Ok, I've just finished watching Madoka Magica for the first time ever and I have to say this totally blows every other magical girl anime I've seen out of the water. I love this even better than Sailor Moon, which is saying something b/c this was the first anime I ever watched. The animation, the storyline, the characters, and the soundtrack were all dark, yet beautiful! So I was wondering, does anybody else feel the same way as me?

I fully agree. I LOVED Madoka Magica. But then again, Madoka Magica can't really be compared to other magical girl shows since it's a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, which makes it more complex that normal magical girl anime.

I hear Princess Tutu is pretty good. And Nanoha has beam spam and befriending. And...Um...Someone help me out here.

Still though, I wouldn't really compare Madoka to Sailor Moon. They're really trying to accomplish different things. Yeah, I liked Madoka better too, but I dunno, doesn't seem right.

Madoka isn't a magical girl anime, it is a deconstruction of the magical girl genre. Also, I am fucking sick of people saying Madoka is dark. Watch No Longer Human or Hellsing Ultimate, then tell me Madoka is dark.

Well, the question is - Can Madoka Magica really be considered a Magical Girl series?

Sure, it has magical girls and even a pet mascot, but other than that, it has none of the typical tropes invoked by other Magical girls series. It may be technically classed as a Magical Girl series, a wolf hiding in sheeps clothing, but ask yourself - can you really think of it as such? Because I do not think of it as such.

When you think of it that way, how can it be compared to other Magical Girls series, when it is questionable whether this series is one or not? Maybe if you had my view, you couldn't compare it so easily.

So despite it having a lot of the key plot points that make it a magical girl anime, because it doesn't follow certain tropes it's not one.... Nice logic there guys. It is a magical girl anime just like evangelion is a mecha, it may not be a cliche cookie cutter example from those genres but it still is regardless.

Just because it is questionable, doesn't mean it isn't possible. And just because it isn't a typical magical girl anime, doesn't mean it can't be considered a magical girl anime. Paprika isn't a typical anime movie either, but it is still an anime movie.

Myself, I consider it to be a more realistic take on becoming a magical girl, especially when it comes to the consequences of becoming one.

I always felt like "deconstruction" was a genre on its own, and the genres that deconstructions are in are subgenres of deconstruction... if that made any sense.

You mean the anime right, not the manga? I haven't seen the anime, but the manga version felt like more like a more unique version of the magical girl genre than a deconstruction of it. By that, I mean the main female character is more daring and authentic than that of other magical girls I've seen.

Yep. The premise is the same (duels, etc.), but there's a ton of noticeable differences between the anime and manga. The movie clears up on a ton of issues that weren't resolved or explained in the manga or anime; also, car metaphors.

Don't get me wrong. I did say it may technically still be a Magical Girl series, so I'm not denying that or anything.
The point was that it doesn't feel like one to me, having only 2 things in common with other Magical Girl series - The powers, and the pet mascot.

Time travel is a common trope. Using time travel is not borrowing stuff from other stories.

The ending has nothing to do at all with Eva besides Madoka and Rei appearing in front of people. What it is about is completely different.

ok then let's put the copying part aside
what exactly was so great about this show?:)
after ep 4 or 5 when you know happens you kinda get the idea about what kinda show to expect, the length is too short to care about any of the characters, the witches...I don't even, the time travel twist you've seen a 1000x times
and the 2.0 end of eva ending
so what's so thought provoking about this show?
