I didn't consider myself to be a real fan until I completed 200.
I consider most people with 100 to still be new to it. Compared to my almost 600 completed, I suppose it makes sense.
It depends who you're comparing your list to.

I don't see how it makes sense to name a specific number of shows you have to have watched to be called a fan. You could watch and love a single show and call yourself a fan and that would be fine. It would only make some level of sense if you're thinking that to be a fan you need to be able to recognize stereotypes, tropes, be familiar with VA's, studios, writers, etc. But I don't think that much is necessary.

You're a "real" anime fan the moment you decide that you're, well, an anime fan. It's not a title that has to be earned.

I heavily disagree. Depending on which shows you watch that may very well not be true. If every show you watched had an average score of above 7.5, which would be any show in the top 1500. You're likely to have a mean score of above 8. I have watched maybe ten shows that were above rank 1000, and probably like 20 of the top 100, as such I have a lot of 9's, more than average 10's and a good amount of 8's with some 7's and a few below. I've watched about 73 days worth of anime which is about 200 titles and my mean score is 8.29. It's not that I grade easily, but rather I drop something if I don't like it early on and only finish shows that I think I will like a lot or I hear are phenomenal. So no you don't have to be below 8 to be a real anime fan. You have to be below 8 to be a critic or very unselective about what you watch

Being a real anime fan is not something that can be defined by just watching 1000 series. No, you are only a real anime fan when you are completely devoted to the medium.. aka by fapping to 2D girls in the daily basis :)

You can consider yourself an anime fan since the moment you watch some of them and you like what you're seeing.

There'll be people who will tell you that animes' fan are those who have watched at least "put a random number here" of series.
There'll be people that will judge you because you only have watched mainstream animes.
Screw them both.

of course enjoyment is the most important factor when it comes to entertainment, anime is just that, its entertainment, its Japanese cartoons, not a life lesson

Enjoyment is the most important thing. That's why reality TV shows are so ubiquitous on the television. They provide what is the essential, that's for sure.

EcchiLordMamster said:
and as an example, what the fuck does it matter to you how acclaimed an anime is if you think its boring af?

It matters not. I even tend to judge more severely the mainstream titles overhyped by everyone. To have higher standards improves your rational views on things. How can you be receptive to more complex stuff if you stay in your bubble, always enjoying the same ass shots and boob shots thrown at you, as a poor excuse of a scenario full of beaten to death tropes unfolds?

EcchiLordMamster said:
why are you wasting your time watching shows you think are shit? if you're not enjoying the show it shouldn't matter whether or not you tried something new, don't like it, don't watch

... no one is forcing anyone to watch anything, all you guys do who continue to watch anime you don't like is help give the shows free publicity and views

Oh, the whole "if you don't like it, why are you watching it?". The same kind of thesis I read from the hive mind. Well, it makes sense if the anime at hand is an obscurity. Why would I watch a piece of shyt that none cares about?

On the other hand it changes completely when it's a popular entry and you know why? It's exactly because it's all the rage amongst the community. If I don't watch it, how can I discuss about it and feel entitled to tell it's shit? If I don't do it, the likes of you reeking with bad faith reply "pfft, you haven't even watched it entirely anyway". Also, to perform an autopsy on an anime I detest by identifying all its flaws allows to better understand myself as a spectator. Breaking it down is sometimes even more enjoyable than watching the anime itself.

EcchiLordMamster said:
and even when they don't play it safe, people still bitch and whine constantly, so that doesn't necessarily matter

Woah dude. Great way to think. Let's give up on everything. What's the point of trying?
Let's just appeal to the lowest common denominator instead.

Despite the fact that you talk a big game you have no game compared to Ecchi Lord Mamster who has my utmost respect in this community. Maybe you should watch a few ecchi titles before you JUDGE IT like some asshat. Also you should know it is not actually that mainstream to know so many ecchi titles. Do you know what is mainstream? Attack on Titan, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop,Ghibi Movies like Princess Monoke, Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, Future Diary, One Piece, Bleach, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Maybe Love Live, Haruhi, and K-On. Some are less mainstream than others.

Extensive Moe, Ecchi, Shoujo Ai, Shonen Ai, Yuri, Yaoi, or Hentai Knowledge is very rare. Shonen knowledge is a dime a dozen. Other genre specialists? Not so much. I mean sure, there are people who congregate visibly who love the "sexy genres" online and in person. But how many of those people do you really think have seen everything or read lots of things? Believe it or not... not many.

Look at my list! I have watched so many things nobody cares about! But I have also watched a lot of porn! And there is a TON of crossover!

And through the process I have learned a lot about judging an anime by the merits that are presented. But Neon Genesis Evangelion, Oniisama E, and a lot of other more "substance anime" are still my favorite. But I think I gained a lot of respect for other genres. Like I really adored Chu Bra. I think it really had a strong message of body positivity I just did not expect from an anime like that. I love Golden Boy because the protag is just so lovable and you really root for him. I love Video Girl Ai because I cry every time with the protag. It really is a star crossed lovers romantic story.

There really are some fantastic gems in the genre.

And with Hentai I just don't see how anyone couldn't love Urotsukidouji or End of Summer but I guess it comes down to personal preference. haha! That is how porn is!

And not every ass shot is the same as proven with a really well done one like Keijo. You really come to appreciate something like that when you see it done badly in other series. The art of effective titilation is actually very difficult. And at the same time making the characters likable and developed. I actually think Keijo did a better job telling it's sports story and balancing character development at the same time than Yuri on Ice and I LOVED Yuri on Ice and thought believe it or not despite the criticism the animation was actually good and that the expressions on each character was very nice. And it helps it is animated by my favorite animator! XD

I even watch really bad anime on purpose like Cipher the Video. I think it is really fun. It is especially fun to play it at anime club every couple years and inflict it on newbies who have never seen it but great for people who have too so they can sing along.

Maybe you just.... don't understand the cheese factor enjoyment anime has. It is special. I think this is why I love 80's and 90's OVA so much. It is so much fun. Lowest common demomenator and ruining anime my ass. They wont even put out what I like on DVD! I have this huge VHS collection. I am so silly. I love Moldiver for goodness sake. So few people faved that you know? Yet here I am, loving Moldiver.

Yeah some of us like anime because it is cheesy and fun. Others like it because it can be a more serious cartoon. I mean my fave genres are scifi and drama. But yeah... I kinda like when the drama is over the top and silly. But don't get me wrong, I like a good pulpy scifi too. Like Captain Harlock. Why do I like it though? Harlock turns me on so much. XD He is a good man and that is hot.

You're telling this to a member of the garbage connoisseurs club, who has watched Eiken in all its godawful glory, among other things. Your point? It was a great show. I watched it when I was in 8th grade though and it was probably like my 10th anime watched so at the time of scoring it was the best I had seen. If i rewatched it, it probably would not be a 10, but I have very fond memories of it, like Otanashi's backstory. In reality it's probably about an 8.5-9 for me, but it gets that bonus of being the best I had seen at the time + nostalgia.

I would say enough to recognize the anime archetype on the spot. The moment you see it, you can identify the kind that is going on. Like most people said, that happens at around 100 anime watched.

When you start to recognize the patterns in archetypes through the shows you watch and actively discuss your appreciation of said shows, be it IRL or on forums. Usually at such a point you can identify what you like and dislike, and separate good quality from the bad (in your opinion). If you know enough to build your own opinion on the different facets of the medium, you're alright in my book.

But you do know that Video Girl Ai is in the Ecchi genre right? Try watching Chu Bra sometime. You might like it despite all the panty shots. Just going to point this out, you might want to consider either updating your list to include Video Girl Ai, or admit you didn't watch it.

But I honestly got news for you about Eiken. Most people don't like Eiken. It is in the bottom 100 anime. It is only in the 2000's in popularity. So it isn't that popular.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/788/Eiken__Eikenbu_yori_Ai_wo_Komete?q=eiken

Wow look how low that score is.

If someone did happen to like Eiken, I would actually think they were pretty cool. Why? Because they could admit it. I haven't seen it yet. I know it by legend. It doesn't interest me. Why watch it. And Ecchi Lord Mamster doesn't have it on his completed list, so why mention it.

Do you know what he is watching right now? Bang Dream. It is a pretty innocent moe Band anime with NO panty shots what so ever. It is actually a pretty emotional show. I am watching it too. And yeah I love band anime. So what. K-On was probably one of the worst ones I saw because lacking band. But even still just hard to give fair scores always

He is also starting on Tsuki ga Kirei which is a pretty cute romance from what I saw on episode 1. Pretty innocent middle school romance. Sure the summary does say there will be a romance polygon. Kinda interested in how that goes.

I happen to like Kimera.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2592/Kimera?q=Kimera

This anime is rated with a lower 5 but I still like it. I don't think it is bad as a lower 5 for sure. Especially with all the other stuff yaoi puts out. It is a lot like watching B movie sci fi or horror. Some people like those. I am one of them. I love the movie Barbarella as far as live action movies go.

Despite me and Ecchi Lord Mamster having a 0% affinity in terms of the stuff we watch. He is a good friend. He really helped me to feel more confident on this website and to just be myself. Maybe someday you will stop feeling the need to pick on other people because you have a small list.

There is nothing wrong with finding something you like and gaining specialist knowledge. Few people have that. In real life or even on this website. I know someone with extensive Moe knowledge. He is actually pretty cool. And I am someone people like to go to about animated yaoi and shonen ai titles. I have seen a lot of them. Someday I will watch every last one.

To complete an entire genre is actually a big accomplishment even if there are only 40ish and 60ish titles respectively. Because you had to watch every one... and you had to watch all the shitty titles too.

But there is total merit and just watching what you like. You watch what you like right?

I don't just watch shit though... I watch classic titles, I watch pulp titles. I watch dramatic titles. This is true variety. Not "only titles that make me think". That isn't variety. That is elitism. But if you want to only skim the top and obscurely good, go for it. Oniisama e should be on your watch list though. Popularity in the 2000's and under the top 500 ratings.

I got lots of those.

But I watch bad stuff because I think it is fun. Not because I don't like it.
