After a few weeks, ep 5 finally dropped... Apparently Kyouji went to prison for beating someone up, and I thought that was a fleshback lol... anyway, it doesn't feel like the last ep, so I guess we will see

The finale episode, and an anime-original epilogue at that.

Kyouji gets jail time after the harrowing incident, though it's been awhile since his yakuza gang has seen him having quite a change in appearance. However, it's the group's annual karaoke concert that got postponed because their boss got sick, though he pays a visit to the group, which Kyouji tries to suck up to the boss to pursue the event as planned. Too bad, suck it up boys. The "concert", however, just gets hilariously worse with the "unique" taste that everyone chose...except Kyouji, of course. And...he's the ABSOLUTE worst of them all to be ranked the sucky-song king.

Kyouji's punishment to be tattooed poop all over his body from his boss, it's karma from Satomi, if there's anything worth remembering him by for his boss to have a change of heart tattooing his teacher's name instead on his arm. And for the yakuza's right-hand man who thinks that his life isn't derailed enough, meeting Satomi, changed his life for the better.

What a short, but great show.

Favourite episode for sure! And it's an anime-original episode as well...!
I loved the double meaning of Kyōji's monologue.
Fundamentally, he is a person struggling to find a place where he feels like he can belong, and that's exactly what the double meaning implies.
He knew he wouldn't be satisfied with a quite life.
He experienced what was considered normal for someone like him, but he still wasn't satisfied, which led him to joining a yakuza.
He knew he wouldn't be satisfied with a life in the yakuza.
He experienced what was considered normal for someone like him, but he still wasn't satisfied, which led him to... something new.
It's still only the beginning of his second change of lifestyle, but, wherever it leads him, he will forever remember that it was thanks to Satomi.
Much like the first time was thanks to the Boss.
And it seems like the Boss has realised Kyōji's situation, knowing him for so long.
It's like he intentionally sent him to Tokyo, to give him a chance to figure out who he wants to be.
I wouldn't even be surprised if he knew that Satomi was taking that flight and found the perfect opportunity to push him in the right direction.
My opinion on the Boss has just changes completely.

In other news... Loved the karaoke contest in this episode!
Whoever the guy that tried to sing Usseewa was, something tells me he loves the Live version...
I think either him or Shaved Head should have been King (but I will admit, Kyōji wasn't far behind...)
Finally, I think the Boss has improved significantly in the last 3 years; at the Kanji look clean.

10/10 episode
7.59/10 anime

Edit: It's also possible the Boss faked a cold to make Kyōji's release line up with the contest. (I could find a good place to add this comment...)
Edit2: I know the manga is over, but I would love an anime-original second season!
Edit3: Correction to Edit2: There is a sequel manga, Famiresu Iko., that is still publishing. It only has 17 chapters so far though, so I don't expect a sequel soon. I'd still love it if they made one eventually! (Just don't rush it, wait for as much material as you need.)

Really nice finale
It was great seeing why Kyouji wasn't able to meet with Satomi for the last three years. This was a really fun show I would love to see it get more content.

I love that they gave us context for Kyouji's 3 year disappearance. I wanted Kyouji to say the boss he hated Satomi because he liked him but oh well, I think the boss knew he likes Satomi. Also, he gave him the chance to tattoo something he likes, not just random stuff like for the others.

Also, I hugged myself when he saw Satomi and this beautiful angelic song started, omg. He saw an angel, that's for sure!! 🥹🥹

I'm sad this anime finished, but I'll keep reading Famiresu. I love these 2 way too much 😭😭.

@DishaSamSimp Yes, but please keep in mind that it's a very different story so don't expect a Karaoke Iko 2.0 or you'll be disappointed. It isn't a whacky comedy anymore, the sequel has a more realistic and mature tone, it's a mix of the deadpan comedy that the author has come to master so well in recent years and drama. It's very funny but at the same time very heartbreaking, very heavy. Also, it follows some characters other than Satomi and Kyouji, although our guys are still the main characters. But it's very good.

There's a trend among yakuza after prison release, no matter how long they're in there, they've to act like "everything has changed" or "I can't catch up with current trend" or even "this is not my world anymore", it's funny to see Kyouji acts like 30 years have passed when it's just 3 years.

Now regarding our couple, they should go all the way even before Kyouji was arrested.

The premise is utterly daft, but I don't think at any point I would have described Karaoke Iko as a 'whacky comedy', so I'm a little intimidated by the sequel based on your description, lol.

Great adaptation; the characters personalities and feelings felt just right; A bit too bl than the manga IMO, but i'm not complaining.
I hope it is popular in japan and that they'll adapt the other works by the same mangaka: "famiresu" and also "onna no sono no hoshi".

I've got conflicting feelings about this episode and it's leaning towards not favorable. This episode filled in some gaps of knowledge that the manga and follow-up sequel hadn't given us before (at least to my recollection), primarily changing what I had assumed about three things: what Kyouji was doing during Satomi's remaining high school years, how he got the tattoo, and why he was at the airport that same day as Satomi.

Does anyone know if Wayama Yama wrote this episode? Or is this all anime original content?

EDIT: I did catch this in the anime background: "Episode 5 is an anime original addition that aired five weeks after episodes 1-4." I still wonder if Wayama Yama was involved at all, since this episode was weaker than what I usually expect from her writing. Wish I could read the Japanese for the ending credits...

Wayama-sensei did not write this episode, but according to some Japanese magazine interviews with the anime staff, it's based on/inspired by things she told them during production when they were quizzing her about the characters and background info etc and they apparently ran everything in the anime past her too, so nothing should be too far off base. The anime staff are also self-proclaimed huge fans of her work so they were very careful to protect her unique worldview.

Wayama-sensei had also mentioned in an interview ages ago that she originally planned to include Kyouji being shown going to prison in the manga, but ran out of time when she was drawing it (the doujin version) then just left it as it. So most of the fandom have long accepted Kyouji Jail Arc as canon lmao

@anacrusis The anime new content directly contradicts the manga canon, though. Famiresu Iko reveals that Kyouji has been out of jail for at least two years and not three months like in the anime.

Also, I have seen several Japanese fans mention that Wayama explained years ago at a fan event that Kyouji went to the airport because he knew Satomi would be there and he couldn't hold back anymore and wanted to see him that much. Secondary sources aren't always accurate, but this version makes more sense than the anime events. The anime original plot turns everything Kyouji said to Satomi at the airport into lies. Anime Kyouji didn't get the Satomi tattoo by tricking the boss; hell, he didn't even choose the tattoo himself. He never purposely avoided Satomi to protect his youth, as he was in jail all that time. Why would he lie, then? It makes no sense to me.

I enjoyed this episode a lot, but I don't think people should take it as canon to the manga. Like someone said on Twitter, better to think of it as a high-budget doujinshi.

Yeah I never gave my personal opinion on whether it should be considered canon or not, or if it contradicts the manga/what Wayama-Sensei has reportedly privately said to fans at signing events etc, was just answering that person's questions about how the episode reportedly came to be, as per interviews with the anime staff lmao

But for what it's worth, I don't think the outline of events was *that* incongruent (the tattoo choice aside) with what Kyouji ended up saying. (Though I agree they definitely could have made it more in line with his explanation...) I do kinda like the theory that Kyouji himself didn't even realise his true feelings until he actually saw Satomi again in person and then bam, the floodgates opened.

You'll probably have to wait until they release the soundtrack next week (30th September) as it's an original choral arrangement recorded and sung for the anime I believe.

I was expecting some more of our boys together, but yeah, Famiresu Iko! exists so I guess they had to fill the gaps in Karaoke Iko! instead. Prison arc is a great excuse for Kyouji being away and I actually liked it. Expected a liiiittle more of the tattoo situation, but that's fine. Just got a little sad that the final scene was the same as the last episode. At least we saw Kyoji seeing Satomi and that angelic music playing.

Didn't LOVE this episode or anything, but it was okay and I did love the others, so I'll keep my score as 9/10. Hahh, can we get more after Famiresu Iko? I already read it and I want more *sobs*. Guess I'll watch the Muchuu sa, kimi ni, which I skipped in favour of this last episode.

Useewa was absolutely awful and made me smile. And Kurenai is forever on my playlist from now on

Ok I checked the credits and it's listed as 混声合唱をピアノのための「ガラスの小箱」 if you wanna look it up! Not sure how helpful that'll be though since the first part of it appears to just be a description since it literally means "mixed chorus for piano", but the part in brackets (which I assume is the actual name of the specific song/movement/verse?? idk anything about Japanese choral arrangements lmao) assumedly has original lyrics/music written for the anime since it's credited to the composer and I couldn't find anything else that matched it exactly, except for in the context of the anime lmao

@PinkRandoseru I realize I didn't expand on my initial reservations in my original post, but it feels unnecessary since you echo a lot of why I was unenthused about this episode. It feels like whoever was responsible for the writing had questions they felt were important to address, but the answers were not satisfactory and/or contradicted what other information had been given as you mentioned. They certainly tried and that comes across, but it didn't click the way it should've and has soured with me the more I sit with it. Also, it made Kyouji more passive and made some events very serendipitous. I can give some things a pass (the jailtime), but other details have me hoping that they won't be canon to the manga series. I've gotten the impression that Wayama Yama has a different direction in mind.

@PinkRandoseru Could you remind me which chapter mentions that Kyouji has been out of jail for at least two years? I don’t recall it at all.

In my opinion, him lying does make sense, he wants to be seen as cool, eccentric, and charismatic in front of Satomi. If he told him that he had just gotten out of jail, I don’t think Satomi would feel comfortable. He’d probably be even more weirded out if the first thing Kyouji did after leaving jail was meet up with him, especially after Kyouji appeared spontaneously. I think Episode 5 represented well the version of Kyouji we see in Famiresu iko, a depressed, kind of "lame" uncle (in an endearing way lol).
Have a nice day!

What a good surprise! I love this little anime and the songs choice was super cool (when I hear God Knows... of Haruhi Suzumiya I was so surprised and so happy) I expect that Kyuji and Satomi never get separated again!

Way better anime than whatever the other one was. 2/10 for me for some episodes being a bit boring to me.

The real generational divide in this anime is between the people going 'what have they done to usseewa' and those of us going 'omg haruhi'

Thank you so much for this beautiful finale. Worth the wait! ❤️
I'm actually hoping for another season but, oh well.

I kind of like that we've got Kyouji's part of the three years timeskip cause, honestly, I had no idea what they'd do without using the material from Famiresu Iko. I feel like it kind of shows him and his relationship with Satomi in a different light? The way he lied to sound more suave lol

Kind of a strange way to end a series as a standalone but if it's more for the existing fans... I'm eating that up. Hope Famiresu Iko gets animated someday. Or Hoshi-sensei.
