Since I spent some time in Japan I can tell you my impressions: Racism isn't as frowned upon, but it's not horrible, mostly people will assume you can't do shit, you know, since gaijin don't speak Japanese. Life isn't an anime, and while more people watch it there than they do here, it's not a universal interest.
