No, Ah-Dou (a former high concubine from season 1) is not his sister.
Besides Basen (first appearance EP6) Gaoshum has
If you mean Lahan, the accountant guy, he is Lakan's adopted son and biological half nephew.

@LordCrueltyV ymmm i was joking....It turns out that half of the people here are more or less related to each other, that's why I wrote that it will turn out someday that Jinshi has a sister, etc. It was a joke English is not my language so it could be misunderstood

Tad bizarre Jinshi's noted to look like the deceased Emperor when Maomao noted how much he looks like Ah-Duo. Regardless, this episode shows that it can go an entire episode without the main character, and still be quite phenomenal.

The pacing of these last few episodes did well to remind me why Apothecary Diaries is one of the best historically-inspired anime that i've seen. Its not really a high bar, to be clear, a less competent and more generic show would've cut straight from Maomao's kidnapping to the action of her freeing herself or being rescued.

Yet Apothecary Diaries maintains its slowburn pacing, because it understands the limited speed of the flow of information that characterizes the pre-modern societies it is inspired by. The credit here goes of course to the novel author, but also to those behind the adaptation, who weren't afraid of maintaining the course in the visual medium.

Way too often modern writers, both western and eastern, seem to give up actually writing things that make internal narrative sense and instead default to throwing action scenes and dopamine hits at your face and demand you say it's good. Its why you get shit like Rings of Power's teleporting armies that just pop into and out of existence as the plot demands it. Maybe it wasn't worth naming Amazon's garbage to elucidate Apothecary Diaries' well written story, but i hope it gets the point across.

Every time i think this anime has peaked, it punches me in the gut and says "who said we were done" and i hope it keeps that way.

Gyokuyou having a stable labour still holds everyone on their throats, even with the breech birth avoided thanks to Maomao's treatments. But this has been 10 days since her disappearance, and Gaoshun having new information about the missing eunuch, who apparently went to the graveside of the Emperor's deflowered to pray for the deceased, an old woman of Shenlu, however, reaccounts something different about Jinshi and even knowing something about him enough to almost poison and oust herself before he could lose composure. The fact of her insult against Jinshi being the illegitimate child of the Emperor and trying to rid himself of that position, all for it to come back haunting to him. For her to be praying to Taihou, one of the lady-in-waitings who attended the seemingly insignificant ghost story session with Maomao and Xiaolan, everything is slowly connecting together, to Concubine Loulan, enough for Jinshi to confront her.

Everything about Loulan and her setting being of the cunning fox, Jinshi being able to mark all of them within a space of time, even figuring out that one of the servants was disguising as Loulan, the full-on investigation didn't bear any fruit anymore since she was committing a serious crime in all of this by leaving the rear palace without any aforementioned word. Of course, with Lakan knowing the fact enough to rescue his own daughter out of his overprotective goofiness, and the fact that things within the rear palace are thrown into chaos with missing people like Shishou, there seems no way out of this...until Kan Lahan shows up and provides irrefutable evidence to Jinshi, prompting a further thorough look-through into the matter.

Everything is connected...though where it leads to, is anyone's guess...

@FiendishChan

I think they are also trying to recruit Maomao to their side. When Suirei offered knowledge of the false death revival medicine, it was a bid for Maomao's alliance. It doesn't look like they are treating her roughly in the rebel town.
@Khashishi that is true. Gaoshun also said something something keep Maomao on our side

Another great episode!

Jinshi is desperate to find Maomao that he lost his cool.
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Brother brother, I've been out of my mind since watching this episode! When Jinshi shouted "Where is Maomao?" - Oh my god, my chest was pounding! At that moment, my heartbeat was crossing 280, really! When even a cool person like Jinshi breaks down like this, it's clear how special Maomao is to her! Lakan's incredibly smart entry, Loulan-Shisui's backstory, everything came together like a fire, brother! The hints that were given in every episode of this series are all blasting together here! I have only one thing - if you don't cry in an episode like this, then you're a stone! And one more thing, can someone suggest me a good speaker? Because Jinshi's shouting has blown my speaker - fix my speaker plz!

Idk if i will get a reply but can someone please help me understand this episode?:
Spoiler alert all down for those who havent watched this ep :-
So to confirm now loulan and shisui are the same person? And loulan used to sneak out and then be shisui?
And whatever jinshi saw about loulan and her dad what was it really after seeing the taiho’s grave and WHO IS TAIHO?!
If i am assuming right loulans dad is the heir to the throne cause he cant see red, right? And he is trying to kill jinshi and slowly the whole rear/inner palace or outer whatever through his daughters? Taiho was the one who told the ghost stories and was a victim of previous king pedo shit so but taiho carried the kids of some other noble and they were shisou and soushi? (Sorry if I misspelled the sisters names)

@SinLegend
Yes, Loulan is Shisui.
Taihou was the lady in waiting for a concubine that was sent to the palace from the Shi clan. Taihou gave birth to the daughter that was exiled with the doctor during the pedo-emperor's reign. While the daughter and doctor were exiled, Taihou was forced to stay in the rear palace until she died, which just happened some time after the ghost story episode.
Answering anything else will be a spoiler that is explained later. If you want spoilers now you can just look up Shishou's wiki page and the characters he's connected to.

We see in this episode that Jinshi is quite perceptive himself, catching out Shenlü and Loulan's body double. It's nice seeing him take such strong action for his beloved Maomao's sake. I did feel a little sorry for Renpu though, she did get yelled at out of nowhere.

And now it's pretty much confirmed that the Shisui = Loulan theories were correct. I'm curious to learn her motives for infiltrating the Rear Palace, along with her sister Suirei and how exactly they're related to Taihou (ghost story lady).

I also wasn't expecting Lakan to have an adopted son, things are certainly getting interesting...

@SinLegend The fake eunuch is Suirei and no, she's too young to be the exiled daughter.

The exiled daughter incident is why the rules were changed and Maomao's adoptive father, Luomen, was forcefully castrated to help deliver Anshi's baby, the current emperor. The current emperor is around 35~, making the exiled daughter even older than that.

Lol at everyone losing their minds over Xiaomao's kidnapping while she's most likely chilling at that inn in Suirei's village/town.
Also, this is the second time they bait us with Gyokuyou's imminent childbirth. Not cool, man :/

Nice! Finally an episode that made me feel a certain level of investment while watching it. Last time this happened being with the "colored doors" episode from many weeks ago.
This said, having an entire episode focused on Jinshi playing the detective role for once was truly refreshing and though some of his conjectures seemed kinda contrived, it all still felt more natural than having Xiaomao instantly solving cases because the plot gifts her with the knowledge of 10 lives.

I’ve only just noticed this, but why does the late emperor, who is Jinshi’s biological grandfather, look so similar to Ah-duo, Jinshi’s biological mother? It’s going to be wild, but I have a theory, so let’s begin:

The late emperor had a baby with Anshi’s (the Empress Dowager’s) previous lady-in-waiting, Suiren, who is Ah-duo’s mother. This would make Ah-duo the current emperor’s half-sister. The story never hints or mentions who Ah-duo’s father is, but the resemblance between the late emperor and Ah-duo is striking—not as much as between the late emperor and Jinshi, but still close. Since Suiren was so close to the imperial family, it wouldn’t be too wild to assume this happened. Both Ah-duo and the current emperor were raised together by Suiren and later had a baby, Jinshi. Additionally, Ah-duo holds some power within the palace.

But which one is her real name? Since if Suirei is her sister then Shisui makes more sense than Loulan

Oh my god, Mao Mao’s real father, Rakan (yes, we’ll stick with the Arabic pronunciation), is angry? I’ve never seen him like this—not in season one, nor in this season.

Jinshi has become terrifying, showing his cleverness and capabilities. Consort Rouran is no joke either—I think we all agree she’s actually Shisui, right? Do you think the same?

Let’s keep watching! On to Episode 19 comments!

I like how Lakan's adoptive son is just like his dad, similar to Maomao with Luomen.

Absolutely flabbergasting. Shenlu figures out that he's the emperor's brother instantly. Loulan ISN'T LOULAN. Lakan has an adopted son that has a dog like manner. My mind is spinning with all the crazy things happening right now. The fact that all of this stuff just weaved together so smoothly is astounding to me. Suirei would go to the graveyard, where they find Shenlu and makes us realize that nobody expect the elders really know about the late emperor. To find more info, they go to Loulan, but Jinshi realizes that she ain't Loulan, and just another lady-in-waiting. This explains why she barely talked and was just silent throughout the entire show. Then after Lakan crashed out over Maomao being gone, Lahan bartered his research on the rise of material prices to discount the fixing of his dad's destruction. It's not just the things that happened this episode. It's HOW they happened. Truly amazing.

Damn, the plot just keep thick-ing and it won't stop. SO MANY CONSPIRACIES. I truly wonder how far back it goes. And now the thing with Loulan and the feifas. Though the first thing thst comes to mind is some type of coup or invasion. I mean, why would would you want such weapons. Ah, what am an amazing episode. I can't wait to find out more. Though it seems that we're going to Maomao's part next episode, which is a bit of a letdown. But we'll see what we learn from that.
