Ahh yes, I was a part of the Tumblr fandom who stayed up from 8:00 PM to 5:30 AM-ish to find out what this announcement was. Tbh I'm still delirious with lack of sleep but I was too excited to keeps sleeping anyways.

2014 is really the best year.

I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm still very happy!
I do wonder about the plot though. At the end of season 1 there wasn't really any more conflict left to resolve, which means some sort of new conflict or challenge has to be introduced, right?
Maybe it will feature more swimming competitions and a set of rivals, would be happy to see it. I also wonder what will happen with Rin, I suppose he will still be a rival character? Can't wait to see if Rei will get to join a competition this time :D Overall very excited!

Oh shit, I didn't know about these two. Thanks a lot. I'm glad Tamako Market won't be getting a second season.

Well, it still depends if KyoAni properly adapt that LN or not. Kyoukai no Kanata went really shit when they added some unnecessary original things. I'm not sure but I heard half of the series was their original idea and not actually from the light novel. Anyways, this is actually something new. Never seen a KyoAni HAREM series. I hope it does not fail.

Anyhow, while taste is obviously subjective and all, the general consensus on MAL seems to be that not moe = good, so perhaps this can give you hope that something more to your liking will be animated by them soon.
I have no complains about moe series. K-ON was a moe series yet I loved it because of the great characters and heartwarming conclusion. You can also call Tamako Market a moe series but it was shit because the characters were weak and really.. nothing happened all throughout the series. It could've been a bit better if they gave us a romance conclusion. So yeah, the "not moe = good" thingy is bullshit. As long as the series is entertaining then it is definitely good.

Hurray. Another "cute swiming boys doing cute things" season. Can't wait. Just wished there would've been more competition and tournament stuff. And hopefully Glasses-kun doesnt get kicked out of the team.

But I'm curious about the plot. Things seemed pretty resolved? I wonder if they'll come up with a new conflict. Or maybe more tournaments. That'd be awesome.

Why does every single anime Kyoani make have to be either moeshit or fujoshit? it's just sad.

It's not like anybody cares about the overall quality of what they do anymore at this point. They do there thing with the animation and the fanservice, people praise it and get all worked up over it only for things to turn out at best mediocre and the cycle continues next season and I swear the overall anime watching audience shrinks just a little bit more for it. Also haters and such as the most hardcore of the hardcore will attest to if you're critical of anything they do...but yeah Kyoani is basically just a modern day myth at this point and a rallying point for people to get either really hyped up over or to poke fun, or just to try and tell them what they should be doing instead all while the actual gems and overall package shows go kind of unnoticed around them.

Personally I'll be sticking with Ace of Diamond for my sports watching needs since I prefer traditional character and game focused sports anime to male on male fanservice and the occasional nod to the idea that a show is supposed to be about characters on a swim team and how they approach their hobby and try to get better at it. This show made no secret of it the first time around, it is what it is. Fujoshi and Yuri focused anime are clearly on the rise and they have their audience which has totally different motivations for what they watch and like than I do for the most part so it pretty much stands little to no chance at impressing me anyway much like the first season, especially considering I'll hopefully have more meaty things to focus on by then that are actually enjoyable beyond just the niche fanservice and lame desperately unfunny comedy they provide which is basically Kyoani's calling card as far as I'm concerned though they're of course far from the only ones.

Reverb_Shock said:
Sigh..... Time for KyoAni to make a mockery of my favorite sport again.

Swimming is one of my favorite summer pass times and it was kind of unfortunate to see Kyoani indeed make something of a mockery of it, but then I feel they make a mockery of just about any idea they approach at the best of times anyway cause their focus is so much on pleasing otaku rather than telling a good story with interesting well realized characters in it and they just cannot seem to do comedy well despite insisting on making it a major part of every idea for a show they attempt so things always end up being portrayed kind of awkwardly if sort of pleasing to the eye depending on your taste in visuals.

One thing I will say though is that on another forum I sometimes frequent one of the posters was a serious aspiring swimmer that was hoping to vie for international competition some day that would make a list of all the things that Free got wrong about the sport of competitive swimming each week and it'd usually be a pretty long one. Basic things like diet, how the swimmers got into proper starting position and/or regularly failed too, how the swimmers fell in the water as well as the realism of the times they were being clocked at or failed to be clocked at each lap, how the swimmers performed the rotation each lap and where their form was wrong......I mean for a studio that is supposed to pride itself on the utmost attention to the smallest detail, at least according to it's most ardent fans and supporters, I couldn't believe how much the show apparently got wrong that even I wouldn't have noticed without an expert to point them out....not that it was ever a major focus to begin with which is again my biggest problem with Free. If they truly cared about attention to detail and the sport of swimming itself they would have had an expert on staff like most authors of sports anime/manga get in order to consult on these matters to make sure they are doing justice by the sport and it's fans.

Honestly if the show just dropped all pretense of being a swimming anime next season and they just focused on the usual assortment of stock SoL situations like most Kyoani shows with the requisite episodic nod to the male anatomy the show would probably be that much better off for it. At least it'd give people less grounds to criticize it harshly on for falsification of premise.

You just answered your own question. Harder to write for and maintain quality of storytelling, less money to be made, same reason why a lot of studios have abandoned the whole good old fashioned storytelling approach for 4Koma and Light Novel templates. TV anime, especially during off seasons like Winter and Summer is largely about having the right skin and package and hitting the right niche demographics nowadays, not telling complete stories or tackling issues the characters face as an ongoing narrative. The shows that are supposed to be the counter to this approach sadly seem to fall into a lot of the same pitfalls at least from where I'm sitting so yeah TV anime continuing to not look so good when it comes to Winter and Summer.

Ditto. Why risk putting effort on a series than could flop than using an existing formulaic approach. Who doesn't love a money-making machine?

Nowadays anything that comes out on MAL will get bashed anyway regardless of what it is.
bla bla bla
The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.
