIME. But the fact that this show is actually trying to be realistic and about civil rights? Yeah, that makes it way worse.

They do have a point you know.

Its because so-called "black" characters are like a small trope in Anime, and any Anime (like Basquashi!) that isn't focusing primarily on that trope that won't have any well-designed black characters. His point lies within that.

So there is the problem here is; for the only plot-significant tritagonist characterization of a black female they sure as hell should've mader her skin more darker, vibrant, changed her hair colour to anything but blond, and given her a nose that actually exists within the 3rd dimension, like how a characterization of an actual black girl should be. Right now she just looks like a tan-white girl/black girl with some identity issues.

Besides that, I agree with you on the rest.

It's like people don't know that this is based on a Tezuka manga (well, manga based on a Tezuka manga)

Yeah it was a bit weird how Taira was an intern, considering she's supposed to be black? Or maybe she's supposed to be Latina? A bit hard to tell with the color choice, but I assumed she was black. Other than that, another good episode, and glad it's a multi-part episode. 1-ep stories are just too short, and I'm used to the 50min stories from the OVA.

While I dig how the story tackles a lot of controversial topics throughout history, I'm pretty tired of how Hazama's always looked down upon for being a medical student despite his talents. If they'd stop mentioning that, that'd be great lmao

I'd say that not being able to feel pain is more of a perk when he's doing what he's doing but I guess that he can't rely on the doctors to patch him up forever.
