You have tile like School Rumble(surpringly not as many members on MAl as you would think) or Prison school which people who are into anime have at least heard of at some point. And of course Kaguya-sama which has been a big hit in recent years, even tho you could argue that people are hooked because of the romantic storyline, especially the deeper you're into the series. Anyway, what about less popular series of the sub genre? Here some I really enjoyed a great deal Gokujou Seitokai https://myanimelist.net/anime/456/Gokujou_Seitokai?q=Best%20student%20coun&cat=anime Joshikousei no Mudazukai https://myanimelist.net/anime/38619/Joshikousei_no_Mudazukai?q=Joshikusei%20mu%20&cat=anime Muranase! Seton Gakuen https://myanimelist.net/anime/40483/Murenase_Seton_Gakuen?q=Muranase%20seton%20&cat=anime The Ping Pong Club https://myanimelist.net/anime/914/Ike_Ina-chuu_Takkyuu-bu?q=Ping%20pong%20club&cat=anime Cromartie High deserves a mention, too. It has some sort of popularity, but majority have probably never heard of it. https://myanimelist.net/anime/114/Sakigake_Cromartie_Koukou?q=Cromartie%20&cat=anime |

Maria†Holic, a 2009 comedy by the director of the Monogatari series, about this poor lesbian who enters a wealthy all-girls school in order to score, but the first "girl" she encounters ends up being a sadistic crossdressing boy. It was a clever parody of yuri series from the 2000s, particularly Maria-sama ga Miteru. |

I see Asobi Asobase mentioned far more often than Joshikousei no Mudazukai (aod Google finds 10,200 hits on MAL for AA, against 2,600 for JnM), which shows how human taste has strayed from the right path. I won't be surprised if we are all struck by lightning one of these days. A possible explanation is that the name "Asobi Asobase" is easier to remember and so more fitted for the average intellectual capacity in the community. Anyway I wanted to mention Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, which must have been overshadowed by the true Nichijou. I remember once recommending Nichijou to a guy, he checked it out and came back saying that it was fun but not the masterpiece I had led him to believe, and only a month later we discovered that he had watched Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou instead. Nevertheless Danshi Koukyousei is a long laugh from beginning to end. |

But I figured there was room to reflect on why some of these shows fade from discussion so quickly, not just list them like flashcards. lol But for the sake of argument, here is a title I will shamelessly plug anyways... "Peach Girl" is honestly one of those rare high school comedies that isn’t afraid to go for the throat. It’s over-the-top, dramatic, and hilarious, but beneath all the melodrama is a sharp commentary on high school social dynamics, toxic friendships, and how appearances can absolutely mess with how they're perceived. Which even that is comical in itself or maybe it's simply because I Just have a twisted sense of humor. lol Seriously toned cringe scenes of Pretty Boy high school brats having petty fights with each other, violently punching each other in the face for what.... a dude was just only casually rude to someone so naturally that leads to physically assaulting them? lol Momo's situation, being judged for her looks while constantly misunderstood is peak fictional comedy to me as well. lol What makes "Peach Girl" so good is that it plays like a soap opera on energy drinks. You’re yelling at the screen, laughing at the absurdity, and then suddenly hit with a gut-punch emotional moment. Sae is one of the most iconic antagonists in such a Shoujo romcom, not because she’s evil, but because she’s so real in how petty and manipulative she is. She’s basically the blueprint for the “chaotic frenemy” before that actually became some fucking trend. lol But I think the reason "Peach Girl" isn’t talked about much anymore is because it's a product of its time. Much like anything else one can conjure up and claim it's obscurity. The art style screams early 2000s, and newer anime fans might find the drama “too much” compared to the more subdued or polished high school romance comedy shit that is popular these days. Plus, it's not exactly easy to find on streaming platforms anymore, and it hasn’t had the kind of revival or re-release that would keep this kind of shit constantly in some spotlight. Still, for anyone who loves messy, unfiltered petty teen drama with actual character development and surprisingly sharp humor, "Peach Girl" deserves way more credit than it gets. lol |

Kill Me Baby is pretty good, it feels more aligned with CGDCT than fullout gag anime but I found it pretty damn funny. Mitsudomoe is also a good one, it had me laughing for basically the entire runtime of an episode. There's also a couple of those 3 minute per episode short series that come to mind. Plastic Neesan might be the most popular one among them but Ai-Mai-Mii and Teekyuu are pretty funny. Partially gonna agree with the people who mentioned Paniponi Dash, SZS, and Mariaholic. Loved all those shows though I never found them overwhelmingly funny, I just found them to be good shows that got a chuckle out of me every once in a while. |

@ColourWheel Probably your sense of humor if you see Peach Girl as a comedy, but definitely fair enough if you say it like that (my brother who only watched anime on TV as a child also laughed at how overdramatic AoT is) It's been a while since I've seen it. Comedy-wise I don't remember much, regardless of it was unintentional or not. Only that I genuinely liked the drama. Anime being overdramatic or melodrama in general is what I like about it in the first place. And yes, occasionaly that's comedic as well. Which can be a good thing, too. |

Anime being overdramatic or melodrama in general is what I like about it in the first place. And yes, occasionaly that's comedic as well. Which can be a good thing, too. If you want me to shamelessly name-drop another title more conventional to being an actual comedy, there’s "Magikano". It’s basically what you’d get if fanservice was raised by cartoon gremlins and handed a script with no rules. A raunchy middle school perverted comedy for the whole family. lol "Magikano" is one of those shows that feels like it made a dramatic escape from a voluntary mental institution, even when one could’ve just freely walked out of the place with no problem, and landed in a school uniform. It’s chaotic, unhinged, and lives off pure early-2000s anime energy aimed at a general Japanese male demo. Like someone mashed a trashy magical girl harem and a slapstick pervy ghost comedy together, then triple-dosed it with extra-refined sugar and said, “Yup, that’s the tone". lol It shouldn’t work. By all logic, it should be a mess. But somehow, that mess is hilarious. It doesn’t just lean into the absurd, it swan-dives off the roof of the school, shamelessly flaunting its white panties, and yells “Plot? What plot?!” on the way down. Even at times, it pokes fun at actual anime fanservice, while ironically offering it at the same time, in a way that isn’t inherently meant to sexually gratify the viewer at all in the first place. Nobody ever brings this show up, and that honestly blows my mind. It’s comedy gold! It’s got that “your weeb friend randomly recommended it and you were just expecting it to be complete trash, but now you’re 4 episodes deep and actually loving the chaos” energy. You want underrated? This is it. If your taste runs a little off-kilter and you like your school comedies cracked out, unpredictable, and aggressively anti-serious... Then metaphorically, "Magikano" is your dream girlfriend material tease that you had a huge crush on back in 1991. All dressed up in a trendy T-shirt they bought at the GAP, and wearing a very short and tight stone-washed jean miniskirt, white socks, and the silkiest white panties they probably own, all for your movie date. Knowing full well they’re expecting to get totally felt up that evening, sitting in the very back row of the almost-empty theater with you. "Magikano" can come off just that unhinged. lol |

It’s chaotic, unhinged, and lives off pure early-2000s anime energy aimed at a general Japanese male demo. Like someone mashed a trashy magical girl harem and a slapstick pervy ghost comedy together, then triple-dosed it with extra-refined sugar and said, “Yup, that’s the tone". lol
It shouldn’t work.
"Magikano" can come off just that unhinged. lol

Probably your sense of humor if you see Peach Girl as a comedy, but definitely fair enough if you say it like that (my brother who only watched anime on TV as a child also laughed at how overdramatic AoT is) It's been a while since I've seen it. Comedy-wise I don't remember much, regardless of it was unintentional or not. Only that I genuinely liked the drama. Anime being overdramatic or melodrama in general is what I like about it in the first place. And yes, occasionaly that's comedic as well. Which can be a good thing, too.

But I wanted to capture the kind of nostalgic lust I felt consuming "Magikano" for the first time. Like an adolescent movie date I had with a girlfriend back in the early 90s. The vivid details might have been a little much in hindsight, but honestly, I don’t really care… lol. At least I found something that piqued your interest, and maybe my long-winded description sealed the deal. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts if you actually check it out! |

@ColourWheel I only skimmed through it, since 2000s energy already had me. It doesn't seem quite as comedy focussed as Ramen Fighter Miki from the same year, but I'll see. |

@alshu S2 of School Rumble was where I started really loving it, because the cast grew on me. Which means I would probably enjoy S1 more on a rewatch as well. |
