Do you have pride in things out of your choice?

So, I was looking at Stormfront (don't worry, I'm not a white supremacist). Then it got me thinking about pride in race, sexuality, nationality, etc.

Personally, I don't see much use in them. I keep my pride reserved for the non-existent achievements I've put effort to; my art and graphic designs, my abilities in sports, instruments I play, etc. To me, my sexuality and so on is about as worthy of pride as my handedness or hair colour. Obviously seeing as how many people are proud of these things though (no, not handedness and hair colour... I hope), a lot of people would disagree.

So, polling time.

I'm only proud of my achievements. I don't see the logic behind being proud of things such as nationality, sexuality, race or anything you didn't do much to acquire.

It really depends on it.
As Heika mentioned nationality sexuality and race are things your born with there things you don't need to have pride or shame in it's just the way you are.
Besides think of it this way if you where born in the US and you are proud of it then you would also have been proud if you where borne in French.
National pride is different per country and that pride can also be for different achievements such as a thriving history or a powerful nation.

Taking pride in something that took you a hard time to achieve is normal if would be strange if you didn't take pride in it and would immediately raise the question of why did i work so hard to achieve it.
You can be modest about it but you should also take pride in it.

We all have been in situation where people are rude to you try to frame you and generally try to make you angry.
In those situation you can get angry and do what they want but you can also keep pride to yourself and stay calm and composed.
You generally achieve more by being calm and composed and you leave a better impression also remember to stay polite.
And you don't lower yourself to there level.

I always have pride. Whether I'm looking down on them or not, whether I'm superior or inferior, arrogant or humble [and so on] I will always have pride [like a lot of people]. I rarely show my pride.

It just depends whether you show your pride or not. Show it the wrong way or the right way is entirely up to you. [No matter what, even a "pride-less" person can have a little pride]

Aren't they one and the same thing? Everything about is what makes you who you are.

I agree with it's pointless to have pride in race or nationality and things like that however.

To me they aren't, but it all depends on how you look at things. I like that I'm mixed-race and a twin sister, but I wouldn't say I'm 'proud' of these qualities. Things that I do define me more as a person than things which I was born as. I feel pride in finishing my dissertation, I feel pride that I've been playing guitar since I was 10, I feel pride that I'm good at badminton. These are things I acquired, so I don't see them as being a natural part of who I am. That's just the way I see it.

I feel happy, but rarely proud if I achieve something, because it usually doesn't mean that much to me after 5 minutes.

I generally only feel proud over the things I have put all of my being into accomplishing.

Even things I've acquired aren't necessarily things I'd feel proud of since a lot of the things I've acquired in life have always come with such ease and minimal effort. Such as learning new languages, picking up art techniques, philosophy, singing, and more recently parkour.

Now on the other hand, doing any of those things for a purpose that extends beyond myself can give a sense of 'accomplishment', a greater satisfaction.

You can't really do much with the fact that you were born with a set of chromosomes, skin color, ethnicity or nationality.

That reminds me of this:

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

I do think our actions define who we are, but of course there is more to us than that. As for me, I don't really think about this... but if anything, I'm proud of what I have accomplished (I don't quite understand how people can be proud of their goals... :S).

I don't know, whilst I don't generally feel it, sometimes I feel something along the lines of pride for being British/English. I didn't exactly earn my place here or anything, but my being is very much shaped by how I was raised in England, I'd be a different person if I was raised in Texas. I feel some sort of pride in myself for who I am and what I have done, so it somewhat translates into a bit of National pride too.

As for my achievements, I don't tend to feel too much pride, I just tend to be happy if I do well.

I think this is the thing I feel most pride in, because I can point to this one single entity which is the representation of, and culmination of, 3 years studying at university.

There are other things I'm proud of, of course, to varying degrees.

I didn't feel that much pride about my undergrad dissertation. My masters one however... I feel real pride in it.

Well, I have reasons other than the tautological one (i.e. I'm proud because it's a dissertation) which makes me feel pride in it; I hope to do a Masters within 1-2 years, and I hope I have similar pride and reasons for feeling said pride.

What did you write on, if you don't mind sharing?

I would guess that most people, if not everyone, feel some pride for things they did not personally accomplish. It's just that it's much more likely that your feelings of pride will be brought into question if you're on the negative end of some stereotype, or something like that. Ie. no one ever has the need to express white pride, or straight pride, because no one ever questioned these things. Usually people are proud to be different, not proud to be the same (overgeneralization, I know).

Personally, yes, I'm proud of my ethnicity, accomplishments of my family, and other things I didn't directly impact. Not proud in the sense that I go around declaring these things, or brag about them, just a subtle pride that makes me feel good when I tell someone about them.

on another note, i am not patriotic, but i think you can be proud of things that you specifically didn't influence, you can be proud that you share something in common with those who did.

No - do we have pride in things we don't do. e.g. the place we are born, our skin colour etc.

Don't worry. From looking at some of the responses it's clear you aren't the first one who didn't understand.

Why should I have pride in anything but myself? My country doesn't protect my interests, most of my countrymen are sterilized sheep apathetic to everything and only know how to have sex and drink wine.
And you all say the same thing, no use for pride, no use for tradition, no use for patriotism, you're all uninteresting and boring and the reason western civilization is falling apart.

Why? Let's not speak of race but let's speak of nationality, what's so bad about being proud of belonging to a group which accomplished something of worth, wouldn't individuals get inspired to follow up on those achievements?

Exactly. People tend to fall back on other people's merits and say "we" did it. If England won the world cup, everyone would say "we did it" if the team fuck up they'd say "they fucked up".

I love how us Brits always go on about how "we" used to rule sea as if they had anything to do with it.

Don't worry, it's the same everywhere.

On topic, yea, can have pride for something I did not achieve. Like if a friend do great things. Same for ancestor or nation if it achieved things belonging your idea of moral. And I can also feel shame for the same reason. (i.e. being embarrassed by your football/soccer supporter)

Whatever I do, I'm necessary associated/linked with nationality/friend/family/whatever.

Not really any reasoning in that though.

Minorities have "pride" for their skin color, sexual orientation, heritage, etc because their entire lives they have been told that they should be ashamed for being such things, and their "pride" is giving that notion the middle finger.

It's not about having a sense of personal accomplishment for being black, gay, whatever. It's about having a sense of dignity in the fact that what you are is not "wrong" or "less than" anything else.

I don't have pride in my skin or sexual orientation or whatever, but I feel a certain amount of it for my country. Not so much the actual country itself, but for the culture which has shaped me to make me who I am.

I am quite fond of self-deprecation and cutting sarcasm as cultural traits, maybe that's not pride per se, but I can't help something...

Maybe I just confuse pride for fondness.
