Yes, finally the continuation of this epic battle and I wasn't disappointed! Lots of action and great strategies.

Damn, that Maus was really something. It really made a dent into their team. It's unbelievable how outnumbered they are. If wonder if Nishizono can really beat her sister like this. Looking forward to the conclusion!

The Maus hits the Mallard !

We all saw the scene where the Panzer VIII Maus shot the Renault B1 bis at
point-blank range.

The Mallard team (commander=Sodoko, driver=Gomoyo, radio=Pazomi) got
knocked backwards and their tank ended up upside-down.

The reality is a bit different.

Type of gun: 12.8 cm Pak 44
Mass of projectile: Maybe 26.4 kg to 28.3 kg
Muzzle velocity: 935 m/s
Mass of Renault B1 bis: 28000 kg

To figure out what happens when the projectile hits the tank, you use momentum
conservation. One assumption is that the projectile hits the tank and sticks to it.
However, the worst possible case is that the projectile bounces back with the
same speed as before. This doubles the momentum that is transferred. So the
equation is:

2*(28.3 kg)*(935 m/s) = (28000 kg)*v

The answer is: v = 1.9 m/s

So, right after it gets hit, Sodoko's tank could be sliding backwards at as much as
1.9 m/s.

A reasonable assumption, given such a slow speed, is that it skids backwards and
comes to a stop. The coefficient of friction between metal tank tracks on pavement
is hard to estimate, but perhaps 0.3 is in the right ballpark.

The acceleration is: a = 0.3*9.8 = 2.94 m/s^2

v^2 = 2 * a * d where v = 1.9 m/s

The result: d = 0.61 m

So, basically, the most violent thing that could possibly happen is that the tank
holding the three Discipline Committee girls slides backwards by 0.61 m.

There is nowhere near the amount of momentum transfer that would be necessary
for their tank to flip over backwards.

As I recall, Director Tsutomu Mizushima told people that he was willing to correct
any technical mistakes for when the Blu-ray comes out. So I guess we could ask
him to cut out that epic scene and replace it with the B1 bis simply sliding
backwards by 0.61 m. On the other hand...

@okanagan: I think it's alright as it is. They should focus on minor errors to fix and not whole scenes. Besides, I think if this is reality, the Char B1 Bis should have been destroyed by now. But this is the GuPverse, the tank is protected by "carbon coating" so that tank crews will be safe when hit.

Maho really stole the show for me, I was totally impressed with how she handled herself. Although, since Hitomi Nabatame is one of my favorites, I have a soft spot for Erika. My favorite scene is at 16:50 when the Hetzer is seen sneaking up again, Maho calmly orders someone to deal with it. :)

Isn't the main gun on the Maus the same one as on the Jagdtiger?

How did the Maus get past the tanks it shot up? The Maus is in a narrow street, and shot up Duck Team. At 21:06, Duck Team's upside down tank is clearly blocking the street. The Maus is too big to pass another tank in that space, let alone one that's upside down in the middle of the street. But at 21:37, the Maus just rolls by the Duck.

The oversized Maus should have been trapped. That's a continuity error, and an important one. Especially since that scene from Kelly's Heroes a few episodes back, where a Tiger gets caught in a narrow lane, which foreshadows this scene.

These girls are strong:

I can see the big improvement of the animation quality, however the story become more oblivious of some minor plot hole, perhaps it was caused by some scene that is lost during the editing. For example, the non-existence of rope detaching scene after they crossed the river.

Magito said:

No, I think that's the rear guard Panzer that chase the Turtle team into the woods. The one that lured them probably a different panzer.

but seriously, who keeps telling them to pursuit an enemy under clear numeric disadvantage?? :/

But that's the basic of battle strategy when you're outnumbered.
Chip the enemy force little by little while maintaining mobility. Even if it's just one tank.
Besides, they don't want to lose the strategic advantages of their team high mobility, if someone could pinpoint their moves and destination, the enemy with the higher firepower would simply overwhelm their team. Just like the Maus trap.

I can't even think about the Tiger scene in Kelly's Heroes without starting to
cry !

If there is anybody who has not seen the excellent Wikipedia article about the
Panzer VIII Maus, it is worth a very careful read.

However, one thing was never made clear. What would be the tactical
situation in which a Maus was intended to be used?

For example, was it designed for use in close-quarters fighting in an urban
environment ? ? ?

Maho never even saw the Hetzer.

She just heard the sound. Based on that, she knew that it was at her 7-o-clock.
She only turned her head slightly to the left before giving the order.

That scene is a beautiful illustration of Maho's remarkable skill at Senshado.

That is correct. It is the 12.8 cm PaK 44 L/55

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12.8_cm_PaK_44

However, Hitler saw the wooden mockup and said that the 128 mm gun was
too small, and he wanted them to up-gun it to 150 mm. Based on that, it
would be legitimate for Kuromorimine to use the larger gun on their Maus.

The road is not as narrow as it seems. The road is able to occupy two tanks side by side when the Oarai team entered it. Also, The Maus slightly turned to the right when passing the Mallard's Char B1 Bis.

the Maus actually has several disadvantages. It COULD move at 20 km/h on road but it would be pushing its abilities and it wont be doing that for long. the thing would go 12 km/h off terrain. The maus is slow and the turret is DAMNED slow. It can be easily outmaneuvered, hell even its turret could be outmaneuvered while its aiming in your general direction and its 128mm cannon is a poor gun given its armor (as mentioned previously here). nothing to scoff at ofcourse but doesnt quite deserve the credit one would at face value.

But thats the brilliance of this trap. ThThey had them enter an alley way to limit their movements so the maus had time to put in a few shots. They lost 2 out of 7 tanks. A huge loss. Even if it doesnt get to do anything else to them, The maus has done its job and lets not forget it has the backup of a smaller faster tank which limits our team trying to engage it withstrategies concerning out-maneuvering it.

Its seriously softened them up for the main force to take care of.

Simply running away from the Maus sounds like a good idea. The prototype
was extremely slow. The engine was not powerful enough, apparently.

One way of thinking about the Maus is that it is a very heavily armoured
128 mm stationary gun. So you simply decide to locate it in some place, and
the large open region surrounding it is then denied to the enemy. I don't
understand why Maho didn't choose to deploy it in this way.

So far, the Maus has fired five rounds. It was only designed to carry 32 rounds.
The girls won't have to wait long before the Maus is out of ammo.

i dont know, a large open region would mean they have plenty of space to out meneuver it, its gun is extremely slow.

They seem to have purposely set up this trap preemtively where our team couldnt escape fast enough before the maus got a few shots in atleast.

the Stug team really should have left the hubris and just run for it.

And as i mentioned, the maus has the other tank to support it if they try to outmeneuver it, if they try to go for it, its fast and it has the maus to shield it and defend it. If they try to dance with the maus, they have it to counter them and the maus defending itself. Black Forest has already considered the weaknesses of the Maus.

Right. The Maus would be unable to do anything about tanks who wanted to
cross the space around it. However, there would be a 3000-yard radius where
enemy tanks would not be able to come to a halt. This would limit their
freedom to some degree. I can't see how else to employ the Maus.

its gun is extremely slow.

Right. Anyways, for one World War II tank to hit another WWII tank in motion
was not expected. So I am not sure that rate-of-traverse would be an issue
except in close-quarters fights. I guess that the rate-of-fire of the Maus
was low. Again, that would not be an issue if its purpose was just to deter
stationary targets within its kill circle.

They seem to have purposely set up this trap preemtively where our
team couldnt escape fast enough before the maus got a few shots in
at least.

You could be right. If you position the Maus in plain sight, everybody is going
to see it. So nobody will approach it. The Maus can't quickly move. Therefore,
it is not likely that the Maus is going to be scoring kills. It only denies territory.

Like you say, positioning the Maus in the city opens up some possibilities.
However, the only great advantage of the Maus is its ability to kill Ooarai's
Porsche Tiger. Ooarai's other tanks have thin armor that could be penetrated
by most of Kuromorimine's tanks. Perhaps Kuromorimine was particularly
scared of the Tiger since it could take out their flag tank with just one shot.

the Stug team really should have left the hubris and just run for it.

Right. Miho's "retreat" order came just 36 seconds after the very first glimpse
of the Maus.

Miho did the right thing. However, the Mallard team and the History team did
not comply. Hence they were killed.

Miho's greatest weakness as a commander is that her troops sometimes don't
follow her. That almost lost them the fight against Pravda. Patton said that he
wanted his troops to fear him more than they feared the Germans.

In the St. Gloriana fight, the Rabbit Team panicked and abandoned their
still-functional tank. Miho should have arbitrarily picked one of the six girls,
charged her with abandoning her post under fire, and had her shot the
same day. That would not have won Miho friends, but it had to be done.

Black Forest has already considered the weaknesses of the Maus.

Agreed. Maho never does anything stupid.

Shot? Come on, senshado is sports not military, man.
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Early in the series, during the fight against St. Gloriana, Miho told Saori that
the inside of the tanks was coated with "carbon" so as to protect them.

I have always assumed that this unspecified "carbon coating" had the ability to
prevent projectiles entering the crew compartment. It would prevent spalling
as well.

So, based on that, I assumed that the 128-mm projectile had to bounce off
the B1 bis.

It is horrible to contemplate what would actually happen if a Char B1 bis got
hit by one of those 128-mm projectiles at point-blank range. However, as I
explained above, the tank would certainly not flip over backwards.

Alright, the Maus is perhaps too slow to be a flag tank but the other tanks are about as fast as a Tiger and yet they have better guns and more armor.

Well, this is the final round whicj your enemy will probably bring out everything they got.

I think Maho feels safer to command the flag tank by herself no mater what model it is. Moreover, with her skill and her team, it not that Ooarai can easily come and destroy her tank.

Miho probably think the same so she makes her Panzer 4 the flag tank this time.

Nice use of infiltration tactics from the rear to disrupt enemy positions. Even better was Miho's effecting a breakthrough from enemy encirclement while using that tactic.

Black Forest's troubles closely mirror the mechanical unreliability of WWII Germany's tanks at certain times. Especially the early Panthers. Not to mention fuel and ammunition limitations when the tide of war had already turned against them.

It's risky as hell, but good commanders never squander their personnel (and equipment). Exceptional teamwork by Oarai for this battle, and a good display of athleticism by Miho. Despite the setbacks, Black Forest still kept an ace up their sleeve - and that's what made them truly formidable.

From the moment the enemy Panzer III started retreating I knew it had to be a trap. Boy, what a trap indeed - the enemy super-heavy Maus tank that, if this were a game, would be a good contender for final boss status.

Time for the finale. The odds are overwhelmingly stacked against them once again. Will the goddess of victory smile again upon these girls?

That Maus is so badass! It seems to be invulnerable!

The Maus had a lot of weaknesses, though, so I'm sure the girls will defeat it. >:)

I wonder if they didn't make a mistake with the number of tanks Maho has at her disposal.

20 is the maximum per the rules

3 where taken out. So they have 17 left.

If i did count correctly, we see 14 (not 15 as mentioned in an earlier thread) in that last V-formation.

So 3 are somewhere else.

The Maus and the Panzer III in the city makes 2, so only 1 left.

The scouting tank, assuming it's not the one in the city, is the last one.

If i didn't forget one, it does work out. If there are 15 in the V-formation, the scout tank and the one i n the city would have to be same for it to work.

And all tanks have to be working, so they already repaired the various tracks. They also can't have another tank hanging around in the back or something like this.

It's probably correct, because that would be a major mistake, one that you don't miss that easily when you plan the story, but it's close..
